    Chris,
Yes, I am waiting for the WD blades to be available - but thought you were keeping the WD hub - so same as WD with Skullcap?

Going with Whirlwind. Will buy from Kitfox. They sell a couple spinner diameters depending on what model KF it was. Want the closest diameter to the original Avid spinner, but can't remember any more and am not home right now to look at the cowl.

    Chris,
I don't know the answer - but, if you are thinking for a spinner for the Warp Drive Hub, then SuberAvid gave the best option, IMO, and that was the skullcap spinner to allow easy access to the clamp bolts - Donno what size he used tho.

    MKIV spinner diameter
Does anyone know the diameter of the original Avid MKIV spinner? I seem to remember 9 inches but want confirmation before I order one.

    Many thanks

I agree putting weight at the wing tips is not a good idea.  Think spin recovery.  If you are thinking about putting weight at any extreme point on the airplane, ie nose, tail, or wing tips, do the math for the moment of inertia.  The formula is arm SQUARED times weight.  It is not as simple as weight and balance calculations.

It WILL go to free caster. Removing the cam keeps the lock pin engaged. You better get some serious lessons in and about taildraggers or you will be joining the ground loopers group. Avids are very twitchy on the ground. Short coupled means the tail wants to be in front.

  8. SuberAvid added a post in a topic Differences between Fat, Plus, Pursang, Airdale, and Magnum Fuses

Fat Avid and Avid Plus are just different names for the same bird, although some have been built from getting an Avid+ fusalage and using Avid MKIV wings and parts while others were complete Avid+ kits, so there may be some differences in the end product and possibly the resultant GW; this is probably "officially" about 1250 lb for most of these.  The Pursang I think was the early model of the Airdale but should be basically the same.  It is a bit different, having a bit of a belly for the lowered foot well and using aluminum spring gear.  The "official" GW for these was 1400 lb.  The Magnum is a bit more robust overall since it was designed for the Lycoming 0320 and has the 1700 lb GW as Ed says.  These are general numbers pulled off the top of my head and there are others on here who are the true keepers of all Avid specs (Doug) so if he says anything different, I defer to him.

Ohh ok, now I follow. I just went and did that so the tail wheel is now locked. But I will look at removing the cam inacase it switches to free caster. Thanks guys

Fusion, lift up the tail and put a saw horse with a little cushion under the fuselage where the tow bar hook up is. Now turn your tailwheel all the way one way and then back. It should release and then lock again in sync with the rudder. Problem is when the rudder/ tailwheel is kicked over hard as a result of over corrective rudder you have a damn good chance of letting go into free caster mode. Then you are limited to only rudder to try and steer it back. The trick is to look long (far) down the strip and get after straightening her out before you have it going sideways. Take the cam off the maule and you will always have positive steering with the tailwheel.

Fusion, the springs at the end of the control cables have nothing to do with the wheel castering.

Castering is a function built into the body of the tailwheel.  This function disconnects the rudder cables from the wheel allowing it to caster like a shopping cart wheel.

    Mark,
I've been taught that wings do not lift equally the length of the span - they are braced by the struts across the area with about 67 to 75% of total lift, depending on planform - and the outer half is free to float. Also, check out the formula for inertia, or kinetic energy - like taking a pencil by one end and moving it up and down, then adding a weight to the other end and trying the same thing.
I still say that the tanks should not be at the tips of these wings - and I wont build that way.

I'm yet to fly a tail dragger so any and all modifications to make it easier for a newbie I'm interested in.

Suberavid - thanks for the comment. I've looked at your plane a number of times I love it. I'm just doing my door outer skins and glass now and was looking at the overlapping piece you have on yours. Is that .050 aluminum or thinner?

Also with regards to the earlier comment about the castering in the rear. Can I replace the springs with two small tie rod arms instead to lock the wheel in place?

Ed, except in landing and taxiing, tip tanks actually reduce the stress on the wing spar.  They spread the load out over the whole wing instead of concentrating it all near the center.  Remember the wing lifts over the entire length, not just the center.

You should be able to attach the Magnum wings to any Avid Model - But, putting them on another model does not give you the 1700 gw - The Magnum is a totally different, heavier-built, bird.

    Vance,
It would be very simple to relocate the tip tanks to the next bay near the root tanks, but would require moving a drag brace.
My tanks have separate fuel lines, each going to a separate shut-off valve inside the cabin, and T'd together after that to the header tank - but you could always use the more expensive multi-tank shut-off valves.

Differences between Fat, Plus, Pursang, Airdale, and Magnum Fuses
It's a safe bet that most of the answers to this question can be found in various pieces throughout this forum in past topics.  But it is laborious to sift through it all to find an accurate understanding of what the differences are.  Are Fat and Plus the same plane?  How does the Airdale differ from the Pursang?  Does anyone know what the dimensions are and if the Magnum wings will attach seamlessly to any/all of the mentioned fuses.  What I'm looking for is something with tri-gear, folding wing, and gross weight capability of the Magnum but with a more accessible/open cargo area.

    Thanks, Dave.

The model IV and newer use the moronic rod end bearings in order to facilitate fairings and ribs in the vertical stab and rudder. Supposedly adding speed. IMO they just add complexity.

your spring should be just fine. I have a friend running this 8" on a single leaf and I run it on the double leaf. works great either way. just make sure the angle is correct. can easily be adjusted in a floor press. you're going to love that tailwheel

I also plan on going the Matco 8".  Would this also require a main leaf spring change as well, or can I just bolt the new tail wheel onto the double leaf system supplied with my Kitfox III?  I.e. unbolt the Maule and bolt on the Matco?

Hey Randy, Thank you for the reply and for posting the images.

I should have mentioned it, but in this case the kit is new (has never flown).  Looks to have been possibly a fabrication issue (I have heard from others with the same problem).  Maybe that is one reason for changing over to an adjustable system like on the Model IVs?

Congrats on the new bird.  The motor on your plane looks like a Stratus; it has a Stratus redrive, thermostat and carb setup.  The older ones used the dual drive belts but then went to a single 3" wide belt  Those are probably pretty old so really inspect them for aging cracks or just shange out the belt to a 3" to be safe (they are under $100).  It looks like the air filters are directly on the elbows to the carbs which is the stock Stratus setup as well.  It should be a great running motor for you.

What you have is the result of hard landings on the tail wheel over time that has caused some bending, stretching or possibly cracking of your lower longerons.  You may want to take the fabric off of the lower section of your fusalage and check it then do some repairs and reinforce it,  In the end, all those rudder pins should line up.

Thank you for the reply. Ed I told the owner he might want to do some homework on installing the wing tip tanks. I personally would not install them but it's his plane. I'm just getting paid to build the wings.

    Thank you
