If it had square tubing, then I think it must have been a Kitfox 5 or later - believe the 4 tubes are round, but need to check my book.  I was thinking that they used 5/8 or 3/4 tubes on the later models.
You also need to measure the crossover tubes - mine are 1 1/8" diameter x .049 wall, but that is not standard.   I have seen a rear spar attach tube broken, and believe it was probably done when wing was folded and trailered without supports in back / front?

The dreams of airport ownership.  The country was founded on dreams, if your gonna go you may as well go big!  With good talent and good workmanship comes good profits.  Wish you the best on the venture and hope it all turns out in your favor!

Ser# is 110 and yes it origionally had a Cyuna on it. My profession is painting with 3 years of commercial art at a vo-tech school as a teenager being my only formal training.. I can lay out some pretty decent paint schemes and do decent custom paint work but my business partner of the last 12 years is a world class airbrush artist who makes me look like an amature. together we come up with some pretty neat stuff. I like clean simple lines on high wing taildraggers but I am not apposed to some wild schemes on other aircraft type. If you google search images of Raeford Aviation Twin Otter you will se a paint scheme that I was commisioned to design. I didn't do the actual paint work because my current facility can only handle a Cessna 206 or smaller airplane. I am pretty computer illiterate and we don't have a web site but if you Google search images for Custom Painting By Cliff and Skip, you will see a few pictures of some of the stuff we have done.  I am currently jumping through the hoops of the local zoning board to get a zoning change for a 34 acre private airstrip to move my business into. The zoning hearing is on the 8th of October. If we are granted the zoning change needed to run my paint business at the airport, I will be closing on the property on the 31st of October and starting up grade construction to the hangar/pole building that same day. I will be able to paint planes with up to a 48' wingspan and a taill height of 11' 10".  The runway is about 3000'  in total length but has displaced thresholds only giving it an official length of 2200'.  I can probably trim some trees and end up with 2600' when the airport is reinspected by the state .  If anybody needs anything painted I will be happy to do it for you. I am going to need all the work I can get to pay the mortgage on this property. I am scared shitless and excited at the same time, I am going from having next to no debt , too being in BIG debt and I ain't no spring chicken. By the way thanks Akflyer for posting the pictures and the picture of my brother and I is right after our first flight together in the Avid (I'm the fat guy).

    Hey Ed,

Thanks for your reply. The reason I'm interested is because I'm trying to decide if I can put the longer KF wing on my plane without introducing forces it wasn't designed to take. I actually did what you said, and went and looked at a Kitfox here on our field. I'm not sure if it's a 4 or 5, but the uprights are 1/2" square tubing. ACS only lists .035" as an option for 1/2" square. My guess would be that's what they used. This KF has the long wings, so that's encouraging.

ChrisB do you have the contact information for Ron Smith at All-Pro Fiberglass, I have an early model cowl that has been butchered pretty bad and would like to replace it with a Model IV.I thought about trying a Kitfox cowl, but they are at $900 plus shipping.

Just making sure I have all my bases covered here. Does anyone know if they changed the elevator linkage on the MK4? Seems the heavier elevator and more surface area is gonna put more strain on the linkage. It seems plenty beef but that thing failing right at the fork where the threads are is one thing that has always concerned me a little bit.

    Strut attach fittings
Some advice for those making new struts or building new wings:
If you are planning to use larger rod ends, like mine with 7/16 thread and 5/16 holes (same thread as the early Piper Cub) - They will not fit the original strut fittings on the spars.
I am making adapters for mine, and will post photos later on if anyone wants to see them.
If I was building new wings from scratch, I would buy the rod ends first and make my strut inserts and spar fittings to match.

Thanks for the responses, but the axles aren't for me. They are for my buddy who bent an axle this weekend and only has a cell phone for accessing the internet. I will pass along the info and if you have an axle please contact Paul at his email address. I will recomend that he calls Matco.  Thanks, you guys have all the answers.

