I think my cowl is longer from back to front than the 4 piece cowl, the one with the 2 cowl rings on the front.....

Ok I'm beginning to think the guy who sold me the plane totally snowed me about all the service bulletins being complied with.  So far not a single one that I've looked up has been. Right now the one I'm wondering about is the plastic spinner on the prop. Given that we're about 2 decades after the issuance of that bulletin I'm wondering, are those props and aluminum spinners even being made anymore?

If you do much cruising at altitude, and running appropriately leaned, I would think you'd appreciate an oil flow driven by rpm & throttle position, & hence not leaned, over the leaned oil flow (along with fuel) with premix.  Isn't there a seisure risk for under-lubricating a 2-stroke?
I live in a high-moisture environment and am concerned that synthetic oil may not provide adequate rust protection.  If you live in a dry environment, you could fix the OI lever at the 70:1 position, fill the oil tank with synthetic, and be able to tank up at any airport, without bothering with premix.  And you'd have no cable to worry about!

Mark,  what is the length of the yellow part of your cowling?   JImChuk
PS, just looked at your email to me again, and you say the cowl is just two pieces....  Top and bottom.  So forget the question.  That is different from what my Kitfox 3 and 4 cowls are.  They were both 4 pieces.

I ceramic coated my exhaust myself since I also powder coat my oven goes up to the temp to cure it. After I ceramic coated it I then wrapped it with the exhaust wrap. I still need to wrap the actual muffler but that's next anyway. So far temps in the compartment are down and I can pretty much touch anything around my exhaust and its not all that hot.

    Hi guys
Thanks for responding, the aircraft is already build and flying but loss of medical forces the sale but the panel isn't that great so not a big project and it's a good deal. I love flying the avid and have done for 4 years so won't be selling her BUT I have a sports crusier that I don't really fly that much but should do, decisions decisions.

  14. Chris Bolkan added a post in a topic Ceramic coating exhaust

My friend Max has a Rans S-6 with 582. He was encountering exhaust problems in the form of burning/melting the rubber flex mounts for the exhaust and the exhaust being close to cowl and getting super hot. He did the ceramic coating after he saw mine. Temps are greatly reduced and all is fine. They coated inside and out of Y pipe and expansion chamber. Like mine they were only able to coat the outside of the muffler. Still the temp reduction is significant. It's crazy how you can touch the exhaust very shortly after shutdown. Everything runs so much cooler.

    582 engine in a kitfox 4
I have this kitfox Classic IV that came with a 503 Rotax. I removed it and am installing a 582 ROtax. WHen I went to install the cowling I noted the engine is so far aft that the prop will not clear the cowling. I added a 2-1/2" prop spacer and the prop barely clears the cowling. I am thinking I might have to get a different cowling at some point.... Any ideas?????
I point out where the old exhaust was and now you can see the engine is aft of where the cowling was cut to clear the old exhaust...

    Hey northidahoflyer,
looks great. There is just one gauge in your cockpit I would reposition If I were flying your nice bird...I would swap the VSI with your ASI so that when you're landing for example your eyes have a shorter distance to look between outside and the ASI for that quick speed check on very short final..
    Just my 2 cents

Thank you Avid Randy. I like the Belight gauge a lot. It gives you at glance information and has proven to be more accurate than my steam gauge Altimeter. I do not have it hooked to a static port but I do have all the static lines ran in series to a small air filter behind the dash. When I set the B/P on the Altimeter and the Belight the Belight is reads very close to field elevation where the Altimeter is not even close. Joey likes his too. I would recommend it for sure.

  22. Chris Bolkan added a post in a topic Sonex Tail dragger

i have flown in a Sonex a couple of times. Although low wing fast planes are not my thing, they fly like a dream and the controls are so tight and right that it made me smile just to fly it. A real dream to fly and nothing like the Avids fly. If one could have the Sonex control feel in an Avid it would be one very special plane.
And have you ever looked at the Sonex drawings? Absolutely second to none. Light years beyond any other drawing set for an airplane. The thing is ENGINEERED like really engineered and incredibly well documented.
