one step forward 3 steps back..had what looked like some light corrosion on on of the engine mount tubes.. After stripping it turns out its worse than we thought.  Found one that has just been overhauled and powder coated for 1000.. and the guy will load it up in his 180 and deliver it to us saving us 6 hours of driving.  still not sure what we are going to do with the stab and elevator.

Doug, we didn't get crap for snow fall this year.. there is virtually no spring run off this year and its has been blue bird days with high temps and no rain so far this spring.

I would have thought the rivers would be high in Spring with snow melt? Does that mean I'm too ignorant to ever move to Alaska?

ALL of those "reality" shows are scripted for the "drama" value.  I can't watch any of them any more, but, I wouldn't mind seeing Ariel in her bikini again...

Good eye's fellas and without going into to much detail and sidetracking this thread to much. The vents are in the caps thanks to some 3/16" brake line. There's a doubler in the nose gear tube and the picture is just at the right angle to not show the standard Avid 912 smiley face opening for the radiator. The oil tank is under the baggage compartment and doesn't have a cooler except the two lines running under the fuse in the wind.

I agree about Wild West Guns, occasionally amusing, but for the most part Ken makes me want to go check my wallet, then wash my hands. I did like the tag line on one of the show - 'There are two kinds of people in Alaska, those that carry guns, and bait'

When I was in Alaska, the tires on the cubs were getting up to the 4 foot mark - Finally, the FAA ruled that 36" was the biggest that could be put on the cub, because the big tires were blanking out the elevators.

Another stupid "reality show":   I am so glad that I left Wild West Guns before the TV show made "con-man" Ken a star!
I watched a couple of the shows, but had to go puke after each one, so I quit watching - It is all a bunch of scripted BS!
Nobody buys a gun without first asking the price (like they show)!  Notice that no prices are ever given.

Dresser is saying they are coming out with several new sizes.  I think the 27" will be perfect.  I wish they were a tubeless "all in one" tire like the AK bushwheels are.  The dresser tire in 4 ply should be pretty soft and work perfect for you and they don;'t break the bank.  For 400 bucks you should be able to have the tires and tubes and be ready to ply in the grass, gravel and sand.

Looking good on the panel, I just remembered that when I first tried putting my radio and GPS next to each other I got noise on the radio. Don't remember if it was the Magellan GPS or a PDA I had rigged up with  GPS software that caused the problems.  When I moved them about 18" away from each other, the noise went away.  That was with my Vertex Standard VXA-220 radio.  Jim Chuk

I have watched them all, it just pisses me off when the editors have to make a super cub sound like a turbine, or a 208 sound like a cub.. why the hell can't they get the editing right so the plane sounds like the plane that is flying.  They did show then doing some dumb shit on TV that has not helped the image.

Ed,  ERA heli has not been a part of ERA aviation for many many years.

That is looking great and it sounds like you will have a real performer!.  On additional comment; I can't see the gas cap vents.  I know there is some discussion on this and recently on this forum but the most trouble free and proven method is to vent through the caps.

I agree. I really liked the show. I watched all of the episodes available on Netflix. I wasn't so into the stories about everyone's personal life, but I liked being able to watch a show with some good aviation content, and interesting flying conditions. It also had some fairly funny humor at times. I don't know what the family is like in real life, but they seemed pretty nice on the show.

Flying Wild Alaska was my favorite TV show when it was on. I loved it even though it campy at times. Watched it every Friday night.

Flying Wild Alaska was ERA Alaska and is now  Ravin Air and is owned by and operated by all the idiots their talking about.
They should have known, when you do stupid stuff and put it on TV, your going to get everyone busted, not just you.

And BTW, she is a babbling idiot!

Nice looking 912 install! 1 Question and 1 comment:

I don't see a radiator hole in the cowl. How are you cooling oil and water?

I see you have the stock nose fork. Those can work great no matter what some will say, but you will want to make sure it has a doubler that either came installed or you put in. otherwise it can buckle. It's a pretty old AD for Avids, but with the big plane (MKIV with big engine) it is an absolute necessity, and your fork may not have come with the doubler installed from the factory.

The TV show never even mentioned the ERA Helicopter division - Does Jim still have it?  Their hanger was next to the UAA Aviation hanger when I was there.   Some of the AMT students went to work there after graduation.

Yeah, I like those too. It seems like Kitfox has continued to refine it's design over the years the way Avid probably would have if they had continued on as a full fledged kit manufacturer. I guess that's the nice thing about having another design out there that is almost identical.

I still have some parts to get though before I can put too many things together. Then I can get off my butt and actually get some work done on this
