  3. gregpro50 added a post in a topic My latest excuse for not having time to work on the plane.

I bought that forklift about 10 years ago.  It's a Skytrak 4270H that was an ex-rental unit from Admar.  It comes in real handy for jobs like this where you might lift something once a day or so but not use it enough to justify renting one.  I think I paid about $20k for it back then but it's paid for itself a couple times since I bought it.  Other than some minor issues and maintenance it's been a great machine for me.  The enclosed heated cab is sure nice in the winter too.

Actually I'm adding on to both sides.  the right side is a master bedroom and bath and the left side is a living room.  There will be a two car garage under both sides but the right side will have the existing garage with it too.  The wife gets the left side garage and I get the right.
I'm starting the work when the weather gets bad because that's when my guys and equipment become available because our other work slows down.  I own a home improvement company so we're building it ourselves .
I've been in the house 15 years and we originally bought it as a starter home.  3 kids later and now the house is too small.  We don't want to change school districts and nothing else ever comes up for sale out here so I had to bite the bullet.

My latest excuse for not having time to work on the plane.
I'm adding an addition to both sides of the house.  You can see the plane peeking out of the one car garage I was working out of.  It sure will be nice to have some extra space to work with.

It can drop a half of a keeper and still run.  The other half can still hold the valve.  It really looks like a keeper to me.

Looks like a valve keeper to me.
Check to see which valve is missing one.

I rode in a KF IV with a 503 and had the same experience.  I think we were only getting about 250fpm climb.  I'm a bigger guy at 6' 225 lbs and yes the cockpit is cozy with anyone else close to average size.  I'm doing the wide body mod on mine now and I'm hoping the extra shoulder room will make it a little more comfortable.

I verified it with someone that had a model IV and it is the exact same measurement that you gave.  That is good to know.
I've got one side all done and fitted and now I'm going to copy everything over and get the other side done.  Then I'll make sure everything is square and finish weld it.

Thanks for your help.  I'll take a look and see if that makes sense.  That is the only tube where I got a good kink in both sides where I can't get an accurate measurement by myself to replace them.

  12. gregpro50 added a post in a topic New plane to fly while I finish mine.

Flight school $115 hr wet.  For comparison the 172s there are $120.  I think the purchase price is up around there somewhere.  It has the full Dynon Skyview glass panel setup.  I just flew it a couple hours this morning and I'm impressed with it.  It is a very easy plane to fly and land.  It touches down like a butterfly with sore feet.  Lots of room and very comfortable.  I'm going to finish up my sport training on it while I finish rebuilding my kitfox.

New plane to fly while I finish mine.
My friend and local flight instructor got a new plane that I can fly while I finish mine.  A brand new Evektor Sport Star.  It's a very impressive plane but out of my budget to buy.

+1 on the bench grinder.  I tried a tubing notcher but found the bench grinder to be so much easier.

I'm going.  I'll be dragging my camper.  This will be my first time.  I need to get a bunch of parts to put mine back together.  I plan on spending money like a drunken sailor.

  19. gregpro50 added a post in a topic Fuselage measurements and dimensions drawing?

I'm starting to get everything squared up.  The 1/2" tubing is .035" wall correct?  Is there any benefit to using tubing with a thicker wall where the gear mounts are?  Also, there is a spot where I need to splice the tubing and to do that I need to put another tube inside the 1/2" tube with rosette welds and then the splice.  What size tubing should I put inside the 1/2" tube and what wall thickness should that be?

I gave him a call to talk about the replacement fuselage and the cost was just more than I could justify spending.  He was very helpful though.  I never did ask him about a partial but really the more I look at it this will be easy for me to fabricate on my own and I even see opportunities to make some structural improvements.  Right now I'm in the process of fabricating a jig to mount the fuselage on so I can get everything square.  I cobbed together a rolling dolly out of an old pallet in the meantime just to get it mobile in the hangar.  Once that happens it's just basically filling in tubing.  I had the local metal supplier cut some pieces of angle iron for me which I am welding together to get a rolling jig.  I have to buy a tubing notcher that does tubing this small.  The one that I have is for large tubing in race cars.
There are a couple different alloy options for the welding wire used for 4130 which I am researching but ER80S-D2 looks like the best one.  I see how the factory welds the fuselage and they controlled the heat with the welds by trigger pulsing.  I'm surprised that MIG seems to be a dirty word when welding 4130 but yet there are all kinds of manufacturers that do it.
I'll post more pictures as I make headway with this.

I know it.  If I had another fuselage sitting next to mine I could use to make a jig from it would be easy.  One of my hobbies was repairing salvage cars and once you got it on the frame machine it was easy to see where it had to be because there are published frame measurement diagrams.  There aren't any for these without making your own.  It would be easy for me just to replace the damaged tubes but I don't want to weld them in if there is a twist somewhere.  I want to get all measurements verified before I start welding.  The frames for these really aren't that complicated.
I think what I am going to do is make a drawing of the structure and the measurements needed and ask if people can help get the measurements.

I'll get some good pictures posted soon.  I disassembled everything over the weekend to get to the repair areas.
I know the factory MIG welds these instead of TIG.  I have a MIG welder and have worked with 4130 before.  Mostly in making cages for race cars.  I would be comfortable welding in new tubing.  Really the most difficult thing is getting the welder dialed into what you are welding.  There are FAA published guidelines for tubing repair.

I'll buy beer for anyone who can bring it to me...
Is there a member down that way who can take a look at it?  It looks really really neglected.  I'd want to take a real good look at everything before I commit.
I could probably fly down and stuff it in the back of a Uhaul and drive back.
Help me out guys.  I want to get back in the air again.
