Not too sure if it's older or newer model but when I weighed the stratus  I included flywheel, cast bracket, pulleys, belt, starter, every nut and bolt and the internal hub that mounts to cam.
Same with the Redrive I'm selling. Included starter and flywheel and bell housing in that weight.
Heres s pic of my stratus Redrive on the old motor before installing the new one

yes good point. I will make the effort today after work to post the info regarding prop flange. The starter does in fact mount on the face as you've pointed out. I'll also attach pictures of the prop flange and also I believe there's a 2 blade Hub.
The total unit including the bell housing and flywheel is a combined weight of 46.25lbs. Just 1.75lbs heavier than my current stratus Redrive.
    Thanks EDMO I'll update tonight.

    Subaru Redrive, PSRU
I purchased a newly rebuilt and complete Subaru EA81 engine that came with a redrive. However this style redrive doesn't fit in my current cowling so I am using my previous one.

  5. fusionfab added a post in a topic Matco cylinder leak?

They're the matco mc-1. They don't leak every conpression just after a few I'll barely here it on both. I'm hoping that they're just too full. But I'll do the small o-ring on the plug also

    Matco cylinder leak?
Hey everyone just looking for some insight on this. I have rerun new lines and fittings on the brakes. Filled with fluid until leaking out the "SHCS" on the top reservoir cover, bled the brakes and they are working nice and solid. However every few depressions of the pedal I'm hearing the slightest of leaks. I look and see that a very small amount is leaking between the shaft and the center collar. Picture attached. I've been looking at the diagram and there doesn't seem to be a seal at this location inside the reservoir just the outer o-ring. Would this indicate something is worn? Or too much fluid in the reservoir? It's doing this identically on both cylinders.
    Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Sorry Knuckledragger, yes I am going to install the piano hinge on both sides of the cowl so I can remove the top half. Give that a go. Ive ordered the hinges from ACS an just waiting on them now. I will for sure post pictures of the progress and hopefully all works out.

Okay thanks everyone. I have decided to give the piano hinge along the sides a go. Then will install the aluminum back plates and cam locks for the vertical sections near prop hub. Again thanks and I will post pics with the progress. Hopefully successful progress

Ed and Jim thanks. I just located an old brass piano hinge here and basically placed it alongside the cowling. I now follow what you two are saying and I must say, I like it. I saved a bunch of cam locks from the old tin cowling. All different depths but theres enough to work with. Probably  a cam lock on each vertical beside the prop hub where the cowl meets I'm guessing? Now would the best method for mounting the piano hinges be to rivet them in place or another way?
    Thanks again guys

Hey Jim I'm sorry I should have mentioned that this is for an Avid MK4 and They are the long runs. Its the whole cowling just upper and lower half. There isn't that third section so it would just be the two horizontal seams. I'm tying to wrap my head around the piano hinge and how that works. How would that work for removing? You just out the front pull the entire pin right out? Is it riveted in? fibreglassed in?

    Mounting the new Cowling
The plane came with a makeshift cowling that I have replaced with a new fibreglass cowling. However I am looking for different methods to install it. The lower half is already mounted but how about the top half to the lower half? Any Ideas? I though of running a strip of sheet on the inside riveted in place to the lower half and then fastener installed on it for the upper half to mount to.

Oh awesome thanks guys. Are you suggesting two small ones up front? A narrow long one underneath? I really like the looks of those

    Soob radiator setup
Well I've got the rad and exhaust off to redo on my EA81. The exhaust I'll be using 1-3/4" stainless straight pipes with a crossover tube behind oil pan.
The radiator I have no clue. The avid came with a small but heavy rad mounted underneath like a Mack truck. I also have a vw rabbit rad but am wondering about other options? I'd like to mount under the belly slanted as many do but am curious if other types of rads may work? Or if there's a specific size to aim for?
    Thanks
    Matt

  16. fusionfab added a post in a topic My new and first plane

Well I decided that for now I'll reinstall the stock gear but eventually fabricate a new wider set, strengthen the truss and go from there. This being my first plane and will start flying it with an experienced TD pilot I decided to leave stock in case for some odd reason I end up selling. So with that said I was wondering with the ea81 avids how are the aircraft owners doing there bungees? I bought 20 feet of 3/8 bungee but just wondeing if I stick with the stock setup? The ones I removed were 1/2 and about 90" long and wrapped 7 times. However he had also wrapped 5/16 around a couple times on top of that. That's all removed now.

