    Kitfox wants that much for the Grove gear or for the wing parts - If I wasn't so deep in my project, I would come and get it - maybe if I was younger?
    If I had room to store it, I would get it anyway.

    Cams and lifters are most often damaged by rust - check it close and prelube with some STP.

    Well the mystery product was vinyl flooring remover and it did not work. Just didn't want anyone buying it before I found out if it would work. I tried WD-40 also, which was of no value. Chis has the best answer, that's what I did with the windscreen after fighting with the doors.

    If you buy the stainless cables, you don't have to worry about rusting or lubing them annually. You can prestretch them, and you should have adjustments on them.
    I like the looks of that Wicks covered wire housing. What size wire and housing do you use for your trim? I was thinking .078 wire in 3/32 hole in 7/32 housing.

    BTW - I bought a big roll of sillymeter Chinese cable at Harbor Freight for $10 - it is a few thousands under 1/8", but have about talked myself out of using it. Not SS.

    Lycoming cylinders
    I bought this Lycoming IO-360 earlier this year from a guy in Canada. It only had 137 hours Since Overhauled, but had been sitting for a few years. The logbook showed that it had been pickled, and at the time of pickling the mechanic had noticed slight corrosion in the cylinders.
    So, I was really rolling the dice, and I have lost some sleep over what the cylinders would actually look like! However, I took it apart yesterday and it looks great! The corrosion was really difficult to find! It basically consists of just a few small pinholes on one side of each cylinder. The Pistons have a little corrosion on the top of them, but I havent cleaned them off completely yet to see the amount of corrosion.
    I'm going to have the cylinders honed and then put new rings on the Pistons. I have ordered all of the seals and gaskets and I'm hoping that will get her ready to go. I sure am glad this tipped in my favor, it could have been costly!

    These engines really are simple...Damn the lawyers for making these things so expensive!

    Here is a better look at the stripes, I really like it now. I wasn't sure about it at first! I also pinstriped the black stripes with a metallic charcoal 1/4" stripe. The pin striping really softened the edges of the black stripe.

    It's a bitch to get that crap off.
     
    I'd proto any windows with the old paper covered crap and not worry about scratching it, then go buy brand new plastic covered lexan or plexi and make exact clean copies of the protos you scratched up while figuring everything out.

    Hi all this is a Kitfox Model 4 that the original owner damaged the wings on landing.  He bought a new wing and has them built to the point of almost ready for covering.  New covering material is included.  The original owner passed away 3 years ago and the plane was giving to his best friend.  It has been sitting in his garage for the last 3 years and I purchased the project off the friend.  It needs flaperons, engine mount, cowling, and one wing tip.  These are the known items.  There is a main tubing in the fuselage where the rear spar attaches that is slightly bent.  I'm thinking this tube could be heated and bent to proper location; I've attached a picture showing this bent tube.  New 4130 chromally tubing is included to replace the tube if you so choose. The bent tube is on the pilot side of the aircraft.  Overall the plane is in good shape and will make somebody a great quick project.  One huge plus is this Kitfox 4 already has the Grove Landing gear and brakes.  A new firewall has been installed and a brand new windscreen is included.  The interior is in great shape and as many all ready know this has the more desired flaperon mixer alreay installed.  Please feel free to email me for any questions you have.  turbofanelectrics@yahoo.com

    Bowden cable??
    I didn't want to hijack the other Bowden cable thread, so I moved mine over here. I'm replacing the trim cable on my Avid rebuild, as the original is 25 years old, and I can get at it easy now with everything uncovered. I was thinking that a Teflon coated cable might work better and be less inclinded to rust up. Looked at Aircraft Spruce and their regular Bowden cable is $2.35 a foot with the inner cable included. It's just spiral wound galvanized wire with an inner wire. Wicks doesn't have that type of Bowden cable, but they do have the coated cable housing I was thinking about using. You have to buy the inner wire separate, but with that figured in, It's still about half the price of what Spruce wants. This question isn't about spending less money, but rather about getting the better product. Any opinions about which cable type to use? I've bought some cheap choke cables and in a year sitting outside they were rusted up and junk. Chinese junk ofcourse and I'm sure Spruce's stuff is not like that, but that's part of what is driving my thought process. I'm attaching a picture of Wicks cable housing. Thanks, Jim Chuk

    PS I'm changing the rudder cables also. Spruce has un streached and prestreached cable. Wicks has only the unstreached judging by their price. Any thoughts on which is normally used? I looked on line and found that prestreached is subjected to a load of 60% of it's breaking strength.

    One liquid on the chemical resistance chart I linked that Might be interesting to try is Decalin. Maybe you have some laying around if you or someone you know uses Avgas in a Rotax. Actually, I would be very interested seeing if Naptha works too. When I was trying to remove all of the years of old, dried packing tape residue on my Avid+ kit (old Airdale taped parts to the fuselage for shipping transport), it was by far the most effective. If you have some Coleman stove fuel (what I used), that is basically Naptha with a rust inhibitor added.

    I agree - rib stitching started with old narrow wood and aluminum ribs - Probably when they only had fabric on the top of the wings.As far as I know, there has been no reports of any fabric separation with proper gluing of these wide capstrips on our slow flyers.
    Some folks seem to think the plane is worth more with the stitching - I don't.

    I have a product that may do the job (available at any hardware or big box lumber store) but I want to try it first.  Making that happen this morning.  Spent hours pealing the paper from the polycarbonate in the kit also.

    Spruce has the Bowden cable - probably Wicks, Wag, and others. I thought about a rubber or plastic tube or clamp to keep the housing ends lined up - a clamp near each end should keep them from spreading apart - of course, there are many clamps all thru the length of the housing to keep it from moving.
    I didn't know if anyone makes a connector just for the housings.

    There are two sizes of cable / wire - I think the heavier wire is .078, but haven't looked for a while, and only on 2nd cup of coffee. Going back to bed - only slept 4 hours.

    Hi Ed, I imagine a piece of tube that the cables fits snug into would line them up so they would work as one cable. the question then it how do you keep them from sliding out of the tube? First thought is a hole drilled near each end of the tube, a small nut welded over the hole, and then a screw is tightened into the nut which would put pressure on the cable to keep it from moving. That's a "first" thought though, and I haven't finished my first cup of coffee yet this morning... It's funny that you bring up the Bowden cable topic. Just last night I was looking on the web to see where I could buy a new Bowden cable for my Avid rebuild. Couldn't find any. Who has it? My trim cable is about 15' long. Jim Chuk

    Just remember right from the start that these planes were originally designed to not be stitched thus the wide capstrips so don't worry to much about it being perfect. that said I did as Ed suggested and went with the layout for AC 43.13- the poly fiber manual is well worth buying regardless of what process you are using. Make a template of the rib and mark your stitch spacing out on it first then just transfer them with a square to the other side. keep your stitches straight so it doesn't pull the fabric. Its a lot easier than most make it out to be until they have done it. good luck

    We kept ours very minimal, 582 pull start, no interior, dual wing tanks, HH rib spacing/spars, very basic and came in at 526lbs. My goal was to keep it under 550 so I'm happy with it. performs nicely

    There is a micro-polish kit you can buy to take scratches out of Plexiglas, but is probably cheaper and easier to just replace the thin stuff we use.
    For those overpriced factory "certified" parts, the kit may be cheaper.
