I thought your dad had a MK IV kit?  If he didn't sell it then go steal it from him

Mine has "extended" tail feathers as well that look to have been made by the builder.  I have been thinking of making tail feathers like Larry did for his mangy fox.  I want more elevator when flying on floats, and I think if we put an air balance on it like a super cub, it will lighten the stick force when you pull full flaps.

    WANTED: Updated tail feathers
I was sitting right next to a MKIV yesterday and I noticed how much bigger his elevator was than mine. I measured it and it's 4" wider at it's widest point and he had the cable actuated trim tab. I can live with my rudder but it's quite a bit bigger too when you can see them side by side. Besides Airdale does anyone know where I can have one made or does anyone have a set from a kit that I could I steal temporarily as a template? I have an electric servo for trim and all the wiring. My plane's wing will never break in a stall its always the tail that quits flying. The VG's and gap seals helped but it's still the limiting factor. I knew the MKIV tail feathers were bigger but it's a lot more significant than I thought.

I agree with Ed on this one.  The plastic leading edge will help if you take a little excursion through the willows or tall weeds etc.. but dont help with a full on tree.

I have whacked 1" alders and willows with my aluminum leading edge wrap and didn't leave any permanent marks other than the streak / stain in the paint

No sir, you dont need to open a new topic for each question, but if it is something totally unrelated then it may help for guys doing searches of the forums to find answers on a specific topic.

Something you could do, is start a build thread under the MK IV section and post all your questions and build progress under that one thread so it will all stay in one place for you.  If you would like, I can move this thread to its own topic under the MK IV section and you can just keep adding onto this one.

Thanks for the input, I will go with no metal.  The missing braces are for the inboard and outboard ribs from the corner of  the rib (near the trailing edge) to the rear spar, about a 12" brace.

Has any one reinforced the wood rib flaperon tabs with metal?  They seem to be a week point. I am considering laminating .030 Alum. on each side. They still fit the slot on the flaperon bracket as the tab seems to be thin.

This is my first Avid, I did start a Fly Baby some years ago but sold it when I thought I had a medical problem (it turned out I did not) and I was also moving from Idaho back to Colorado for retirement.

As it show I am new to the forum I have lots of question, do I need to open a new topic for each one?

    Thanks Jon

  6. 6320012s added a post in a topic Leading Edge Slats

Wow, Is the idea to run them full length?  I have been noodling on a set up like the Highlander STOL, but I don't think their slats increase the chord nearly as much as what you are trying.   Are you going to try and split the flaps and ailerons?
It seems like their flaps are at least as important to performance as the slats.

    Leading Edge Slats
I borrowed a slat panel that Randy Apling is making out of carbon fiber for the cubs and fabbed a mounting pattern for my Avid wing out of 1/8 plywood. I made it with 3 mounting positions so I could move the leading edge of the slat up and down.  Randy says the best spot on the cub is with the hook line where the convex top and concave bottom meet under the leading edge of the slat at 5.5" ahead of the leading edge of he wing and 3/8" above the bottom of the wing.  With the Avid undercamber wing I think it might need to have the height of the leading edge a little different so I made the mounting plate with the 3 holes so I could adjust it.  It looks like it fits pretty well but the large amount of washout in the Avid wing really shows.  With my new wings I plan to reduce the washout to 3/4" so It should lay on the wing a lot smoother.  The opening is limited to 3" with pins when mounted.

The last set of pictures is with it on a cub wing so you can see the comparison; not that much different.  I think it will work on the Avid wing OK.

OK, what do you guys think?  Am I crazy for thinking seriously about doing this?

I didn't mean to sound like I would go tree whacking just because I had a leading edge wrap on a wing, simply that things happen. The example was an extreme case, but like Ed said, just a little protection from rough handling more than anything.

I understand that just about any airplane would be down for the count for a while if tree whacking were involved!  Now if that there just a tree instead of another smiley! lol

I'd love to have a place out in BFE like that. Always wanted to live on a strip or airport, but can't afford the crazy HOA places that are fly in communities.
    Cool pictures too.

