  1. Just thought I would add a comment now with some serious abuse and almost 800 hrs my repairs are well proven and I can recommend this for repair of the ribs.

after making the repairs, how do you get the fabric tight again.

I cut mine about 6 inches down the center of the rib .

Im thinking of stitching the fabric around the rib as there are no holes in the rib.

    What do you think?

    thanks

  4. Hi,

I own an Avid Flyer Speed-wing Model , Mark 4 and I want to be sure I'm putting the nose wheel back together properly.

I recently had to remove the nose wheel and fork with tube to do some repairs.  Today I slid the nose wheel tube back up into the bigger tube attached to the frame of the aircraft. I place the collar bushing up and pin at the bottom and placed the "V" shaped cap on top.  With the front wheel lifted off th ground I attached the left and right centering springs.  When pushed the wheel returns to a straight ahead position. I then place the bolt through the end of the steering tube and through the V shaped cap.  I then ran the tie rod with turnbuckles to the right seat left petal with the pedals and rudder centered and inserted the bolt.  With everything reassembled and the aircraft front end off the ground I moved the left the right pedals.  The nose wheel seemed inclined to turn left but not so much right?  Why?  It seems strange to hang a mechanical linkage to only the left pedal?  What brings the nose wheel right?

This aircraft was taxiing and turning fine prior to the repair and my disassembly.

The Avid Manual does not really discuss any rigging.

Is the nose wheel supposed to be rigged so the springs return it to a straight ahead position? In line with the aircraft centerline?

Should I rig the return springs a certain way?

Did I put the tie rod in wrong?

Do I need to add a tie rod to the left seat right pedal?

Steve,  message me with your phone # and I will send you pics of how I rigged my nose wheel steering. works great.  You are almost there!  jim @ 404-409-5308

Eager to hear what you guys have to say :)

  5. Does anyone know anything about the Ellison throttle body ??

I understand they have discontinued the efs2 for the 582.

    Did this work?

Would appreciate any info about this product.

    Thanks

    Jim

  6. Jim,

Yes, you are correct that ACs are not mandatory, but it is an explanation to FAR-45, which is the regulation for markings.

I cant remember which plane put it under the tail on the fuselage - may have been a Maule? - but the inspector would have to crawl under the taildragger plane to read it - and it did comply with the regulations.

I also think you are correct that it is supposed to be on the left side (pilot's side), although that one was in the center.

    EdMO

My DAR said to put mine inside the cockpit behind the pilot. (left side)  So it could be seen without opening the door.

Just what I was told.  Don't know if he wrote it down anywhere.

    My 2 cents.

    Jim

  7. James,

there are, as you can read in this string, 2 schools... "Always open vent" or "Open vent only to vent out the excess air, then close it", pros and cons (based on sometimes conflicting theories) has been discussed at length.

I suggest you read all the mails (i.e. not only my mails and theory - that might be in minority...) . The way I see it is that an open vent is is a way for air not only to escape (that is what we want) but also to enter (and we do not want that). The comment from Gfry is also correct, fuel can get succeed out through the vent line (this is normally easy to detect as your canopy get white and crack almost instantly...)...

And I do have some thoughts about "both tanks to a tee"...

Thanks for your answer.  I flew today with the vent closed. Had no problems and no fuel vented and sprayed out.

Would like to hear your thoughts about both tanks to a tee.

    Thanks Again

    Jim

  8. Uh... We just talked about this in another string... Were you using a header tank with open vent?

I had forgotten how small the original "behind the seat" header tanks were... If that is what you had (with an open vent) an additional pump would not have helped as with reduced, or no, flow from the main tank the header tank would have filled up with air from the vent anyway. Never leave the header tank vent open!

Please explain "never leave the header tank vent open".

I just built a mk iv and trying to learn all i can about operations.

I ran both tanks to a tee and then to the header tank.

Then I ran a vent line up and out of the aircraft.

    Thanks in advance.

  9. Hi Jared, im using the 3 blade 72" warp drive, the same prop that was on my soob and it seems fine, I don't have anything else to compare it to though so once I hear more on these Luga props  i'll  see if its worth the upgrade :BC:

    Marshawk,

What degree pitch are you set ?.  What is degree of your prop hub ?

What rpm's static are you turning and takeoff and cruise rpm's.

My reason for asking I'm tweaking my MK IV and looking for starting points.

I also have the 3 blade 72 in taper tip prop from Warp Drive.

What is empty weight of your aircraft?

    Thanks in Advance.

    Jim

  10. James,  After you type what you want for a post, scroll down and you will see "choose files" you can click on that and then open any photo on your computer and it will load them to the post in a few seconds - you can do this as many times as you want to - then submit post with photos.    I don't know anything about photos on a phone.  EDMO

    Thanks EDMO

  11. It works the same way on a phone too.

Just bought a kit or I would've had an interest in yours.  Did your original kit come with the nose gear mount or did you fabricate something to work?  Curious as I'm looking at doing something to possibly add nose gear.  (Ed your not alone! :)) Randy

Nose gear mounting tube was in , all I had to do was fabricate a tube with a fork for the tire and wheel.

What kit did you buy. just being nosy.lol plus added steering to rudder pedal.

    1. When I figure out how to post the pics , will do. until then if interested call or pm me and I will send pics to you.

Not out of phase 1 yet.

To change back to tail dragger, just remove grove gear, install original main gear and bolt on tailwheel. remove nose gear.

The trailer is a converted boat trailer. load aircraft tail forward, secure it and drive off.

the phone is from Atlanta area, but I now reside in Ocala, Fl

    useful load 539

    engine has 19 hours.

  13. Nope just the system itself . All I did with mine was remove the tank ,cable and hoses . I left my injection in because of it being a pain in the ass because of the position.

I too removed the oil injection, lines, pump and gear.

fabricated a block off plate. took about 2 hours, but I'm slow.

rotax rick suggested to remove everything.

    Jim

  14. With a 3 blade 72" Warp, you may have to much prop on the plane.   What did Darrell from Warp drive have to say about it?  I had a 3 blade 70" warp on the front of an Avid, 582 with 3 - 1gearbox, and I had the impression it was almost to much prop.  If you have to flatten out the blades to much to get to your intended RPM, at some point, all the blades are doing is making mostly drag, and not much pull.   JImChuk

per daryl at warp drive, this is the prop I needed.

Have since flown 2 hours, much better performance.. seems like airspeed indicator is off about 10 mph, replaced it and still the same. now to check out pitot/static system.

    Suggestions appreciated.
