That looks like a great deal.  $400 for an installed mode C setup can't be beat.
How hard was the install?  I assume the transponder is just power and ground, and then wiring the encoder to the transponder, and splicing into the static port.
I also really like your Samsung tablet there.

It depends what it is really.  An old KT-76A would still do what it needs to do as long as it still works.  If it doesn't there are better options than dumping money into repairing one.  Wiring harnesses are still readily available.

Dig it out and throw it in that box and I'll have it tested for you.

I was looking at those but they're pretty pricey.  Impressive though.
Have you looked at the TRIG TT-21 compact transponders?  They are supposed to be ADS-B out capable.

I think this post is about me.  I just bought a plane from a member here that is very well equipped but doesn't have a transponder.  I live under class D airspace and would fly through other areas of class D airspace quite often.  Now technically class D doesn't require transponders to enter their airspace and they will let you in but drive you nuts every 5 minutes asking for a position report.  I also would like to use this plane for some cross-country trips and sometimes it's nice to have an extra set of eyes from flight following to help you out.

So that being said I'm looking for a mode C transponder to install with an encoder.  At this point I'm not too concerned about the ADS-B requirement.  So I'm trying to figure out what is a good transponder to look for.  A used KT-76A seems to be readily available for under $500 and an encoder can be had for $150 or so.  I know from past use that this particular transponder likes a warm up time before use though. Maybe I should bite the bullet and go for a Garmin GTX 327?  Or should I really be concerned about ADS-B and get one that has ADS-B out?

I don't exactly have more money than I know what to do with but for me I do look at a transponder as a safety item and wouldn't mind spending a little to get a good one.  I'm just not sure of what to look for.

I'm a moderator on a car forum and we experience the exact same thing.  Whether it's cars, planes, or a knitting forum, people are the same.

Here is a picture of the Varmint.  This boat will just pass 90mph but scares me to death.  I'm actually looking to sell this thing before it kills me.

It has a Mercury Racing 250xs with a sport master lower on it that was rigged when it was new in 2005.  I've been nothing but impressed with the motor.  Zero issues in 10-years.  Nothing.  Just basic maintenance.  Excellent fuel economy as well.  I just can't believe how little fuel this thing burns compared to my other Hydrostream with a 2.4 200 on it.  After I got the boat I kept saying that when the motor dies I'll put a 300XS on it but the motor still runs like new after 10 years.  I'm sold on these opti's.
I've always been a Hydrostream guy but those Allisons are sexy boats.  I wish they made a bowrider version since I've got a pile of kids.  I've had my eye out for an XB2003 to fish from.  I'm fishing from an old Hydrostream Varmint now and there just isn't enough room.
This Voyager is a great all around boat though.  It's comfortable and has plenty of room.  Its good in choppy water too.

    I do.  I've got a Hydrostream Voyager.
    Best speed of 92.2.

Interesting that they will only insure a max takeoff weight of 1150 or less.  My 1200 wouldn't work.

I got several quotes through different brokerages and they all came back to Falcon so I ended up going with Falcon through EAA.
My quote from Falcon was as follows:

$1,382 for ground and flight ($30k agreed value)

$603 aircraft liability ($1,000,000) and medical expense ($20,000)

    $1,985 total policy premium.

A stipulation is that I must be under direct CFI supervision on all flights as a student pilot. Must receive 10 hours of dual flight instruction to include 10 full stop landings and obtain TW endorsement in make and model prior to solo.

As an interesting side note, if the aircraft had any other engine than a 912 they were not interested in insuring me and to bind the insurance the make and model of the installed engine in the aircraft must be documented and approved by the underwriter.  They will not insure auto engines.  I wonder if a 582 would count as an aircraft engine to them?

Same guy.  I think I met you at the romp a few years ago.  You had the Vking with the bruiser color scheme if I remember.  I still have my Voyager but I thinned my herd of other boats to pursue this interest.
Actually my end goal is to have this plane on floats and operate it out of Raquette in the summer which would be central Adirondacks.

I'm certainly going to take good care of it.  I've had my eye out for the right one for a few years now.
I grew up in the co-pilot seat of a pressurized Cessna Centurion.  My father would fly quite a bit for business and I would tag along.  He ended up selling the plane about 20 years ago due to medical issues and I've missed flying ever since.
I decided to start flying about 5 years ago thinking I would go the private pilot route.  I just didn't realize how expensive it was going to be.  It wasn't much fun at $110 an hour plus instructor costs.
I decided I would go the light sport route to get in the air but there are no LSA planes around here to rent so I started looking for one.  My instructor mentioned a kitfox and there is another gentleman around here that had a couple model IVs that was nice enough to let me fly with him.  I fell in love with the plane and started keeping my eye out for the right one.
    So here I am now...

At least it didn't go far.  I'll allow you visitation if you'd like.
I really do appreciate your help with everything and I'm looking forward to participating more on the forums as I get to know this new lady in my life.
It was certainly an interesting ride home.  I thought it was going to cause an accident with all the people slowing down to take pictures of it.