Short video of a guys home strip
Put 3.1 hours on the hobbs today. Flew to 2 new spots I had never been. One was a ranch where Bonanza, Little House on the Prairie, Bad Girls, Unforgiven, Back to the Future 3 and a bunch more movies were filmed. Sure felt good to get out and land some new places today!

Here is a link the Ranch http://www.visiting.hillvalleycity.com/hill_valley_1885/hill_valley_1885.html

Didn't take many pics but here's a couple

My friend Scott in his S-6. I keep telling him he needs bigger tires

At the movie ranch. The owner was 80 and sharp as a tack. His stories about flying a cub off the strip in the 60's and the film crews throughout the years was amazing. Sounds like Michael J Fox was a real prick back in the day. I def plan on going back and taking some more pictures.

And here's a short video I tossed together of departing a buddies strip. He has a MKIV and is a member here. Thanks again for letting me come into your strip Jim!

I think the plastic leading edge trim that Kitfox sells is good protection for the front spar for normal mis-handling - but tree-hacking is a little much!

you do that in a kitfox or avid and your looking at a new spar.. the spar is the leading edge so whacking trees that leave dents will dent your flying for awhile.

I realize that the leading edge probably doesn't need this, but from my viewpoint of using it in the backcountry and flying tight into trees at times I think the little added protection wouldn't hurt. Not that I'd try to test it against a tree but I've seen some strange things that people have done over the years. I once saw an ag-wagon leading edge that had a dent about 4" into the leading edge. The pilot just kind of turned his eyes to the ground and said, "yeah, didn't see that tree on my approach", when I asked about it. He told me later that it was just a sapling but it took about a 2' wide section patch to fix it! Good thing those ag-wagons are built fairly tough.

At 80 degrees of flaps you might as well be able to tilt the wing! That's some serious barn door hanging down at that rate. I'd like to see pictures of that.

  21. SuberAvid added a post in a topic Flaperon Question

Thanks for the thoughts; always good to bounce this off of others.  Flutter would certainly be a concern since they are flaperons and not separated flaps.  If they were only flaps I would not be as cautious in experimenting with this.  Maybe not the best thing to experiment with unless we could test them in a wind tunnel first.

Makes you wonder if you were to experience some flutter when you pulled full flaps if by letting off on the flaps the flutter would stop quickly?

I guess this would be a strong argument to have separated flaps.  The Kazoom has extended flaps plus the lengthened flap chord and they deploy to 80 degrees; but it sounds like they only drop them to that right at landing to help slow the plane.

Anyone know of a Narco ID-824 (or maybe 825) laying around real cheap or trade for the Cessna/ARC indicator? The old ARC VOR indicator will not hook up to the Narco 12D radio.

Headliner from Aircraft Spruce. About $110 but would have thought it would have cost much more than that.

The original headliner started ripping under it's own weight as we were removing it. Very brittle even though there was not a single tear in it when we started takine it out.

The plasic was all in good shape, just faded and stained. They cleaned and painted up nice and will look great when all are put back in.

Plane had not been annualed since 2001. Unsure when it ran last. After cleaning carb, lines, gascolator and hooking up a gas can to fuel lines, we tied it off to a pole in my shed, I had my boy strap in the left seat, give 2 shots of prime and give about 1/8" on the throttle. (First gave him shut down procedures if something went wrong.) 2nd flip of prop gave a caugh. 3rd flip, it started right up and purred. Idled down to about 650. Later with plane out side, found out you can not get much over 1100 rpm by feeding in gas from a gallon can sitting on the roof through a piece of 1/4" OD aquarium hose.

You didn't comment on that engine I uploaded PIC of which I was thinking we should put in the 150. (Just kidding.)

For 4.5 years I had a 72 C150 which I got my license in. After getting this one, I started reading on 150s. Sounds like the older straight tails perform considerably better than the later ones.

Always wishing I had more time/stuff to post on this site. Also wished I had more progress to post on our Avid project.

The pictures did not upload because if file size. There was a message about max file size. I think the camera is 10mp or so. The one or 2 pix that did upload I took with my old V3m razr. I resized the pics and they came right up. Wasn't paying attention to the size message or what I resized them to.
