Chris has the sure cure for tailwheel problems - Put the wheel on the FRONT!
That also lets you haul your boat under the bird!

The larger tire you run the more tendency to shimmy. The only way to kill shimmy is with resistive damping. Changing castor angle will only move the shimmy around with respect to speed, surface, weight and tire pressure. May or may not be important in your case but I tried for a long time to eliminate shimmy with castor angle based upon what I read, and from actual experience, ONLY resistive damping will eliminate shimmy!

I know that does not answer the original question, but it turned out to be the biggest problem I faced with a large tire on the back!

My experience is with a 582 with a 3 :1 box.I was looking for a better cruise without too much loss on take off.
The smaller prop with more pitch gave a better cruise (8 kts) ,and as a bonus a slightly better take off performance.
Static rpm set the same but jumps 200rpm on take off
A 4stroke may behave differently but worth a try!

Alaska Flyers live in a different world - We just cant get away with some of the things you do.  The IFA would be heavier than the WD, and I am trying to cut nose weight if possible.

How many ramp checks did you go thru last year?  We had 2 with the C-90 Cub!  They may not know much about what they are looking at, but they sure want to know what us "Old Codgers" are driving without a medical.

I think Randy has well documented his likes for the IVO IFA ummm, I mean electrically ground adjustable prop.  you get take off and cruise.  I would think its well worth the saving a few more pennies for it.

tcj, the 670 summit is a great machine, but the rider forward position of the newer sleds will do wonders for your knees and back.  The first ride I had on one after switching from the ZR chassis I hated it.. then about 10 miles down the trail I noted that my knees did not hurt.  About 100 miles into the ride I figured out that my back didn't hurt, nor my shoulders.  I can't rail the corners on the crossfire like I can the ZR, but for overall riding, I absolutely love the seating position of the crossfire.  It is not as rider forward as the XP chassis, but I absolutely love it.  If your ever thinking of a newer mountain sled, see if you can find a 07-09 Arctic M8 153.  Prices on them are down a good bit from new (I refuse to pay 14,000 for a new sled) the engine is bullet proof and very linear in power, and the chassis rides stupid easy.  You can do a nasty 4 mile long side hill sitting on the seat not hanging off the running board.  It is just extremely easy to ride and it does well on the trail as well.

    PROP DIAMETER?
On certified planes and engines, you only have certain choices for a prop.   We have almost unlimited choices for our birds.   I was always told to "Use the biggest prop available."
With the Subaru EA-81, the 72" Warp Drive prop has to be set for a very small angle in order for the engine to turn static rpm.  This cuts down on cruise speed.
I am wondering about the possibility of using a shorter prop, say a 68", like the 912 uses, and set it for more angle to get better cruise.  I have mostly long runways to fly from.
WD told me that there would be almost no difference between the 72 and 70" props.
I am also considering an IVO since it is lighter.
    Any opinions ?

My old Summit 670 will still take me the places I want to go.  I would probably get in plenty of trouble with a modern snow machine.

If you check the LEAF catalog, all rotaxes from 377-582 use the same muffler. Kitfox remodeled the mufflers they supplied with their kits so they will fit the Kitfox. Supposedly that cost some performance. Some say five HP. I have a muffler from a Kitfox 3 that has 60 hrs on it but am not sure I want to part with it yet. Jim Chuk

Been a few years since we have had enough snow for me to justify buying a newer sled.  As long as the ole crossfire keeps running I will keep riding it.

Most of the the pics are from the area I ride at my cabin in the Caribou Hills.  A wild fire a few years ago really changed the scenery, but spring riding is normally good.  There is NO snow in the areas that are in these pictures right now.

Randy, Paul was just selling the F7A arms.  The upgrade from KF is an entire new mixer system that goes under the seat not behind it kind of like the new mixer system on yours.

The 532 exhaust bolts right up to the 582. The only difference I noticed was the exhaust ports on the 582 are a little higher/lower than the 532 on the engine itself. I am not sure if there is much difference in the tuning of the pipe/muffler between the two. I just swapped a 532 for a 582 in my Avid and it seems to have great power using the exhaust I had on the 532.

I relocated mine to between the copilot pedals, right against the firewall.  I didn't realize it was also a foot warmer for the copilot; what a deal!

I believe the first Kitfox 1 manual said 33 yards, and a later one said 35 yards for the complete covering - About 20 of that was for the wings with scraps left over.

Probably a good thing; it could be mighty embarrassing to fall on your face while exiting your plane because you forgot to unplug your socks.  But would make great fly-in hysteria.

Tailwheels came along before concrete was invented for airstrips and cow pastures - They can be a PIA on pavement! The original Wright Flyer was a nose-dragger, well - a nose-skidder!
