JustNorm, thanks for the tips on Latex paint. What is the name of that yellow color, and how do I get exactly that color from my Lowe's?  Thanks!

I used Home Depot digital color matching system to match the 25 year old blue trim on my Avid, they mixed up a batch and it was so close when dry that I cant quite tell which is patch and which is old stuff.

Those "wings" are the tabs on the tail wheel release mechanism that trigger the release of the centering lock. The normal Matco wings release at 41 degrees of rudder, which is too much for an Avid, so the tabs don't unlock the tail wheel; consistently.  The 23 degree tabs or wings release the TW when you put a boot full of rudder in. Attached is the Matco print that describes it all. The 23 deg tabs are about $15 if I recall. The tabs can be modified with a grinder to any angle, I think.

  4. nlappos added a post in a topic How best to descend

Descent is easy, just slow to below 70, pull the throttle back to about 4500 rpm, let a descent start and then lower the nose to accelerate to 75 or 80. At half throttle, the EGT does not rise, and the descent is a sporty one. To stop the descent, first get the speed back to below 70, then advance the throttle. Your thermostat should take care of water temp.

  5. nlappos added a post in a topic Tail Wheel Swap to a Matco Pneumatic 8"

The 25 deg wings are important, the 45s will not release consistently. I know about drilling spring steel, I used the same bit and resharpened it about 5 times! I switched to a double spring last year, and find it perfect now. The double spring stops 1" short of the Tail Wheel, I used a steel bolted clamp to hold everything in alignment, seems to work well.

Doubleclutch, This is a post for a 582 FWF in another thread. Saves a lot of work. Not sure how well the mount will go in an A model.

Jim, That hole exposes the magneto flywheel and damper for inspection. The parts diagram doesn't show any plug for it.

to help manage CG, here is an excel file that calculates it, thanks to Joey. You can put various engines in various places if you're handy with excel. It is set up for a mark IV right now.

A Rotax 670 has 91 hp, and weighs about 10 to 15 pounds more than a 582 (including a belly radiator), fits in the same mount and drops in easily. Also, the Rotax Rick zero time 670 is about $3600 with a used 582 as a core to Rick.
My 670 works like a charm, and really moves my Mk IV.

  13. nlappos added a post in a topic Avid MK4 braking effect

For my single caliper Avid MKIV, I tried everything, even the power re-fill systems that blast clean fluid up from the calipers to the reservior. The ONLY thing that works for me, and it really works, is grandpa's old fashioned tube in the glass jar method, were the tube, pushed over the bleed fitting, is under fluid in a jar. Then you open the bleed while pushing on the brakes and the bubbles come out. It works well, costs nothing, and gets the brakes to feel solid.
I think is works best because the air-trapping corners in the claiper as best cleaned out that way.

The main gear itself comes aft, so it will shift the empty CG aft a bit (but not very much since the arm is so short).

cost, yes. The single is about $270 list and the double is over $480, as well the single is lighter (a big deal when the aft CG component is accounted for). My pneumatic tail tire is swell, and the extra couple of hundred bought a transponder (on eBay!)

Check this Rotax Installation manual out, page 18-4 and 18-5:  https://m.cps-parts.com/cps/pdf/d00287.pdf
Basically 170 watts at 6000 rpm, or a 16 amp fuse at 12 V DC. The rectifier is very efficient, so AC Watts = DC Watts

A new double spring is a great answer. Try Wassau Spring, they are responsive and have done several of ours. Just search on this site for their info.
while at it, I recommend the pneumatic 8” Matco single arm tail wheel over your Maul. Smoother landings and no noise taxiing.

  20. nlappos added a post in a topic Tinted 0.060 4x8 Lexan Sheet $50

branded Macralon, marked by the manufacturer, is unknown? I can read, I'll send you a link to the alphabet, so you can figure it out. And it is abrasion resistant, vs the regular that you list, at a fair price. I have no idea why some folks think Ebay is a pejorative. Half my plane comes from Ebay.

I contacted the guy in the ebay ad listed above, he said he could provide a 48x60 piece of 1/16" abrasion resistant polycarbonate for $210. I think I will trigger that in the spring to do my windshield.

  22. nlappos added a post in a topic Tinted 0.060 4x8 Lexan Sheet $50

I have found the specs for the polycarbonate materials, and I think they each have several variants for different applications, including abrasion resistance and non-static electric. Otherwise, I bet the various brands are virtually identical.
The abrasion resistant types are priced high, they seem to go for over $300 per 4x8 sheet, while most sources sell plain vanilla poly for about $50 a sheet. I am doing my windshield in the spring, I think I will buy a half sheet of the abrasion resistant stuff. I can provide the links I found if anyone is interested.

  23. nlappos added a post in a topic Tinted 0.060 4x8 Lexan Sheet $50

After some on line searching, I see that the Makrolon is just a brand name for a Bayer polycarbonate, the Lexan is the brand name for a Saudi company that makes their brand of polycarbonate. Both make "abrasion resistant" versions. I will try to find some on the web.

  25. nlappos added a post in a topic Hangar size

Easy way to see is to make a scale model "bird farm" with an outline of the hangar and a scaled cut-out shape of each airplane. With a 30' span, high wing. 20' long Avid, and another 24' span high wing that is 13 feet long I bet they will not fit in a 36' without a lot of shuffling. But the bird farm will tell you. Good Luck!
