My buddy has the round "Avid" or "Cub" style tips on his hybrid.  (He prefers the look of it.)  My plane is faster, but there is little if any difference in takeoff or climb.

With the speed and power to weight profile of these planes, I seriously doubt weather there will be any more than a marginal difference.

I emailed him several times asking to aquire the business so we could get it back up and running. He emailed me back about a month ago stating that he has no interest in selling any part of the company. I find this very sad as he is single handedly killing the brand.

I don't see much "work" - just leave off the end and put on Kitfox tips - either permanent or removable - I like Hoerner tips, and have them for mine - Otherwise, you could just leave flat ends on wings.

    Randy,
My first suggestion would be to only put 1/2 inch of warp in the wings - I think there has been a lot of proven info on that.
By not having slats on the inner part, you may not need any warp, since the root should stall first anyway.

The next concerns the rear opening of the slats - On the Z-701, the plans call for the rear opening of the fixed slats to only be 1mm.    I questioned this with Chris H's son and he said that is correct.
Donno much about the moveable slats, but if the rear gets too high, then I would think the airflow would just go out and up and not follow the surface of the wing as much - guess your engineer has it all figured out better than I do.
I will share any info I can on the flaps/ailerons - you may come up with something better than Wittman's design.

    Banjoplayer,

The standard Avid MKIV HH wing with the .083 spars were rated by Avid at 1150 lb GW.  I talked to Steve Winder of UK Avid and Airdale when they first started (when they built your Avid+ airframe and mine) and he said that using the stock Avid HH wing on the Avid+ fusalage he would have no problem setting the GW at 1250 lb.  The Avid+ fusalage is built stronger than the Avid MKIV fusalage and even through the wing is unchanged, the overall strength is better.

Not sure about the rules in Canada but Willis should be able to give you insight there on getting his signed off.

Have you flown your Kitfox with and without the tips? Just curious if you noted a big enough change to warrant the work to adapt something like that on an Avid. I don't mind doing the work to make it custom!

David, He makes them in 4' and 3.5' panels for the cubs.  On a square tipped cub it would take 3-4' panels and a 3.5' at the tank end.  On a round tipped cub I am not exactly sure what the combination is.  Some leave the inboard 32" without the slats and they retain more rate of climb (the slats increase angle of climb but reduce rate of climb).  With my extended Avid wing at 13.5' to the last full rib before the tips I could run 3-4' panels and leave 1.5' inboard without slats or use 2-4' and 1-3.5' and leave 2' inboard without slats.  I have not decided on it yet.

I have not thought about splitting thet flaperons at this point.  I would like to complete the extended wings and fly it like that, then add the VG's, then the slats, then VG's to the bottom of the wing (which I think might be even more important with the slats on) and see what the affects of each are.

Kenneth, These slats just work with the wind pressure and angle of attack. As the angle of attack increases the wind gets under the wing and starts to flow through the slats which causes them to open automatically and as the angle of attack decreases, they lay back down on the wing.  Most I have heard of work this way without manual deployment so I am not sure what the advantage of the manual deployment might be.

Sign up over at team Kitfox, too. Stuff shows up there once in a while.

Otherwise, stay on top of Barnstormers and be ready to go if you find what you are looking for. They don't last long enough for any screwing around.

I've got them on my Kitfoxes. Nothing new there. The Avids didn't use a bolt on tip, so you are a little limited unless you go custom.

Okay! She runs again. Pretty smooth, too!

Everything I touch seems to break, though. I changed out the fuel pump only to find the main fuel valve was leaking. Took that out and rebuilt it with new o-rings only to find during the test run that the supply line at the "T" between the carbs is leaking. Sheesh!

I ran out of time before I could get into that, but at least the gearbox issue seems fixed!

WTB - I'm looking to take on a project. Kitfox or Avid
Hello all. I'm a private pilot, I own a Cessna 172 but I'm looking for some fun! Lol. I want a somewhat started project. Maybe ready for fabric? I have my hangar to work in and am working on my A&P licence. But want to build an experimental. I have cash and also a Mercedes convertable I'm willing to trade.
    Thanks

I realize this is an old post but I'm wondering if anything was ever done with installing hoerner style tips? I built and installed some on my current plane and the difference was so worth the 40 hours I spent building them. Now that I know what I'm doing (at least better) I'm sure my construction time would be about half that.

