  1. bcbushcaddy added a post in a topic VGs? Who has them and do you like them?

    Hello Maddin,
This is a 2 person job, so bring a helper.
Place a Drywall square/Carpentry Square (with extension) on the bottom of the wing (long side) and up tight against the leading edge (short side). Measure parallel to the bottom edge the proper distance. If I recall the VG placement is 8% - 12% (?) of cord, in your case 8.3cm to the front edge of the front VG's and 12.5cm to the rear edge of the rear VG's. That's how we placed them on the Kitfox 4.
String 2 lines, use black sewing thread and tape in place. Make sure you do this inside and the string is very tight. Place your VG's in the proper Guide Paper and alternate every 4 VG's. Dont be afraid to press down on the VG's when you glue them and make sure its not too cold out either.
Do a test flight prior and note your temperature, speeds, rpm's, climb rates, etc. Place the wing VG's first and fly the aircraft and note the new parameters. We are looking forward to the report. Tails section VG's; Describe the problem and why to you need them? I remain fully convinced on the 701 Tail VG's but dont think the Kitfox 4 needs them. Like mentioned in a previous post, it all comes down to CofG, Center of Lift on the wing, load distribution, engine weights, H-stabilizer settings, and the list goes on. In either case only do one upgrade at the time and note the differences.
If you have any doubt with the enclosed please refer back to the original VG instructions for your aircraft, as "staggering" is an unproven installation of VG's. We can only second the experience as encountered by a previous Kitfox 4 owner for the staggered installation and neither discourage nor encourage any such attempts on similar or different airfoils/aircraft.

Subject to temperature the manual says 15 minutes between the Poly-Brush and Morning to Afternoon for the silver Poly-Spray. Best I could find...

    Hi Guys,
We have installed about six sets of VG's with varying results. I agree wholeheartedly with the statement ...it depends what you are looking for. PLACEMENT: Last set went onto a Kitfox 4 in a Stagger Fashion and it yielded the best improvements yet. Photos and a little write up in the KF4 section of this forum. Thinking why they worked better in stagger is probably the fact that 50% are fore and the other 50% are aft, hence as the wing angles the effect is in a broader range of effectiveness. Just my guess, but about the only way I can explain the stagger findings (1) vs the straight (5) installations.
I'd be tempted on the next set to go with the stagger again, this time put the front edge of the VG near the front% of cord and the tail edge of the rear ones near the aft% of cord as recommended. Flaperons don't count as part of the wing. Last I looked they seemed like control surfaces to me.
Lessons learned; Unless someone has the pretty much the exact same bird, W&B, rigged the same the results will vary from plane to plane even on the same type, model. That much we figured by now. Looking forward to hear about your findings...

    Congratulations Scott!
Proud to announce that there is another bonafide "Kitfox - Flyer" amongst the crowd. Scott P. completed his Canadian ULPP here recently with us and is the proud owner of this beautiful Kitfox 4-1200.
After a few years absence from giving instructions/training in a Kitfox I almost (..NOT!!) forgot how much fun they are.
Safe Journey's Scott and post a few cool landing sites from the northern Rockies!

Here is another link to the instructions that we used. Didn't bring a drywall square that would have been real handy on the bottom of the wing. Saved by the iPhone but almost turned into a 2 person 5 handed job to get exact to the mm.

    STOLspeed VG's on Kifox 4 - 1200
    Hello all,
Just installed some STOLspeed VG's on a Kitfox 4 - 1200 powered by a 912UL and here are some non-scientific numbers that we noted. This is the 4th or 5th set of STOLspeed VG's that we have installed on various aircraft, all with slightly different results, all with mainly positive results. First off, on this one we did the staggered installation which was new to us but since it was tried before we felt lets run with it, especially since it is listed on the STOLspeed webpage under Kitfox. We went as close as possible with the installation instructions as provided on the webpage and here is what changed; All test's flown dual occupancy, app. half fuel at 3000' ASL runway and 4000' ASL circuit elevation, standard day.
Climb increase 200'/min from 500' to 700'        Cruise increase 3 to 5 mph     approach speed drop (solid feel) by almost 10mph  - unable to power off stall the aircraft with stick all the way back from cruise flight configuration, merely nose nodding at below 40mph through a 5mph up and down motion. WOW!!!
...and than we put on the Horizontal Stabilizer VG's at 30mm intervals and taped the hinge.
Lets just say that there was a speed drop in cruise, a heavier feel to the aft stick once flaps are set untrimmed and little to no "positive" change in flare, except maybe a bit of over flare if you were not ever so gentle in your round out and/or deceleration phase. Not sure if I like them or not. Felt good without them and in my opinion taping the hinge, if you really must, probably is all you need. I'd take the faster cruise speed over an over flare on landing, thank you very much, all I am looking for is a nice three point attitude that is holding right until touch down. Maybe a 60mm spacing might be better, in either case more testing is needed. Maybe with a heavier engine up front like a Subie or big Jabi, they may make a bit more difference, but with the 80hp Rotax and the Moment Arm at 12.32 I don't feel they are that much an improvement. Just our experience and two bits.

