    RPM on Climb Out
    Question...
What is the ideal Rotax 582 RPM during a take off climb out at say 65 mph with full throttle?
Online research has numbers all over the place.  I've heard 5800 at ground roll, 6200 during climb, and no more than 6400 with full throttle straight and level.
I can't seem to find any official document on this.  Only opinions.
What RPM should I see at full throttle at the beginning of the take off roll?
What RPM should I see at full throttle during my climb out at Vx or Vy?
What RPM should I see at full throttle while straight and level?
What is a good min RPM to use as a decision point prior to take off or aborting takeoff?
Answers with citations would be helpful to all I think.
    Steve

Zadwit, how about all the broken tailwheel structure? It looks like it cracked the steel back there to sever the entire TW structure. I suspect your landing was very, very hard. Any idea of the G's on impact?

Great idea, Fred!  Unortunately, my nearby friends tend to be little old guys like me.  I have, however found that by far the best tool for holding the tension on wraps already made is a pair of vise grip pliers!  I have an installation tensioning tool that shows promise too, but I need to first validate that my loop terminations will not let go at maximum extension.  If successful, I'll share some pics.

Id be VERY careful flying that "hatz" type coil spring shock stut...ONe hard landing, or hit a ditch or anything to bottome the springs out and you WILL bend metal...
If a person was determined to fly this setup, get with Leni and do what he did, lengthen the slot and install stiffer springs. or

INstall bungee gear like a J-3 set on the shock struts

Or install the newer nitrogen shocks if you have the money....
I liked the wide gear, makes the plane a lot easier to handle....
large tires take up a lot of shock too

Maybe if you built a new mount.  I thought it was a pain to see over the cowl, (like a Kitfox)  ((sorry Kitfox lovers)) so I built a cowl that didn't sit so high up and leave 4" or 5" of empty space above the engine and under the cowl.  JImChuk

This is not a new concept NSI and a couple other gearbox companies did this. As far as windmilling in flight, it will be the same as running a centrifigal clutch.

Oh and I forgot another reason to have the sprag, especially with big (high MMOI) props.  The Yamaha shuts down really fast and abrupt, with virtually none of the "coast down" that a 2 stroke has.
So without the sprag, when you shut down, the prop momentum is forced to stop abruptly as well, which also causes some shake and stresses with each fluctuation of deceleration from compression pulses.
With the sprag the motor shuts down how it likes and the prop just overrides and spins down like a free turbine turboprop.
Maybe teal can post up his vid of test run and shutdown with the sprag.

Status update: Got the door latches, window latches, window hangers and windshield installed. Put down some matt black vinyl on the dash too to help with glare. Will be working on panel, flaps and turtle deck while I wait on my engine parts to get checked out. I just hit the 600 hour mark, so if anyone wonders how long it takes.. Still a ways to go...............

The KF 4 (small rudder)seems more stable in rough air, whereas the 3 needs constant rudder correction to counter the eileron inputs. If I was to rebuild my 3 I would consider the conversion. The big tail 1200 fox is a major leap forward in stability also.
As a side note the performance of the 4 v's the 3 with a 582 is the same in all areas.

Very good to read that you were not hurt (other than aybe some pride) and for once again reinforcing the lessons my CFI kept pounding into my head, “Stabilized approach”....”STABILIZED approach”....dang it Columbus, “STABILIZED APPROACH”

Who here has flown a Kitfox 3 and Kitfox 4 close enough together to say how much better the 4 flys then the 3?   I know the 4 has better controls in that it controls adverse yaw, but is it enough to change out all the controls?  My Avid Mk IV is much like a Kitfox 3, and it flys fine.  Now the Kitfox 4 wing maybe a different story.  Good STOL performance, plus faster then the earlier wing as well. Then all you would maybe need is the Kitfox 4 ribs, plus heavier drag tubes if those are different, leading edge plastic strip.  Maybe need to go with the 4 flaperons then as well.  Stuff you don't use from the 3 would be worth some $ to sell.  Just some random thoughts as I have a snack for lunch.  JImChuk

Its so much easier to get a friend and do it one on top and one under plane. Makes it at least manageable. I'm sure its been done solo, but is it worth it? With help you can have the job completed in less than half an hour. Just sayin..... :-)

    Getting settles in the Hangar
We got the hangar all set up and I am about ready to start back to work on the final pre-inspection list. It's just a bunch of small pain in the ass stuff that needs cleaned up before the big inspection. We invited the local EAA Chapter to hold a meeting at our hangar to hopefully connect with some of the other Experimental builders/ Flyers on the Airport, Hopefully THE MACHINIST can make it down???

It's not a simple upgrade. I documented all part #'s and descriptions for the items necessary to retrofit KF4 wings and control system to a KF3 here:

Finally got the half hanger sorted out, lights installed etc, and actually did some work on (removed) the rudder pedals. Floor plywood is starting to crumble due to age and lack of finish. Going to remove all the controls, brace the fuselage sides, reshape/enlarge the tail feathers and build new rudder pedals with proper geometry and re-powdercoat everything, Going to make the tail similar to Av8r3400's and copy his fuselage and rudder pedal mods.
I want to update the controls and wing to KF4 but every time I talk to KF about it I seem to get the hard sell "buy the whole 4 wing quick-build" instead of these are the parts you need to swap out and this is the cost.  Same thing with the control system. They act like they don't want to sell the parts. I may have to flatten the wing and build a 4 control system the hard way?
