Yep, late 1993 kit. First flew in 98. Rans didnt seem to change models they just modified the planes as they came along. The tail, trim and gear changed depending on when your kit was make durning the year. No one at Rans seems to know or have a record of what or when on the earlier models. I've found three different VNE speeds listed for the same airplane.
I have a 80 hp 912 sitting in the hanger to hang on it. I want to get it flying with the 582 and see how I like it first. If I dont like it was well as the KF I'll move it on and keep my eye out for a KF 4 or 5 project for the 912.

The latest info on my engine issues. Changed tach guess what, shes turning about 6800 static. I"ve repitched prop to bring it down to about 6200 static. It will run fine about 140-160 degrees at 3000-4000 rpm, I can run it up and down the runway with higher power but it wants to run the water temp up to 180 or so.(guage is right, I checked it against the kitchen therometer) It will cool back down if I let it idle about 2300rpm. Does that sound too far out of limits? It should cool better in the air right? It's mid 80's here today and humid. Funny thing is the cyl head temp is about 150 or so and the EGT's are down around 850-900. I'm sure that's telling me something but I don't know what. No one around here knows sqwat about a 582 so I'm on my own. I sure appreciate you guys inputs.
I listened to the EAA's webinar on "Is your two stroke about to fail" but about the only thing I came away with is buy a new one every 400 hours and sell the old one. Well I'm the guy with the old one!!

thanks

I got some from Kitfox. They are nice but the crimps on the ends are really big and a PITA to deal with on the install. Next time I'm going with the ones from Highwing.

I bought it from the widow of the second owner. I talked to the originial builder and he said it ran and cooled well for the 90 hrs. he flew it. It had been sitting several years when I got it. We took the carbs apart and cleaned them. Im wondering if the cooling and power problems are related. It has a UMA tach but I'm going to swap it out for the old aerosport tach from the KF 582 days to see if there is a difference. The rad is on the bottom of the fuse. I'll try and post a pic.
Thanks everyone for their thoughts and suggestions.
EG
thanks, plugs are a light brown. I'll try the primer to see if it will bring up the rpm. I was wondering about the tach, engine feels strong at full throttle but I dont have much to compare it to,(my KF has a 912) I have a spare tach that I might swap out to see any difference. Any ideas on cooling? The radiator is hot after running the engine so the theromstat must be opening. Do the water pumps go bad ? How would you check.

wish it sounded as strong as Joey's in his video's !

582 problems
Hello All,

I need some of your collective wisdom on a 582 greyhead I'm trying to get sorted out. Let me confess upfront that it's not on a KF or Avid but a Rans S7. However as a loyal KFIII owner I hope you will be understanding. ( I ended up owning this thing due to some reckless latenight web surfing and possibly a beer or two) Heres the deal, the a/c had been sitting up for a couple of years. It was running fine with about 125hrs. on it before. We've gone through the motor, pulled the cyls cleaned the rings, decarbed, syned the carbs etc. Now with the same prop and pitch it wont turn up past about 4800 rpm. It also wants to run the water temp up past 180 degrees when taxing around. The egts and cyl head temps are fine. The radiator has been flushed and coolent replaced. Anyone have any suggestions where to start sorting this out? It starts and runs fine.
Good thing I have the old reliable Kitfox to fly.

Thanks

need guage help
Guys,

I have simple ( or actually a simple minded) question. I have an electric UMA water guage on my 582. It reads 80 degrees when it it powered up. Is that considered zero or is it just reading ambient temp. I'm trying to determine if I have a cooling issue or a guage issue. I've taken the sender out of the waterline and put it in some cold water and it still reads 80 degrees. The cyl head temps and the egts are normal to low but the water temp is reading high (200+)

thanks,

I sloshed my KFIII tanks with the Hirsch product from ACS. So far so good after about three years. I try any find the lowest ethanol % gas in the area but I'm sure it's at least 5%. Coming up on three years now and no problems. (yet!)

This is my "go to" place when I have a question! A lot of helpful folks with real world knowledge here, not the "how much air do I put in my nose wheel?" types on some other sites! Entertaining posts as well. Thanks Leni !

starting a sitting 582
I'm about ready to start a 582 greyhead that hasnt been run in a couple of years. Would it be wise to run some pre-mix in addition to the injector for an hour or so just to make sure everything is working and good and lubed ? carbs have been rebuilt seals replaced etc. any suggestions welcome, I'm new to two strokes.

Thanks,

582 been sitting
Guys,

I have a grey head 582 that has been sitting un-used for about three years. It was fogged and tapped up well prior to storage. What should I be doing and looking for prior to putting it back in service? about 110 tt on engine
thanks,

handheld problems
I'm having problems making my Vertex VXA 150 work in my Kitfox. I've tried both an external antenna and the rubber duckie, both receive fine but when I try to transmitt I'm unreadable. I think it is background noise. On the ground everyone can hear me fine with the engine running but not in the air. I've tried it with the internal mic on the handheld turned off using the headset mic and with the headset mic unplugged and using the internal radio mic, no difference. The radio is on it's own battery and not tied into the a/c electrical system in any way. Any suggestions before I spring for a new radio ? I'm using a Peltor 7004 headset that works fine in other high noise aircraft.

I'm pretty sure it is Kreem giving the age and what I've been able to learn fron KF. The orginal coating looks to be in good shape, I suspect that I have some pin holes opened up over the years. If the orginal coating is intact wonder if you need to remove it all before you reslosh with the same material

leaking tanks
anyone have any good suggestions or recommendations on how to fix leaking 13 gal fiberglass KF tanks. They appeared to have been sealed with Kreem but after sitting for a month or so with fuel in the they have begun to leak. I was careful not to use any gas with alcohol in it but who knows. Anyone had and luck with the various sloshing compounds out there.

thanks,

Flt rigging
I've have my KFIII 912ul up and flying and have some questions about getting it rigged correctly. It will fly pretty much hands off straight and level. It turns to the right very nice. Turning left is another story. I know I'm fighting the torque as well as the adverse yaw but I have a job keeping the ball anywhere close to center. Is this just normal with an airplane as neutrally stable as the KFIII or can I adjust some of this out. All and all I really like the thing, it really performs.
thanks,

23. egp8111 added a post in a topic spar attach plates

Thanks. I spoke with the folks at Blue Sky, they dont make the inserts anymore because there was a lack of demand. They were very nice and described the insert. It sounds like a good machine shop could turn some out. I like the idea of the inserts, they would increase the spar strength in this area. I'm not so warm and fuzzy about all the loads being transfered to the spar by four ss pop rivets although it obviously hasnt been a problem.

spar attach plates
The holes in the spar around the forward attach plates (where the attach pin goes into the fuse. attach fitting) are worn on my KFIII. The steel re-enforcement plates (WFT-14) are still tight it's just the hole in the alum. spar. Any thoughts on how concerned I should be about about this ? Are the loads being transfered to the spar by the steel plates ? I cant see how a hole in the alum spar could be expected to hold up very long anyway. Any thoughts on how the structure works in this area?

thanks,

25. egp8111 added a post in a topic Flaperon horn Heights

I had the same type of thing on my KFIII rebuild. The rib tails with the flapperon hangers had been replaced and the inboard rib tail was out of line with the others. I was able to go in and with a little heat and some gentle prying loosen the rib from the spar and the cap strips. You can then reposition and reepoxy the rib tail back in the proper position. It wasn't too bad a job really just go easy and gentle. I suspect it would be easier than trying to sort out rerigging the flapperon mixer system to compensate for a mis-aligned rib. That thing is bad enough to get right as it is!
good luck
