  1. cowlove added a post in a topic Installing finger strainers on Catalina fiberglass tank? Options?

I fitted the homemade finger strainers, and am pretty happy with the results.  I added inspection covers directly under the fuel tank bungs so that they will be very easy to remove and inspect.  If there is residual fuel in the tanks because the lower part of the strainers are clogged, these inspection covers would make it very easy to catch the pour when the fittings are removed.   There's an inline fuel filter on each side before the fuel lines join together and go to the fuel pumps.

Ditto the thoughts on fuel flow gauges.  When I'm able to watch both fuel flow and pressure, I feel like I have my finger right on the pulse of the fuel system.  Very comforting.

I added an electric standby pump in parallel with the Mikuni pump, with external check valves after both pumps.  Given that there's a completely redundant fuel path, I was comfortable putting a fairly cheap gear-based gas/oil flow meter in line with the main pump.   I would *not* put such a meter in the only fuel path.

    Alaska Flyers,  FYI,
When I was flying into Birchwood in the 90's, there was what appeared to be a derelict Catalina parked there - looked like it had not flown or been maintained for a long time - always wondered what happened to it - but, not being a swimmer - didn't check on it.

Suber Avid raised his skylight that way too - He posted some photos of his -
Now, Leni has me wondering what the nylon-looking thingy under the bolt head is for???
Wouldn't it be easier to swing your wings using the fast-pin, and only putting the bolts in the front when you want to hoist it?  Don't you trust the fast-pin?  But, knowing how you fly, getting stuck at the edge of a pond, and needing a come-a-long and a tree limb for a hoist, guess the bolts are a necessity!

Not to hijack (no not trying to make it a pun) this thread, but I just saw how you have the skylight extending over the wing a little. I don't have gap seals there or any extension. I think that's a good idea. Maybe when I replace the skylight at a later date I'll do the same thing. Especially since I'd have to cut it to that width anyway.

good to hear your geting back at it!  Hope the knee is all better.  Before you go to far, if your having knee issues you may want to try geting in and out of the plane.  Akflyerbob stopped building on his because he cant fold his knee to get in and out of it due to the cross bar under the instrument panel.  I hope you can get in and out as I really want to hear some flight reports on it and see if I can use those against Bob to get back to work on his plane, I think it wil be a ton of fun around here.

I have gone through the knee spacer of last May 31, and the total replacement of  Aug. 20. The surgeon and my Internal Disease Doctor told me to do NOTHING until at least Feburary of this year. I complied. I then waited until it was warm enough, thanks to global warming (yeah right). I returned to the shop today, I had to clear away junk that my wife, and workers on my barn , had deposited just inside the door. I took 3 photos with my stupid smart phone, but it refused to send them to my computer. I started to check the left sponson to the photo that I have of Avid's final prototype. The depth of the sponson is close to that of the photo. It needs a little reshaping inboard, near the main hull.

Trackwelder, did you ever get the info you needed? If not, let me know.

I think in this case you would be safer to jack and block from the floor.   I was talking about hoisting for people with overhead hoists that are safe.

I know when I was flying and working on a Waco we would just wrap a strap around the engine mount and jack that way, but I don't have access to an engine hoist currently.

I'm curious about using a strap or something through the front spar carry through like Ed was talking about. I suppose I could weld up an eyebolt with a long enough throw to get it to work. I really would worry more about the roof of the barn that I am hangared in that the spar mount for only jacking one side up.

Look up and read 21.303(b) and you will soon know why I am a homebuilder too!
It OKs "owner-made replacement parts" for Part 23 certified aircraft.

    Leni,
do you use eyebolts with threads on the front, or the pin-type with the keeper?

Hey Richard. I never heard back from the administrator, so I posted the question in the forum for other users to comment on. A reply came back quickly to make sure you have javascript enabled. You can see his comments if you go over there, and look for a thread called "New user trying to register".

Thanks Leni! I'm not running a clutch but I do have a GSC in-flight adjustable prop that I can flatten out and idle the engine down really low which removes all the vibration that you refer to. Bryce

I have the eye bolts in the spars on all 4 corners and use a spreader bar to pick it from the top for most of my work.  If I am just swapping from wheels to skis then picking off the engine has worked well for me.  I am not too keen on just picking from the forward spar mounts as I an chicken about bending up the bird cage area.

the vibration is the worst at lower RPM and the MK IV mount helps more with that.  If you are running a clutch then the issue is a mute point as there is virtually NO vibration at idle using the clutch.

  22. akflyer added a post in a topic No thermostat?

at times running no thermostat can cause overheating issues too.  The thermostat will restrict flow and help the engine run cooler as well.  If you find that your still having overheating issues you can get machine washers to put in the thermostat housing to slow down the flow and give the radiator a little more time to cool the water.  I know that method is used in racing sometimes.

    Hello Everyone

I've been searching (trolling) around this site for a few years looking for build information. I've got a MARK IV with a 582, which I acquired from a friend who gave up on it long ago. It’s all there, he bought it new sometime in the early 90's after a visit to the factory. The wings are about ready for covering, that’s what I've been working on lately. I’m a A&P mechanic by trade, most of my career has been spent working on corporate aircraft. I've done a lot research on the Avid, this website's been a big help. Thanks!