Suberavid - ahh I wish I had read your post earlier haha. I just removed the landing gear and hardware last night, cleaned, prepped and painted. I actually was pondering the idea of building/modifying the current set for wider but wasn't sure how positive of an upgrade it'd be. So you're saying that it's a modification I should do? Because I can still always start on them while everything is off.

Yes I've already arranged it with someone who's been flying them for years. We will just start on my plane as his is an aerobatic single seater. But until then I'll make the mods suggested by everyone here. I appreciate the help

166nflyer- I'm having a difficult seeing those pictures, and am pretty Interested. If you can email them to me that would be great
    fusion_fabrication@yahoo.ca
I'm yet to fly a tail dragger so any and all modifications to make it easier for a newbie I'm interested in.

Suberavid - thanks for the comment. I've looked at your plane a number of times I love it. I'm just doing my door outer skins and glass now and was looking at the overlapping piece you have on yours. Is that .050 aluminum or thinner?

Also with regards to the earlier comment about the castering in the rear. Can I replace the springs with two small tie rod arms instead to lock the wheel in place?

Yeah the new engine I have has has all the machine work and electronic done to it with receipts from earlier this year. Just has the larger 2 bbl on it. I will dig a bit more to find out about where the dual carb motor came from

    ****update****
Just got an email back from the gentleman who helped the elderly man sell me the plane. He spoke to the original owner and stated that he purchased the engine from stratus a few years ago, paid over $8k, the carbs and air filters came with the engine.

I've pondered the idea of using the new engine I have with the single carb and intake. Any thoughts?

Oh the New Mexico thing was for some reason what was in my head. I'm not sure where it was but that rings a bell. I remember for sure that he said he paid $8000 for it a few years back and never got it running correctly since day one. Which I'm convinced after the carb work and correct throttle connection that it's running at full potential now. Someone I know has a portable engine dyno so I may bother him to do his magic.
Still lots of little things to do to make her pretty again and everythjng mechanically and structurally checked over. Additionally the modifications everyone is suggesting which I appreciate 100%
Going to look for that exhaust also

Ed you don't think the one on the plane is a stratus? I'm not certain but after the carbs were done and the new throttle it runs really nicely. So far...I'm happy with it. Just going to look into changing rad setup as previous suggested and also something different with a stainless exhaust.

Should I wait and see after the cowling is on for an induction purpose regarding the carbs? I've seen a few setup like this and this is the first I've heard of the issue. What about a central airbox that leads to the carbs, think that would work? The room available is pretty damn snug.
    The story behind this engine:
Previous owner bought this completely rebuilt and setup for aircraft from a company in New Mexico?
Had it installed but could never get running well. Was always gutless and wouldn't rev up
So he got frustrated dealing with the supplier and it sat for some time.
I bought it, but before I found this plane I bought a rebuilt ea81 with the single carb. Picture attached
I did te compression tests, leakdown tests, everything to the engine in the plane and all was perfect. Figured out carbs were a disaster, worst I'd ever seen in any engine. So cleaned them up and rebuilt them.
Then ran much much better. Was putting out much more power, running kinda smooth, but otherwise running as it should.
Was popping a bit and vibrating, followed throttle back and the connections were setup vertically and pulling at different amounts, so carbs not synced..pictured
I changed the throttle from a dual cable to a splitter and a single cable to the control and is all synced up now
