  1. High Country added a post in a topic KITFOX STRUT TUBE SIZES?

hate to dig up the past but did you ever find out what size wall thickness he used and possibly what size rod ends. I'm planning to make new struts soon to replace my 3/4" ones that are on there now. I want to use 1" tubing. for the rod ends is it just a bolt welded into the tubing that the rod end screws onto? I'm thinking it may be better to weld a round coupling nut into the tubing then thread a rod end with male thread into it with a lock nut. thoughts???

Edit: or would these be better http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/an490.php?clickkey=4183  AN490HT11P seems you would have to weld it into a 3/4" .035 tubing or perhaps 7/8" .095  then weld that into the actual 1" strut tubing. or am I over thinking this???

Thanks everyone.  As soon as I learn how to post pictures I will start a progress thread. So far we have gutted the hangar in preparation for insulation , wall and ceiling finishing.  Penndot aviation dept came out and surveyed the runway. we need to cut some trees to keep the runway at it's current published length of 2200'.  It is about 3000' long but the trees create the need for displaced thresholds at each end.  Luckily My new neighbor is willing to allow me to trim his trees and several of the intruding trees are on my property.

No.  I'm going to try with a "naked" radiator under the plane in a near oem location.  (Same front to rear location, but centered side to side.)  I have - as with most of my other modifications - added threaded tabs to the airframe to mount the radiator instead of the herky-jerk long screws through the floorboards, OEM mount style.

If I have cooling issues, I will make my own scoop from aluminum.  I have the fiberglass scoop on my yellow plane and absolutely hate it.  It attaches under the floor of the plane and is near impossible to R/R it.  Therefore I have never taken it off.  I have also, therefore, never done a full flush of the coolant.

My project plane will have a plug put in the radiator to facilitate draining the coolant.  If a scoop is needed, I will make it so that the radiator is still serviceable.

    Larry,
Are you going to use the rad scoop that Kitfox makes?

It's been nearly a month since the last post on my Mangy Fox rebuild.

I am still working on the plane, just nothing real sexy to show, I've been doing the radiator plumbing, fuel plumbing and, of course, waiting on parts...

  6. 959 added a post in a topic NEXT QUESTION - WHAT'S A 670?

I remember when I first put the 604 ci engine into my Duster I ran into one problem after another.

It is just solving problems that are there because of going a different route than is the easy one and not giving up.

It's just about not giving up.

Once we got the cooling problem solved we have not run into anymore issue's.

Next I'm going to put the RK-400 clutch on the 670.

I thought that looked like a DC-6, but wasn't sure what a DC-4 Looked Like - think maybe they are only 2 engines?

Glad you made it back safely.  I would definately change to a K&N type if you can find one that will fit.  A few years ago I sucked one of those cheap filters through the turbo on my Ford; it became a real expensive filter.  I went to a K&N in it after that.

  13. SuberAvid added a post in a topic FAA considering ALLOWING 2nd PILOT for PHASE 1 TESTS

Jack and I were looking at this and the second pilot has to be a pilot that has considerable time in the same type and model to get enough points to qualify.  We kind of dismissed it since Jack does not have nearly enough time in an Avid or Avid+, but the primary pilot is not under these restrictions; the builder can decide to fly his own plane if he wants to as long as he has a pilot's license (SEL) in this case.  It is the second pilot who has to meet the qualifications.

Jack, We might have to relook at this and decide which of us should be considered as the second pilot....

I believe you can adapt the K&N filter to mate up to the Soob Carb intake if you have room - there may be an adapter?
One suggestion I read said to use the carb cover from a Horizon, and cut it down to minimum height, and the filter was in the snout (What kind I donno) - you could cut the snout and put the K&N on - the snout, or lower part of the cover, has a trap door for heat riser air which can be converted to manual setting.

Best advise I can give you, is to cut the top of the vertical post and measure the wall thickness - you need to insert a tube inside of it to make a strong splice anyway - I am guessing you have an early model something -  The Kitfox 4 stab is about 52 or 54", or so, in height -
I made mine about 4 inches less than that, and made the rudder extension taller so it overlapped the top of the stab to make a balanced rudder - I rounded my rudder at all outside points so not to have sharp corners which makes covering a little easier, IMO. - It could be done either way.  If you have the early hinges, don't forget to put a spacer (1/16"?) between the stab vertical tube and the hinge tube, and the same on the rudder hinge.
I also made the chord of all my tail feathers parts 6" more than the early Kitfoxes, and added trimtabs.

Do they make something besides a foam filter that will work?  K&N or something?  Sucking chunks of foam into the carb does not sound like my idea of a good time!  Glad you nursed it back around and got her on the ground in one piece.. all too often it does not work out that well.

Bet you didn't need a seal belt either   When mine quit I had that seat sucked so far up my a$$ that I don't think a 5 point harness would have held me any tighter

Wow! Thanks for sharing! That could have ended a lot worse!
I've often thought about just washing the foam filter out and using it for as long as I can. I have not done that and replaced it at every conditional inspection just because that made it easy to remember to change it.

I'm glad you were able to fix it easily and get back in the air! Thanks again for sharing!

My tach is hooked up to the gray wire.  I once was going to fly with the master switch turned off to do some testing.  When I did the mag check it did like yours...RPM increased about 1000 rpm with one mag switched off.  I turned the master switch on and it was back to normal.  These Rotax electrical systems are very sensitve to a loose or corroded ground too.  The ignition system can do some puzzling things like feeding back through other parts of the electrical components when there is a grounding problem.   I have never been able to figure out why mine did that with the master switch off though.

I am making a mod to my vertical stab to accomodate a taller rudder.  I see the o.d. is 9/16. Anyone know the thickness?

    Foam air filter
I had a little wake up call last week. Did my regular preflight including looking under the hood. Fired up my soob and warmed up until it was up to 160. When I taxied to take off and went to full throttle the engine bogged but caught up and I took off. Everything seemed normal but maybe just a little sluggish. I flew down the valley climbing at near full throttle. Levelled out and cruised for maybe five minutes. I throttled back for cruise. When I went back to full throttle the engine stumbled big time. I had a real moment of OH $#!T. Thank Christ it throttled up and I made the hasty return to base. Opened the cowl and took a close look at everything. First I thought ignition. Went to town and picked up new plugs. Put them in the next day. After I fired it up it would barely run without choke. When I looked real close at the air filter I noticed a very small hole eroded through the front. It is a washable foam type with a metal support grate behind it. When I removed the filter it was seriously eroded on the back side where it rubs against the metal grate. All the foam that broke away went straight into the carb. I took the air box off completely to see. The carb was visibly contaminated. I took the carb off(Holley 5200) and gave it a good cleaning. Be careful about what jet came from where. There is also a spring and check ball that need to go back in the right place. Put everything back on and ran it up. Purrs perfectly again. Ordered new filter foam from Bracket. The gentleman explained to me that air filter foam needs to be changed out every 2 years. I ordered 2 filters. Cheers. B