FWIW.. There is no gross weight on my mod C, or anyone elses.. not that is listed on any paperwork with the FAA anyways.  I have loaded mine up.. it handles it fine if you have enough runway to get off the ground.  I think my longest ground run was around 700'.  Water.. well I have been loaded where it took 4000' to get off the water, hence my need to have the 800 conversion

    Thanks for the hearty welcome.
I am thinking I should move this exchange off of the 'introduce yourself' sub forum and into the Fat Avids one but seem to be getting good response here.
I guess the first question I have, to those registered and flying Fat Avids, is what MTOW are you using and how did you arrive at it.
With the parts I have, c/w Heavy Hauler wings, I am trying to get it registered here in Canada at a gross weight of 1232 lbs.
Here Advanced Ultralights can be registered up to 1232 lbs and Basic Ultralights to 1200 lbs
Amateur homebuilt can be registered at any weight, however 1232 lbs is the maximum gross I can legally fly with an Ultralight Pilot Permit,
As I said previously, I have looked at the Canadian Aircraft Registry, where MTOW's are published with the registration, and have found quite a few Canadian Avid Mk IV's with Gross Weights of up to 1200 lbs.
I may have to contact them to see how they did it.

There is a reference to a wing modification on the Airdale site that indicates a 1400 lb gross:
-Modifications to Avid wing to increase Gross Weight capability to 1400 lb.
-Full stress analysis to comply with JAR regulations at 1400 lb. Maximum Takeoff Weight.
Is anyone aware of what the modifications are?
Since I am going to have to strip all components of fabric prior to my "pre-cover" inspection I will have the opportunity to make these mods then.

With regards to the Carry Through Tube spacing, yes, the vertical pivot tubes / "bushings" (rear) and the front vertical attachment tubes, were all removed.
The rear ones moved back and front ones moved forward slightly in the Carry Through Tubes.
This results in the vertical tubes (front and rear) not being located center in the Carry Through Tubes.
I fretted about this pre-purchase but am getting over it now.
The Fuse is under a tarp in the backyard but I will get some pictures of what's been done soon.
I am sorting through the stuff that came with the plane and reading through the Mk IV manual before I start anything but hope to start working on it before the end of the month.
Before I can begin I have to have the MD-RA come and inspect it to ensure the 51% requirement is met for a home-built.
I envision me having to disassemble what I have piece by piece until he says "yeah, that looks like 51%" .... we'll see ... this is Canada after all.
I have applied and hope to get an inspection scheduled within the next week or so.
Anyway, so far I am delighted with my purchase and the response from this forum.

I doubt the builder(s) really knew what he/they wanted.  Most of these airplanes went to folks with little or no aviation experience.  Just the desire to fly.  I would think that this one will make somebody a really nice ride with some changes.  It's got good bones I think.  To tell the truth I have been battling with my brain trying to justify owning an Avid while I build a Zenith.  It don't pencil out you know?  A new minimalist panel, gear, wheels and tires, a decent tailwheel, and there you go.  But after all that it's still a C model with insufficient gross weight for my mission.

I don't think it's crazy at all. It's called an experimental aircraft for a reason! I've always wanted to build a set and see what they would do to enhance performance. I saw a set on a CH701 years ago that was spring loaded so that it would push it when the aircraft gained speed and then deploy again as you slowed down for a landing. It was a very simple set up and other than figuring out what springs to use would be easy to build and reduce drag as the upper cruise speeds.

I agree with Leni.  Take off your elevator and build a balance on the ends of it to gain the surface area you need.  Look at my Mangy Fox build thread for what I did with the tail.

A little welding and tube fitting is pretty easy to do.  You've already done fabric work, so that isn't an issue...

VG's are most definitely necessary for operating an Avid off a 4000 ft paved strip! What's with the gianormous holes in the panel?  I wonder what the thought process/mission profile was during the build??

I thought your dad had a MK IV kit?  If he didn't sell it then go steal it from him

Mine has "extended" tail feathers as well that look to have been made by the builder.  I have been thinking of making tail feathers like Larry did for his mangy fox.  I want more elevator when flying on floats, and I think if we put an air balance on it like a super cub, it will lighten the stick force when you pull full flaps.

    WANTED: Updated tail feathers
I was sitting right next to a MKIV yesterday and I noticed how much bigger his elevator was than mine. I measured it and it's 4" wider at it's widest point and he had the cable actuated trim tab. I can live with my rudder but it's quite a bit bigger too when you can see them side by side. Besides Airdale does anyone know where I can have one made or does anyone have a set from a kit that I could I steal temporarily as a template? I have an electric servo for trim and all the wiring. My plane's wing will never break in a stall its always the tail that quits flying. The VG's and gap seals helped but it's still the limiting factor. I knew the MKIV tail feathers were bigger but it's a lot more significant than I thought.

I agree with Ed on this one.  The plastic leading edge will help if you take a little excursion through the willows or tall weeds etc.. but dont help with a full on tree.

I have whacked 1" alders and willows with my aluminum leading edge wrap and didn't leave any permanent marks other than the streak / stain in the paint
