I have a Avid MK IV HH W/ 582 GH.  What are the best speeds and rpm's for downwind, base, and finale.  I have 450 hrs. in C150, and Cherokee 140.

                                                                                                                                                                                     Thanks Russ. N844RS

It's fine for now but eventually the 406 MHZ will become mandatory. A transponder is only required if you are more than 50 miles from your airport i.e. cross country.

Joey - When did this rule start? I never planned on an xponder for uncontrolled flight in lower 48 - What if you don't have electric? OMG - More $$$$

I got caught up in building another plane and was going to sell the Avid, I finally got a ride in a Kitfox that someone had received a LODA on for Taildragger experience, I had flown a Sport Cub and the Kitfox with Speed wing was so much easier to fly that I have decided to finish the Avid I don't know if it will be first but as parts come in for one I will work on it and I will race to finish one or the other.

All I have left to do on the Avid is firewall, rudder pedals (someone took mine) windshield and go through the 582 greyhead it is supposed to only have 75 hours on it but I want to check it out and be sure.

I am finding that building airplanes is addictive but I want to fly one too. I am glad to see that the sight has grown and is still active, I kept getting error messages when I tried to sign on and it finally showed up, I will have a blast building and flying this plane, I will send pictures as soon as I can.

AVid is gone, Buzzard is in the air 15hrs now and you know what is waiting in the shop. The guy that bought the Avid is super happy with it. "Woo Hoo is this a fun airplane" his words. If you are off this week I can fly to Innisfail or North 40 and look at your plane for further insperation.

Track welder, If you want to retain the same blood lines I still have most of the plug I modified from a mk iv cowl to make it fit a revmaster . 3 gallon of bondo and 3 weeks later (maybe 4) it came out OK. It's cut as shown and the bottom intake damaged but could be used again.

I am rebuilding an Avid Model unknown I just know it is not an A, I have made enough changes to it already but I have an ugly hacked up cowl from a side mounted radiator and would like to replace it with either an Avid Mark IV Cowl or the Kitfox radial cowl, if anyone has one even in need of repair I would like to buy it.

I may have enough of the early Kitfox bump cowl to help you - If you don't find a complete cowl set, I can sell you the parts I have and you can get the rest from Kitfox or someone else, or combine my parts with yours to make a set. I know that I am missing the upper part that goes around windshield, but bump part is complete, I think?

Let me know if interested, and I will take some photos and we can talk about price.

Around Iowa, Missouri, and the lower 48, you do not need any lights or xponder for flight in uncontrolled airspace - even a radio is not mandatory.

In Alaska, you need lights any time to be legal - most pilots use their landing lights in the daytime or have them in wig-wag mode - its the "Alaska regulations" that are different than ours.

Don't know a thing about Hawaii, but you probably wont fly to that island.

    Canada is another story.

I am close to being done with my Plane, and was wondering what is required as far as lights on a daytime only VFR that will only fly in uncontrolled airspace. I don't plan on more than my handheld radio, and I would just as soon not spend the money on strobes and transponder, would it be legal for uncontrolled airspace or do I need to add the lights (already own a set) strobe don't have transponder expensive.  I am just trying to get this legal to fly while I finish building my Wittman Buttercup, so I want to use it to practice tailwheel landings and build more hours.

C5 Engineer, I don't know if you are still here or not, but I remember you once posting a new set of rudder pedals for your avid, I am hoping You could send another picture of the way they are set up, I somehow have had my pedals disappear and need to make a new set, I can probably do this on my own, but I would like to have a shot to see how yours were done again. Hydraulic Brakes are going to have to wait, but I have 3 grass fields to land on so I don't need them for anything but taxiing. Hydraulics will come later. I almost sold my Avid, but am Happy I kept it, I just need to do the final 90% new firewall, Rudderpedals and check out the engine internals,

I just took a taildragger lesson in a Kitfox IV and flying from the right hand seat with no brakes I had no problems doing anything but taxiing and run up and taxiing wasn't that big a deal. These land so much easier than a cub even with the speedwing.

Old thread I know, but since I am looking for older information I will add my 2 cents. Look for Carlson Aircraft they sell streamlined aluminum extrusions for struts, I know one being put together with a set he is waiting for the DAR now, I Got side tracked building a Wittman Buttercup and now have hangar space so both airplanes are sitting side by side being bult. I am spending time on both aircraft at once, the Avid will be finished first, I need to make rudder pedals bend a new firewall and freshen up my motor, I took a taildragger lesson in a Kitfox and got bit by the bug again.

My problem is I need a second set of hands to build with, building alone is just a little difficult. I have a whole airport to myself most days and I need a hand once in a while.

I'm new to this forum, and new to Avid HHs too.  I recently bought a MK IV HH that needed some love.  One of the things that had to go was the original tailwheel.  The springs were bent and the tailwheel assembly was junk.  I replaced the entire assembly with this:Avid%20Flyer.jpg

So far, it's had one trip up and down the runway, steers and behaves very well.  Flights will commence after the inspection and upgrades are done, and most importantly, after the brakes are fixed.  The brakes were improperly installed and the pedal geometry is all wrong... but that's a different discussion.

Sharp eyed readers might notice that the new tailwheel assembly looks very much like the one that are commonly seen on Van's RVs.  It is very similar, but not the same.  I figure if the tapered spring worked well on those planes, it should be plenty strong enough for the Avid. (Yes, I understand that something else might bend, but that's why we fly experimentals, eh?)

BTW, it weighs 631# on certified, calibrated scales and has a 582 BH with a Kiev prop.

    Hey Leni,

Can you please post a really good video/picture of your heat set up? Bryce

I have to go out to the hangar tomorrow and I will get more pics of the heat muff.  I just got the MK IV in cowl radiators set up on the plane and they work GREAT!  now to get the air scoop back on so I can have cabin heat again.

I have 2 slots cut in the dash with computer fans mounted under the dash to blow air on the windshield.  With my current set up, I will have air coming into the heat muff preheated by the air from the radiators.

Many Thanks to forum member Jim Peet for sending me this entire magazine. I've scanned the Avid article from Sept of 92. Good stuff!! I love the Alpine tape deck in the panel! If you are having trouble reading the text click on the Plus sign up at the top of the page to Zoom in.
