World War One Pilot skills demonstrated. Real footage.
Everyone knows who the Red Baron is. How many people know who the 2nd most decorated pilot from Germany was? The link below is old footage of him performing incredible flying skills after his motor is killed.

    Dan:

Use the same oil as used in the fuel and make sure you have no air in the rotary reservoir a nd associated lines.
It's been a while since I drove a 582, but I seem to remember the Rotax manual describing how to fill the rotry valve reservour to prevent air in the lines.

Thanks, but it's a long way from done. But I'm more and more convinced that it's not going to end up in the dumpster.
tonight's progress was getting the rest of the cowl off the plane and into my basement shop, so I'm finally not freezing my hands off working on it:
    doing the preliminary trimming:
There are an awful lot of bubbles in this thing. Glad it's not structural or it would be in the dumpster.
And started getting ready to install the joiner strip between the 2 halves
I'm using duct tape again as a mold release.

I managed to get the lower half of the mold to come with the cowling when i pulled it off the plane. Some of it will get cut away but it helps the part hold its shape and not deform under its own weight.  I'll need to post cure it at some point.
And you'll notice that i managed to save the circular area around the hub which will help when i join it back together to lay up the joiner strip between the 2 halves.

And we all know the job isn't official until you've shed some blood on it:yes that's really my blood.

    Better aileron response
Have you ever had a larger person sitting in the passenger seat and during landing or takeoff found you needed to input rapid and large airleron displacement to compensate for wind gusts?
I have whe I flew a young lady with what we might call "thunder thighs."
The stick slapped against her and I barely had enough deflection to keep the wing tip from touching the ground.
This was on my model B. So I found that I could reverse the bell crank at the place where the aileron push rod connects to the mixer.
So I have finally made this same mod on my MK4.
At cruise it takes a bit more force to move the ailerons, but you really don't have to deflect them much at cruise. It's diring low and slow that the augmented deflection came in handy.
During my testing today I also founf the if I deployed just a bit of flaps two things happened.
The aileron pressures were greatly reduced and the roll rate was awsome. Secondly the TAS increased about 3 MPH with that little bit of flap deployed. I found after landing that the previous owner had a bit of reflex in the flaps which while it can benefit with extra cruise on aircraft with normal flaps, it actually makes aileron movement harder.
After landing I adjusted the mixer to add 3 degees down in the clean position.

I took photos showing before and after. You will notice that one arm is longer thn the other so with the short one now connected to the aileron push rod a small movement makes a larger one at the mixer.

Got my engine home this evening after a 2 hour round trip. A fuel injected 55 hp w/ exhaust, carbs too and all assoc. parts. Will need a gearbox instead of the belt drive though. Also included a Warp drive prop.  Ended up getting it all for $1750.00. Will need a motor mount, same as a 503 mount.

I would think the number of fold, unfolding cycles would have to be astronomical for there to be a problem.  Like the elevator horn bolt on an Avid, this might be something to be inspected every so often if you fold on a regular basis.

  9. Av8r3400 added a post in a topic Kitfox IV 912 exhaust

I have that system shown in the box, installed on my plane now.  I hope it lasts.  My next step will be to replace the slip/sleeve joints on the muffler with proper ball and socket joints to allow for some movement.  I believe this is the major problem area.  It is where my first plane cracked (as well as around the stinger) and where my last system on the plane cracked prior to the stinger failure.  If you look at the cracked muffler you can see the major reinforcement pieces around the slip joints.  This misaligned the sleeves enough that assembling the system went from a real pain to almost impossible.
IMO, this exhaust system is a poor design from Kitfox with many area that could be improved.

Good to know about stinger variants. Thanks!
I saw a newer KF exhaust and it is a far better design in that the front and rear header pipes are offset symmetricaly on both sides where they enter the muffler. That would provide far better triangulation than having the offset on only one side like mine. But mine is what it is. I’m just happy that the photo you posted looks like what I have and is still available and I may not have to do custom.
    Thanks Larry!

Yes, you can still get an exhaust through Kitfox for a model IV.  There are a couple variations, though.  They deal with the angle of the stinger exit.

Well for better or for worse i cut the cowling in half and removed the top part from the mold.  Couple reasons, first off i only recently found out how dangerous it is to leave the air filter uncovered so that moisture can get in the engine. I reached in the intake and wrapped some plastic around the filter but not very well. Now i can secure it better. Hopefully the last couple months hasn't destroyed my engine. Fortunately utah is pretty dry usually but we've had 2 or 3 periods of damp weather during those 3 months it was uncovered. Second reason is that i hope to take it to get the new gear brackets welded on soon and a 60 mph wind might have ripped the whole cowling mold off.
I never added the last 2 plies that i previously mentioned that i was planning on. I'm going to see if adding some stiffeners will be adequate. Maybe a little more work and might be a little on the flimsy side but less weight. It feels really light which I'm happy about.

The one in the box looks exactly like what is on my plane except mine is missing the tailpipe safety clamp. Mine has cracked in a few places which a friend has welded up but I think it is on its last legs. However it was flown for over 300 hours before I got the plane.
Is that exhaust still available from KF or some other supplier?

I installed aviasport EGT instrument from Aircraft Spruce... Spruce also has the "K" type thermocouples but kinda expensive. If you look on ebay they are pretty cheap so I ordered several . I put the system together on the benche and used a torch and a westach egt system as a test standard and they both read the same... .the aviasport is easier to read.
one instrument changes from front to rear cylinder every 2 secs so one guage for 2 cylinders....had good luck with it so far.
Also the instrument needle has an expanded scale so is easier to read...

Like I say, go to ebay and look for "K" type thermocouples.....pretty cheap

Vance is absolutely right on this egt probe placement.. I went thru the exact same problem.. mine were too far out and the holes drilled from the side.....once I got it set up properly, everything fell in place and the egts read normal now.....mine run about 1050-1100 depending on where the prop pitch is set.... the prop pitch will affect egts but yo9u need to know you acan trust the egts readings before making other changes.....

Thanks for the thoughts guys. Even with the strength of the quake, damage was minimal. Some buildings were damage and a few roads were messed up but overall we got off pretty good. I have noticed the gas company trucks around, so some folks did have leaks I'm guessing. I haven't been able to get up to Randy's hanger to see how our Avids did. He's down on the Kenai with Leni working on the exhaust system for his 912. His family is fine.

I looked over mine this last year and saw no significant damage or wear, after 22 years and maybe 800 hours. I think they are nicely oversized for the job.

Check your gas lines! I was up there a couple years ago when a similar magnitude quake hit and it was almost a non event except a gas line in at least once house broke and a spark blew said house up with a couple of fatalities.
