I'd be happy to and will measure for you. But know that my nosewheel is now in a different location than either the original Avid milkstool steerable nosefork or the RV6 full castering nosefork.

The original no suspension milkstool steerable nosefork was bent to allow it to be a sort of castering steerable combination affair with return centering springs and a single linkage to steer.

The RV6 style full castering nosewheel is just that, but the spring places it quite a bit more out in front of the original milkstool nosefork.

My rans conversion is a lot like the original milkstool nosefork, but has no caster bend. So it's fork is just perfectly in line with the nosewheel weldment. Sort of located in between the original Avid and RV styles. It is going to be actively steered with two linkages exactly like Rans does theirs. My feet and legs will be the steering and anti shimmy dampening and it will be direct steering unlike either of the other two configurations. I copied RANS. Their design works and is proven. I had to shorten the Rans fork which required a bit of creative design, but turned out well I think.

The nose tire can be as big as 800X6 but I am going to use a 600X6. I'll try an snap a photo or two and post. along with the measurement.

    Chris,
Can you do me a big favor and measure (within a few inches) from the center of the mains to the center of the nose wheel - assuming you have the mains set back to near the strut attachment.  Have you calculated weight on nose wheel?

I am so thankful that people choose to live in the "land of fruits and nuts" and in the "concrete jungle" of the east coast, and stay out of my part of this beautiful country - I have stayed in both, and have no reason to ever go back.  I just wish they would stay to hell out of the business of the rest of us.
As the old song goes, "Put me in the middle of Montana"!

    Project update:

    Control linkages: done
    Engine mount: done
Rans bush nose fork conversion: Done, working on steering linkage
Cowl: Am going to completely re do cowl. Boot cowl setup Builder did not acceptable to me. Going with two piece.Looking for cowl. No luck so far but have a couple of leads. One possibility is the guy in Montana but am unable to determine yet if the "large cowl" he has will work. I am planning to put the plane on a trailer and drive it to Caldwell to see if it looks like a KF 5 cowl will work.

Only Doug would come to Wisconsin and order a manhattan. If we could only get him to stay for a bit, we'd have him straightened out pretty quickly. I mean, my god, we fry the lobster here. Some etiquette, please.

Why in the hell anyone would CHOOSE to live in Mexifornia or New York is beyond my understanding. I don't care how nice the weather is in one and the Italian food in the other, I would never reside in either due to their communist governments.

Elkhart is right on the route if I drive, might as well pick one up and return there to save the gas expense from/to NY. Figured if there was ever any place that has new rentals at a competitive price it would be the hometown of all the big RV manufacturers. I tried a few of the local WI businesses but they jack prices pretty hard for AirVenture and some units appear to all but guaranty bed lice they were so rough. Still dunno if I'll fly or drive, last year was the first time I've ever driven and I lost nearly two weeks of my life!

On a side note, I've been scouring Craigslist for a decent popup truck camper and almost called you to check on one for me that looked to be within 15-20 mins from you. When I went back after checking the map the ad had been removed, boo!

[edit] Leni - LOL, you must be thinking of the ass powder puff. I only fart around family, just ask my wife. Even amoungst the boyz there is a certain amount of etiquette expected! Although I MIGHT have let one or two little rips fly after all the fried lobster and Manhattans last year!

You may have heard on the news about a Southern California last week a man who was put
under 72-hour psychiatric observation when it was found he owned 100 guns
and allegedly had 100,000 rounds of ammunition stored in his home. The house
also featured a secret escape tunnel.
By Southern California standards, someone owning 100,000 rounds is considered "mentally unstable."
In Michigan, he'd be called "The last white guy still living in Detroit."
In Arizona, he'd be called "an avid gun collector."
In Arkansas, he'd be called "a novice gun collector."
In Utah, he'd be called "moderately well prepared," but they'd probably
reserve judgment until they made sure that he had a corresponding quantity
    of stored food."
In Kansas, he'd be "A guy down the road you would want to have for a friend."
In Montana, he'd be called "The neighborhood 'Go-To' guy."
In Alabama, he'd be called "a likely gubernatorial candidate."
In Georgia, he'd be called "an eligible bachelor."
In North Carolina, Virginia, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky and South Carolina he would be called "a deer hunting buddy."
And in Texas he'd just be "Bubba, who's a little short on ammo."

I think I would rather try 5-10 pounds on the tail spring versus another 30 pounds in the baggage.  For sure you need to get that CG around 15-16" and you should see a marked improvement in the way she flys!

If you can add 30 useful pounds (survival gear etc) then it would probly be worth while going that route.  But if you survival gear is 20 pounds, then adding 30 more is just a waste of useful load.

I've always run it with the muffler; it is an FMF muffler with aluminum body and had the stacked plates that can be added and deleted to adjust backpressure.  I ran it with the plates for a while and built a deflector shroud to keep the exhaust off of the under side of the plane but was still getting some exhaust smell on occasion so I pulled all the plates and made a plate with a 1 3/4" down pipe and bolted it on.  I couldn't tell any difference in the noise level and it ran the same.  I don't know how it compares to the Status pipes and muffler though since Jack doesn't have his flying yet (hint, hint).

I had a  Pilot ANR headset I bought when I first got my Avid MKIV after flying it about twice and enjoying ringing ears for the next 12 hours.  They worked well for a lot of years but the rechargeable batter finally gave out on them and I ended up getting a transformer adapter from Radio Shack and plugging them into my auxiliary power port in the plane to run on plane power.  Still worked well.  Back in Jan this year I ran across a local guy selling a Bose A20 headset for a deal I couldn't refuse.  I had never been able to hear the wind noise in my Avid+ until now.  Best muffler ever.

Love seeing those pictures over the Rockies.  I didn't fly when I was living in Utah so only got to see those from commercial airline altitudes.  Would love to fly that area and Idaho sometime, it is beautiful country!  It would be soo cool to do an AFF flyin down there on a Idaho/Utah tour and up her on an AK tour.  Guess that will happen when we are all retired like Ed and rich like???

    Hello Doug
Your spring comparison photo was just what I needed.
I was concerned that the 3 leaf spring would raise my tail more than the 2 leaf and it appears it will not.
The 8" wide Matco tire is a  huge improvement in the sand but unfortunately it raises the tail  2" higher than when the 6" hard rubber Maule tail wheel is installed.
I was hoping the 3  leaf would not raise the tail even more.
The more Angle of Attack my Kitfox has the shorter it takes of and lands.

I just read the info. on your recent aircraft purchases.
Sounds like you have owned several Rotax 912's .
Let me know if you know of one for sale.

    Thanks again

Weight came in at 766 LBs the forward CG was 11.73 and the rear was 13.66. I have 20 lbs of weight in rear baggage  but I notice Randy is packing 50 lbs so maybe I should try that first.
