When are you getting in Joey? We are going to leave Friday after work then drive halfway out, but I know how that will go. If I'm three hrs out I will drive the rest of the way and get there late Friday night.

It is not a ultralight, it is a Mark IV Avid. It should handle turbulance better than a heavy airplane, less stress on the airframe. I kept it light and simple. No finished interior, only the basic legal instruments, sling seat, stol wing, recoil start, no electrical system, no radio or gps, no al leading edge, cargo compartment but no door, lightweight Stits fabric with minimun coats of dope on it. The fabric looks just about as good today as it did in 1996. Just a couple of small cracks under the door where my hip hits when starting. I started out at 456 but installed the plastic tanks and the bush gear with the Aero Classic 6x800x21 tubes and tires which added a few extra lbs. Same engine 3 overhauls. First one around $1500, 2cd $1200 no new crank, last one $4000 everything brand new except carbs, reduction case and crank case. Its has been a great airplane. The only thing is I use it for local flying only. At 7O mph it is not much of a cross country airplane.

Looking at the 10 day weather guesser, it looks like Oshkosh may be kind to you Alaska guys this year - highs in the low 70's, lows in the mid 50's. I better make sure my campers propane bottles are full, looks like I'll need heat!

480 and 1000 hours are both amazing. How many engines / overhauls?

Ultralights always get off quicker and climb faster. They also cant take as much turbulence.
What is your wing loading?
Friday was one of those very rare days here in Mizry - CAVU - No wind, not a cloud in the sky - and not one bump - Temps were in mid-70s, very cool for mid-July here.
We flew the J3 halfway West across Missouri, then turned South almost to the Arkansas border, then East to just above the Missouri Bootheel, then North up the Mississippi River to head back home. Almost 12 hours of flight time, with 8 stops and 4 T&Go - One Wonderful day of flying. And, I forgot my camera!
EDMO - hoping for 800 ew, like the Cub, but with higher wing loading.

Empty weightWeighed my Bandit today, came up with around 480 lbs. empty. I just used bathroom scales. I weighed myself at work, then on the bathroom scales. They were fairly close. As always It has gained a little since new though.

plane camping , Sullivan and McGregorWe've had the opportunity to go plane camping five time so far this summer. This one to sullivan lake Washington was real fun .there was ten planes there the last night .we stayed for three nights and met a lot of great people from all over the western states. Colville is only 35miles away for groceries and supplies .then the next weekend I talked my wife into driving the truck and camper and I flew my little float plane to McGregor lake Montana. Awesome weather and I made a landing on hwy 2 for a gas stop.landing on highways is legal in Montana, just have to wait for traffic to open up.I did put a nice little kink in our new camper backing down a road. But had fun nonetheless.

I have a cheap one from OReiley's. Not worth the $80 I paid for it. With these bore scopes you really get what you pay for...
Like a Harbor Freight ratchet. It works, but if you ever use a good ratchet (Snap-On or Mac) you will never use another HF pos...

Ak Bob,
I tried to look in old posts, but didn't find anything on borescopes. I was hoping someone would post the info you wanted.
I haven't tried these, but Harbor Freight has the cheapest one I have seen - $70 on sale to $130 depending on the ad - think it is color and it says camera? Part # 61839 and 62359. I thought I had seen a cheaper one, but cant find it today.
Hope this helps.

EDMO added a post in a topic Control stick spacing
Luke,
I agree - every change costs in building time - sometimes in money too. I started my Foxy in 1997 - it was 98% finished in 2007 when it fell off of the trailer in the Yukon Territory - Several changes and repairs and I am up to about 2016 to get it finished again.
I would keep the pedals apart even if they don't match the stick centers.
On the other hand, if you are not happy with your build, then why build it that way?
Good Building,

Okay, I sat in the plane with the pedals, stick, seat, and door installed. I don't think I would want to move the stick all the way so it is centered with the pedals. It would work for me, but for a bigger person it probably wouldn't be the best. It is a little farther toward the center than I would like though. I think I'm going to split the difference, and move the center of the pedals in and the sticks out so that they are centered on each other.
Ed, I know what you mean about making changes. I started building a plane back in 1991 when I was just out of high school. I made a lot of changes, and the build kind of stalled (mostly because I got married though). Believe it of not, I am trying to limit the things I am changing. I'll admin that I do have a hard time building to plans though...

Luked added a post in a topic 1000 hrs
That's great. I think there are a lot of homebuilts out there that have more hours in the build log than they do on the hobbs. It's great to see homebuilts getting lots of use once they are done.
I've never had much experience with 2 strokes, but I'm starting to think the Rotax 2 strokes must be pretty good. I guess I've been around too many certified types that dismiss them. Maybe if my plane didn't already have the tail stretch, I'd just bolt on a 582, and be done with it. Your 503 must be pretty good for you to stick with it for 1000 hrs.
