  1. EDMO added a post in a topic GROVE BRAKES AND MATCO MC-4 ?

Thats great news for me - Just in case someone else reads this, the Matco brakes I have for sale with my old Grove gear are the heavier (double puck?) than the ones that came out on the earlier foxes/avids - They should work good on a 1200 gvw or less - I just changed because I wanted the heavier Kitfox 7 spring gear, and got Grove wheels and brakes with it.
    Thanks again,

Avid made a couple of different belly pods. I have the old promo videos from Avid that show them - even a crop spraying option!

    Bullet style:

I can't find a photo of the "pregnant guppy" style pod...

  9. Av8r3400 added a post in a topic GROVE BRAKES AND MATCO MC-4 ?

I could go on and on about this!!

I have the Matco MC4 Masters in my plane. The original brake on my plane were the inside-disc Douglas wheel setup with single puck Matco calipers. To say they sucked would be an absolute insult to things that suck. They were terrible in the extreme. I could barely hold the plane at a 3000 rpm run-up, much less try to stop on a short landing.

I upgraded to the Grove gear, wheels and brakes off my project plane when I bent my bungee truss (Story told elsewhere on this site).

These brakes are amazing in comparison. They are the double puck style calipers being run by the unmodified Matco masters. They are strong and reliable. I like strong brakes. If you jam on them hard you could nose over the plane. Some people don't like this, but I want to be able to stop, so it doesn't bother me. I can hold the plane with my larger tires with full power! That's what I like!!

Below are photos of the old and new brakes.

Not sure I've ever seen an Avid made cargo pod. Is it similar to the Kitfox cargo pod? Curious now for the pics...

I took a pic showing the difference between a KF 4-7 Riblett vs. Avid Speed rib. As you can see, NEITHER are flat bottom.

Hopefully, that will halt the hijack of this classified post.

GROVE BRAKES AND MATCO MC-4 ?
Can I expect good braking with Matco MC-4 combined with Grove Calipers the size used on the Kitfox 7?
Should I plan on getting the reducer kit that Matco sells?
I think that Grove operates at 600 psi, and Matco about 450.

I will take a tracing, or any way I can get a print - Up to me to find out how accurate it is - no law against it unless you intend to sell them.

    Okay. I'll play along!

    I'm Av8r3400 (aka Larry)

I am currently flying a Kitfox Model IV-1050. Powered by a 80 hp Rotax 912UL72" Taper tip, Nickel inlay prop(now) Grove Gear, Grove wheels and double puck brakes, 21x800x6 Aero Classic Tires (with skis in the winter!)Registered as an ELSA, so I took the 16 hour class and hold the inspector's license for it
I'm also building/restoring a Model IV-1200 Classic. This also has a 912UL and will sport the same gear package. I'm planning some tail modifications that I will detail here as I get to them.

Herman - Get a hold of this guy, Paul Leadabrand. He operates a business called "Stick and Rudder" in Idaho. He's running a big tired SLSA Kitfox (Factory Built) as a flight school. He should be able to give you a bunch of information on performance.

I would guess that with 100 hp, you should still see 110-115 mph fairly easily.

Some day I'd really like to get out there and do some training with him...

    I want to buy.
I believe the model 4-7 with a 912S and 26" air streaks will meet my needs.
What speed will these Kitfoxes cruise at burning 5 g/h with 26" Air streaks?
I spoke with Sky raider regarding their Frontier and got the impression they are marketing the pilots that prefer Lycomings over 912's.
Their wing loading is higher than Kitfoxes and Highlander which I assume would feel more solid in turbulent air.
My model 1 feels like a toy airplane in anything but mild turbulence.
My wish would be a Highlander with a faster wing even if it gives up a little short field performance.
Or a Kitfox with adjustable seats and more open baggage area.
Any one know of 912 Kitfox's for sale?

    That's the rub, Ed.

The only drawings you will find of this rib will be a tracing of an existing rib or a reverse engineered copy. Neither of which I would trust. Kitfox has less than zero incentive to publish the engineering details of it, therefore they never will. It gets into the whole intellectual property issue...

This has been discussed here before.

If this is like the skyraider - or was it skyranger? - I saw the builders prints for on line - I wouldnt touch it with a 100 foot pole - what I saw was a bunch of aluminum tubing connected by 1000 bolts and nuts - too danged many things to come loose, IMO. Maybe this is a different plane than the one I saw?
