    Bill,

I would like to hear from those who have flown both wings to get an accurate comparison.

I have never flown the Speedwing, but we flatland flyers don't need the VSTOL that the sandbar and pothole flyers need. A little speed gain is good for longer trips, but maybe cuts down on GW, and is a few mph faster on landings?

My buddy who owns the J3 keeps wanting to do something to slow down his stall speed - I keep telling him that he needs a drag chute to get any slower! It lands slower than the shortwing Pipers, but sure don't cruise as fast.

It would seem that we are screwed. Question is..... what can be done to rectify the situation....?? Guess I am banned already with this line through my text.......

You must have a strange computer - Mine don't know how to put a line thru text.

Banned? I doubt that, since Oh Bummer is not a member on here - He has been badmouthed before on here, but you never know what the Feds can do - I Don't think Leni would do that!

Most of us would probably agree with you anyway.

I think he is the worst since Abe Lincoln who killed 600,000 Americans, and bankrupted the country!

Hi all I'm finishing the construction of a newly acquired avid model c speedwing and I've noticed on this website most say to either extend the wing or go with the HH or STOL wing. Curious why this is? I'm flying out of a 3500' grass runway out of Florida so stol is not needed. Would prefur speed over stol. For those that have flown the standard speedwing what are your thoughts?

    Thanks

    Bill

I don't understand why the dumb ass doesn't just charge a little more tax on stuff like that, then it would be ok to have it. Right? look at Marijuana it was illegal for all those years but if they can tax it, its all the sudden OK. Its all a bunch of BS in my book. Hope they don't take away my rights to own my .308 savage. that's my favorite gun.

Subject: FW: Aviation medical bill before congress 2nd time

There is a bill before congress to eliminate the 3rd class medical for some types of general aviation. Pilots self certify themselves every time that they choose to operate a aircraft. The third class medical for many is a costly and cumbersome requirement that does nothing to improve aviation safety. For a decade now, the Sport Pilot license has been in force, with no medical requirement and it is clear that there is no risk to safety for private pilots flying non commercial flights.

Would you please support this call-to-action from EAA. If you received this and you are not involved in aviation please believe me, the facts support the passage of this bill. Click on the link below it only takes a couple of minutes, Enter your zip code and the site will automatically generate emails to your representatives in the house and senate. It's easy and it's fast.

    Thank you for helping.

I've looked into this one more.... it seems alaska is the only state you can get away with it as far as the faa is concerned aa we have a clause that allows a private pilot to fly fishing and hunting clients. It basically says that the flying part of the fishing or hinting is not a paid service, it is "incidental" to the trip. Your paying for the fishing or hunting part of the trip, the guy is just a nice guy and happens to give you a ride in his plane to gather you there and back. The FAA said that much to their frustration, in alaska, as long as he notifies the clients that the plane they are riding is a home built experimental, the client then assumes the responsibility to say yes or no to the ride. There is nothing they can do about using an experimental plane for flying fishing or hunting clients.

The board of game can yank his guide license for unethical treatment of the clients, fish and game can hit him for wanton waste... but we can use our experimental planes to guide fishing and hunting clients all we want!

I goofed and forgot to plan ahead on my wiring so i just routed it out the side just above where the strut attaches to the fuse and routed it up the rear strut and back to the servo. has worked for about 45 hrs so far with no issues. eventually I will fair them like Joey has done and this will protect the wiring. Structurally its probably fine to drill into the elevator my concern would be that it would allow moisture into the tubing which would cause rust problems over time I would stay away from it. I would recommend opening it all up like Joey has done and extending it while your at it. The fabric work is really easy and if you can't weld it yourself I bet it would not cost much to have a shop weld it up if you prefabed all the tubing. heck if you were near me I would be more than happy to help.

When you get my age, you will know to go buy your wife a new cutting board, if she has a nylon one - Tell her that you are going to recyle the old one, and she will be so happy with you - or buy two, then you take the other one out to your plane!

BTW: After hearing that Oh Bummer was outlawing some .223 ammo, I went to Walmart and bought my wife a new vacuum cleaner, and 200 rounds of ammo. She was so happy!

Ed, seriously where you before with this one. a cutting board!!! thats a lot cheaper than buying raw materials. I wonder if my wife would notice that the cutting board is just a bit shorter hmmm. I should probably check the thrift store first :)

I hard mounted mine by riveting it to the tab welded on the fuselage it clears when folding but not by much, (I have already dinged my flapperons on it grrr) If i were to do it again, and I may redo it, I would use a small hinge to fold it down out of the way when folding the wings. also my kit had aluminum for the bearings I would use some sort of synthetic material.

Nylon, Teflon, Cheap cutting board from wife's kitchen or Walmart - Probably Walmart is safer!

I believe that some have set the straight top where the "U" is, at an angle, so when you swing, it will clear with just a little pressure. Or cut the back part of the top lower. You mount the top of the bearing to match the bottom angle. Hope this makes sense.

Later models did mount this pad on a hinge, and that is how I am doing mine.

Hi guys I'm working on my electric elevator trim. This is a model C and came with no provisions for a trim tab. Since my elevator is already covered I'm adding a trim tab to the rear of the elevator that will be actuated by a servo. My question is since the servo is mounted in the elevator how do I route the servo wires from the elevator into the fuse? Is it alright to drill a hole through the leading edge spar of the elevator? Anybody got a pic of how you routed your wire out of the elevator?

    Thanks

    Bill

On the bottom half of the turtle deck bearing are you guys mounting that on a hinge or something. I don't see how the flaperon horn will release from the bearing when folding the wing  with out pushing up on the bottom of the wing. Hope this makes sense.

If you get around Lawrenceburg, in Lawrence County, TN, it has a nice concrete country strip - my Cousin was running a shop there some years ago covering some WW1 replica birds. Fleeman was his last name.

    Leni,

Here is a photo of my position lights with the strobe modification. Looks like the bulb reads 112V, 60W, and really cant make out the last row, but looks like _E-C? It has a filament, not flash tube. Do Halogen bulbs have filaments?

Anyone know what it might be and what power pack goes with it? I think this might be for the old 500 series Whelen.

I have a back-up plan for some LED strobes for this too.

I am thinking that you are talking about the firewall bushings that the mount bolts to - mild steel bushings and unplated steel washers work just as well as the 4130 bushings, and are easier to ream after welding if you need to do that. Same goes for the bushings and washers on the mount itself - 5/8 OD should be plenty.
