Just to give you guys an idea of what 300 hp does in a sled. The skidoo didn't even make it up the hill whereas the RX1 made a real good showing on what I would guess is at 10# of boost. The Apex comes up at probably 17-18 pounds of boost.    Ken..........

This is what they look like. If you try anything else you'll probably end up ruining the primary clutch. You just thread it through the primary and the smooth part goes into the end of the crank and pushes the clutch off the shaft. Don't use a cheapo one because the can bend and get stuck inside the crank.

Unless you adjust the RX1 clutching to make up for the 25% power loss this won't be much of an accurate test.

Just so you guys know , some of the early rx1 snowmobiles experienced some kind of cracking on the oil tanks because of vibration. It may have been caused by all the bouncing around that a snowmobile goes through which shouldn't be a factor in a plane but I would mount them with some kind of rubber bushings between the tin and the frame. Check out this link.

If you pull those carbs apart be real gentle with the needles. The plastic part that holds them in place is real easy to break if you push them down too hard and Yamaha doesn't sell just that part. Also don't forget the tiny o-ring underneath the carb cap.

The RX1 engine is designed to run at a peak of 10500 rpms and has a gear reduction built into it that makes the output shaft rpm about 8500. That and the gear reduction on the gearbox will get the prop speed down to where it needs to be. I've run my turbo RX1 to 11000 when I was grass dragging it.

I don't know what the deal is. I just talked to Terry and his says it'timed out also. I can click on either one and they both come up. Maybe c5engineer can get his videos to work. Anyway Terry told me to put the particulars of his plane on here.
It originally had a 503 with a Warpdrive prop on it and weighed 405 pounds.
    Added  new landing gear
    4 caliper Matco brakes
Matco 8'' wheels with 22' manco tires
RX1 engine ,radiator, oil tank, and all the goodies to make the 4 stroke work
    Matco 8'' dual fork tailwheel
    74'' Prince P tip prop.
Empty wieight was 560# and 15# had to be added to the tail

Do you have any pictures or a link to these aftermarket headers to fit the RX1 sled. I've never seen or heard of any headers,(other than the ones for turbos) just an aftermarket muffler to cut some weight.

The sled didn't get the nickname (RX1 Ton) for being lightweight. Mine weighed in at 715 pounds full of all liquids. The complete exhaust system weighed in at 42 pounds and the muffler was a good part of that.

Isn't the idea of a muffler to quiet things down ?

670 Rotax Needs rebuild SOLD, SOLD,SOLD
I don't see too many people here running the 670. I've got a 94 model out of a Skidoo Mach1 that I've heard is one of the good years to use for aircraft. The cylinders and pistons looked good but the crank needs to be rebuilt. It would make a good parts engine.

I can ship it. The carbs and exhaust y-pipe can go with it. I'll see what the whole lot will cost to ship. I'm in Montana.

The crank is already tapered. This motor came out of a Skidoo that was built in 8th month of 93. Also, this engine has all the booses in the pto end that need to be drilled and tapped.

I don't think there is any machining involved. The press the crank apart and put new bearings on the rods and mains and use new pins to put it all back together.

Thanks for the info 1avidflyer. I've never seen a 2 stroke without the pressed together crank but there might be some out there. As far as the price, I'd like to get $400 for it.

Hi, my name is Ken and I live in Great Falls, MT. I'm not really into flying but my brother Terry is. He's the one that is putting the RX1 snowmobile engine in an Avid that has a little write-up in the 4 stroke engine section. I just made a trip down south to Arizona to bring him the engine for it. I'm waiting patiently to see his plane fly. It should be a world of difference going from a 503 Rotax to the 140 horse RX1 engine. I'm into snowmobiles as my biggest money spending hobby. I've been riding a 03 RX1 mountain sled since Nov. 2002. It has a homebuilt turbo system on it that I made and has run as high as 330 hp at 20 pounds of boost but In my older and smarter years I have turned it down to about 240 hp which makes it a lot more fun to ride. Hopefully his plane will be ready to fly in the near future. I want a ride .