    Luke,
I am almost certain that skystar increased the diameter of those uprights by at least 1/8" - maybe 1/4" - when they went from the model 4 to model 5 - maybe you can find a 5 or later to measure.   I think the only effect this would have would be in case of a noseover?

I was just looking for thick walled aluminum tube, and I found that Speedy Metals had 2 1/4" OD with 1 1/2" ID for a price of $14.43 for a foot long piece.  18" was $21.43 (that would be enough for 4 hubs @ 4" each)  Wish I could weld aluminum, I would make some of these on my lathe.  Jim Chuk

Awesome news!  I think we are slowly pulling together some good info on where we can get parts.  Several members here are making some parts here and there that are for sale (toe brakes, F7A refit etc)  one day, we may be able to reliably be able to order the parts needed to fix our planes when they get ooopsied..

The clock is ticking now Chris, progress pictures and flight report in 3...2 3/4... 2 1/2...... 2 1/4.......

I think they do sell them, and if your running stock wheels they are fine.  I have to run wider wheels for the 30" airstreaks so the ones they sell are not long enough for me.  EDIT:  I bet that if you call George at Matco, he will make them what ever length you need.  I have had nothing but first rate experiences with Matco, they have always been very helpful!!

I am not sure if we have this info on the suppliers list "thread" or not, but maybe we should update it if we don't.

you do a WB??? I thought that was something one stopped doing about 3 minutes after they passed the PPL check ride   I do know that if I cant pick the tail of the Avid up, I should probly take some of the crap out of the extended baggage area that runs to the tail

In all seriousness... remember the golden rule folks, a nose heavy airplane flys poorly... a tail heavy airplane flys once.

My new cowl arrived from All-Pro Fiberglass. Ron Smith did a great job on it. He didn't trim a thing so there is raw fiberglass thread hanging everywhere around the edges. It looks looks great! I am so happy. Price for the MKIV cowl bottom, huge shipping box for it and Greyhound shipping to our local bus station was just under $200.00! I am blown away.

So now that I have seen first hand that he is real and SUPER reasonable price wise, here is a big plug for him!

He has Jab cowl molds, MKIV cowl and fiberglass molds and all Magnum fiberglass parts. If you need Avid fiberglass he is your man!

I forget what other thread was being discussed on, but Im posting here because this means I can get back to work on the Flat Avid!

This gives you the douglas part number for the wheel.

We just bought the 3 hole douglas wheels and drilled the other 3 ourselves.  We also made the lugs and had them welded on the wheel for the brake disk.  Make the lugs, bolt the disk to it to keep all 3 of the flat, then position them in the wheels with spacers below the lugs from the center hub to the lug to "jig" them the proper distance so you dont have a wobbly disk.  Tack them up them give the wheel a spin to make sure they run true before you bother welding them out.

I just bought 3/4" X .250" 4130 tubing from the local metal supply house and had a machinist buddy thread them for me on the lathe.

That is the quickest way to get the axles.  If your going to have some made, you may as well have a couple sets made as you WILL bend them.  I am on set 4 or 5 just from normal flying here.... Granted, I may abuse them more than some, but they do bend and its nice to just be able to pull one bolt, slip them out and put a new one in.  Make sure you use a GOOD grease or anti seize when you put them in or you will have pure hell trying to get them out later down the road.

I used a piece of tubing that would slip over the axle and some hardened all thread with tall nuts on it to make a puller to get the last set of axles out of my gear this spring.  It still took A LOT of heat and cussing ( I taught myself a few new words) and a few beers to get one axle out.

    Can't find fuselage structural diagram
Somewhere I saw a diagram showing the fuselage tubing that indicated where weaknesses were found. Seems like the uprights to the front spar carry through were one area that was marginal. It was a side view. Does anyone know where this diagram can be found? I think it might have been a hand sketch.

    Thanks,