  7. bcbushcaddy added a post in a topic Avid MK4 Wing Strut Inspection

Let me elaborate a little to Willis' post...
There was no obvious signs of any corrosion other than a few small specks around the very top and Jury strut brackets while they were sealed in the fabric. It was the slight separation of the wood (and a hunch) that lead to this inspection. There was also no discolouration of the fabric on the outside. However there is discolouration present in the wood, see center photo, for almost 2' down the tube. There is little rust on the top covered 1" where it is able to dry out, through the crack, mind you. The issue arises further down where the water collects and remains for periods of time. The top 2' of the wood filler was no longer "glued" to the strut but had separated with copious amounts of rust. Punch tests along the rear center line in 1" increments did not lead to any protrusions, ...as of yet! Not sure how much longer the tooth of time could gnaw away before failures would occur?
I have just checked the Kitfox's webpage for SB's  http://www.kitfoxaircraft.com/index.php/service-bulletin  but could not find any. Maybe I've missed it or possibly misread it? Needless to say AVID will no longer issue any, so it is up to the community to raise the awareness to this fact. I am certain that your garage kept aircraft in Tonopah NV will most likely be fine, but I am also certain that your parked/tied down Vancouver Island bird will show the same thing. Well, how much rust is reasonable? I don't want to answer that one, but how about none as a start to the conversation.
In either case I highly recommend an inspection, some of these aircrafts are now 30 - 40 years old and having looked at a lot of PA-18s, 20's, 22's Citabria's and you name it, it's not uncommon to find hidden rust. The ultimate call is yours as the owner, pilot and mechanic.

BIG THANKS for the heads up on the structural integrity! I guess we'll be exploring a few "strutting" options on this one. Don't see the point on re-doing it the same way. Certainly going to have to take a look a Leni's upgrades.

OOPS - dont return the cooling line (right hand side) into the Thermo-Switch port as this will only give you half the radiator. Use both outlets and cap the Switch Port or alternately use it in conjunction with a radiator fan.

    Subaru EA81
    Hello all,
    Not sure if I am posting this twice - just lost my sat momentarily and killed the previous post. In either case here it is again. Couple of pics below of our Subaru EA81 engine and re-drive set up. Only started flying it so too early for me to answer to many specific questions but this is what was done to the engine to modify it. Stratus profiled Cam (no longer available as far as I know, but use local engine shop), higher compression, flowed heads (flow charts to follow), stock ignition, 38 amp after-market alternator, VW Jetta radiator with stock pump and pulley regulated by 16psi cap with 190F thermostat;
cooling works well, PCV return (right side of re-drive) line will be changed up slightly, air filter - may go bigger, wondering if it leans me a bit too much at high power settings?, electrics - simple is good and same for ignition, points are cheap..., TBI-40 works well, but it is finicki in downdraft mode,  ...and a little glimpse of the other side of the firewall. We will try to post a few more inputs as we get them over the next little while testing this set up here. If you have questions of a similar installation with the TBI, but gear driven than Willis (Marshawk) can probably give you more feedback than "moi", ..as I am only getting started flying it and testing it.

  13. bcbushcaddy added a post in a topic Brake lines

Just a heads up that on the brake lines, ...not all lines are the same, ..got some from Aircraft Spruce Canada and had a few problems sealing them and finally busting a line twice. Decided the go to Matco directly and ended up replacing the lines on two aircraft thus far, a Merlin GT and our BushCaddy. To the best of my knowledge you cant get the plastic ferrule separately from the the nut and they are about 2 bucks a piece and a one time use. I went with 1/4" x 035 line all around. Matco also recommends that you place the nut/ferrule assembly first on the fitting, getting it hand tight and than place the line and give the nut  only one more turn with a (7/16) wrench. That worked on some, but not all fittings and I ended up re-tightening most of them.

    Avid MK4 Wing Strut Inspection
    Hello,
So here we, Willis and me, have started removing the wings to upgrade them with extensions, new fabric and some minor repairs. Upon pulling the struts from the wing attach fittings I noticed a minor gap between the wood fairing (rear) and 4130 pipe (front) that forms the strut. Just wondering if anyone has ever encountered any moisture and/or rust issues in this area or has anyone ever removed the fairing, I know its glued, to inspect for possible corrosion. Those struts are now 20 to 30 years old, ..just wondering.

Felt I expired my guest privileges by now...
and after many visits as such decided to join this great forum. I am a former Kitfox II (part owner) and am buiding a BushCaddy R80 for the last five years or so. Sooner or later it should fly! Powered by a Subaru EA81 with a few mods, going to post some stuff down the road, and all set for backcountry aviation. I also operate a small UL (thats Canadian for LSA) flying school here in our local area and provide some assistance for builders & buyers. Really have to blame the "Frozen Nose Fat Bastard" for the ongoing referral to this forum and to go and read up on this and on that and haven't you seen...
Hope I can contribute from our own trial and errors playing with Kitfoxes, Avids Highlanders, Zenair's, Challengers, Chinooks, Merlin GT's and most everything else that falls into this category. If you are Alaska bound, stop in, runway is downtown here in 100 Mile House and if you need more room and a bit better grass aim for CZML just to the right of 33. And if you are bored, there is a bit of local flying on youtube
    Best Regards, Willy T.
