Quite a bit smaller and simpler Doug. The KC-10 is a direct descendent of the commercial DC-10 and it's operated very similar. The C-5 had too much military involvement in it's development and as a result it was far more difficult to operate than it needs to be. I am super stoked about being back in the Air Refueling world. Hauling stuff from A to B is important but there's something about being right on the edge of the fight refueling fighters who are dropping ordinance on the bad guy that is more exciting for me.

  4. C5Engineer added a post in a topic Gear swap... Number 3...Bush Gear part deux

This project got put on the back burner but I recently have gotten back to it and I've gotten a few inquiries on the TK1 Gear so I thought I would do an update. Here are couple pictures of the cabane that will replace the die springs that Kitfox/Avid/Highwing sell with their "Bush Gear". It's spendy...I'll leave it at that. These are a 4" stroke and weight approx 5 lbs more than the metal springs. Contact Tony at TK1Racing.com for more details.

Nickel finished...unlimited valving options on the shocks depending on your weight

The reason I am doing this is I ran the Avid gear once before and well...lets just say it's not on my plane now. The metal springs are just not enough travel if you plan to really do any bush work unless your running 31" tires. I included this pic so you get an idea on just how much bigger this gear is over the over the stock bungee gear. The tires are the 21" Nancos on Kitfox 8" Douglas wheels.

First flight as a KC-10 Crewmember
Hey guys! As many of you know I am an active duty Air Force Enlisted Aviator. From 99-05 I was a KC-135 Boom Operator. In 2005 the Airforce decided I needed to be a Flight Engineer and I ended up on C-5's. There's a pretty big difference between the Air Refueling and Airlift mission. I recently had the opportunity to become a KC-10 Flight Engineer. Yesterday I took my first familiarization flight as I start the next 8 months of training. I forgot how awesome it was refueling fighters over snow capped mountains so I thought I would share a few of the pics I grabbed yesterday.

The KC-10 can be a tanker or a receiver. We helped out some of our brothers for some training while waiting for the next flight of F-15's to show up.

    Waiting for his gas

They fly pretty tight off of us while waiting

Ended the day with a spectacular sunset off the Oregon Coast

I am super fortunate to be able to do this for a living.

I thought that Mt. Hood might be among the 3 volcanos - I wasn't talking about Big Rocks - We had to import our gravel for the roads  in the cotton lands - never wanted to climb much after I was 10 years old - fell out of a tree once and got the breath knocked out of me - Then fell off of a cotton trailer and got a concussion - then  I discovered Girls!  I can see the top of the mountain from the pilot's seat, and there is just another big rock.  To each his own!

Ed, I think Mt Rainier is the 3rd highest peak in the lower 48. It is Mt Whitney, Mt Elbert then Mt Rainier. I have been lucky, had the pleasure of standing on the summit of all three.

532 exhaust manifold might only have 2 bolt holes per cylinder, 582 manifold has 4, but spacing of cylinders is the same in either engine. Rotax sells the ex. Manifold, elbow, and muffler as separate items. Jim Chuk

PS there are 3 or 4 different styles of rotax mufflers for different mounting configurations

Are the 532 and 582 Kitfox Exhaust manifolds interchangeable ?  Would the manifold be included in that Barnstormers exhaust?  The ad don't say it is for Kitfox??

  14. dav8or added a post in a topic Throttle Body Injection on 2 Bangers!

I seem to remember reading somewhere that it has to do with the 2 strokes sensitivity to mixture combined with liability. I think the manual mixture adjustment on the throttle bodies with an unfamiliar user might be able to go over the max EGT of the 2 stroke engines pretty easily and pretty fast causing an engine seizure. There is a company offering an electronic fuel injection system that can be used with 2 strokes which would take the mixture problem out of the equation. http://www.ecotrons.com/products/2_stroke_small_engine_fuel_injection_kit

  15. dav8or added a post in a topic PROP DIAMETER?

I am flying a 2 stroke on a speedwing so this may not apply. I just increased my diameter on a 532 with 2.58:1 A-box from 64" to 68" last summer by changing blades. In theory my climb should have been better with slightly less pitch and more disk area pulling me. The climb remained about the same but I seemed to lose cruise/top end speed. A couple of months ago I got fed up with point setting and swapped to a 582 with B-box and still 2.58:1. At first I put a 71" Culver fixed pitch prop on while waiting for the correct bolts and drive pins for the GSC. I had more power from the engine and the climb was a little better than I saw with the 68" GSC but static was well below Rotax recommended. I think I was getting 5600-5700 on the Culver instead of 6250. I switched back to the GSC as soon as the bolts came in and with a few other minor adjustments/corrections that come with a new to me engine I am back to testing. At first I pitched the prop for 6250 static. Climb was incredible but it would run way over max RPM in level flight at a relatively slow for me 100mph indicated. I have re-pitched a couple of times now until it would run around max RPM at WOT in level flight. With that setting I now get 5800 static. I am climbing at 6100-6200 rpm which still gives me 1100-1200 fpm at 75-80 mph. Cruise at 6000 is now a little over 100mph and 6500 rpm gets me over 110 mph.

I do not expect to be going back to the recommended static RPM setting as it seems to wasting available power when it is set that way. I do watch EGT and water temp closely at all times.

Not sure if this helps at all but what I noticed is a widening range between static and max RPM as the prop diameter went up. After I have some more time on the 582 I may try the 64" blades again just to see what happens. BTW both props used are 2 blade.

All I know is that my only info from Rotary Wing writer, says 3 blade for Soob.  I have 1.84:1 belt drive.
Stratus may recommend 3-blades, as far as I have seen.   They have 2.2:1 mostly.

I think that vibration has more to do with the redrive ratio than anything.

I agree Larry, sometimes a 2-fer will outperform a 3,  But I have never seen a Soob with a 2-blade.  Just imagine the Vibes would be bad.
I am looking at weight and size for performance.

My ZR is a 121.  It has been to nome and back on the iron dog.  I take a 121 all over the place, working hard to get it to the top of a mountain is fun sometimes   The crossfire is a 136X 1.25"  I don't like running much over the 1.25" track on my sleds so I can keep them studded up.  This year, I can ride my daughters kitty cat about any place   Carbed and clutched that kitty cat will do 12 MPH on the grass with my fat ass on it

Going to a two blade prop may cut the drag as well, but they don't run as smoothly.

What size track is that on the Crossfire? I don't think my little 121" track TNT 600 would get out of the parking lot up there...
Hmmm. Crossfire. That sounds like something John Deere would have named a sled...

You got to balance that nosewheel! That was probably a balance problem or a bad shimmy dampener. I try to have the nose off as soon as throttle is pushed....Just like getting the tail up asap.EDMO

Putting the little wheel in front does not cure the problem.. How damn many cessnas have you flown that you had to get the nose wheel off the pavement ASAP and hold it off as long as possible or it would shimmy on ya.  The little wheel in front is a cop out for my feet don't work very good
