Today I filled the gaps between the spars and fuel cell with body filler.  Then I wrapped the fuel cell with two layers of fiberglass as per the plans. One done, one more to go.

Today we took the wings off to begin fabric soon. Put the fuselage back in the rotisserie to work on the new landing gear fitment. The gear is a real piece of artwork, so happy I upgraded! Finished epoxying  the flaperons. Thanks to Ron, I have a nice Magnum wing rotisserie to use!!

    Thanks Ed,
It is amazing how much time it takes to modify anything, the lights were just about 1/2" wider than the mount, so it only cost me 6 hours to build it up to look right! Part of the fun :))
I will be very visible putting along at 100 mph!!!

    Merry Christmas All,
Got back to the Magnum tonight. Worked on running wiring for tip lights. Ran the pitot tubing. Installed the pitot mounting bracket. Then worked on widening the wing tip light brackets  so they fit the lights I got from Ed. Measured the wings again to be sure they are square with the fuselage.  Next step is to pull the wings back off and put them in the rotisserie to finish fiber-glassing the tanks in and then fabric time!

Well, it has been a long while, but I thought I would update this post. I decided to design my own gear but have somebody else build it because I wanted it welded right! I can weld, but I thought the landing gear was too critical for me to experiment with! That being said, I had to weld brackets on the front mounts to provide attach points for the cabane V. The gear measures 32" Tall and 73" from axle plate to axle plate. I stole rough numbers from Randy because I liked the AoA on his Avid.
Steve Furjersi at Experimental Aircraft Fabrication inc built the gear for me, and I bought his unique suspension system too. He is a great guy and he really helped engineer a cool gear for my Magnum.
I'm attaching pictures, so take a look, and throw spears if you have them, because I want all of your input!

    Thanks,
    Ron

Ed,  I actually fired those lights up tonight, they are blinding!!!  I will have to do some fiberglass work to make them fit a little better, but not a big deal.  Thanks for lights!!

Don't know anything about the older wing tips, just what cam with mine. Glad you think they will be efficient, maybe break the 110mph mark, wow! That's my hanger mates tri-pacer. Good old birds!! Not sure if it is original paint, but could be!

Today was right wing root ribs, basically a repeat of yesterday but went fast since I had the jigging already figured out from yesterday. My friend rick also came by to help as well.  Then I decided to install the trailing edge on the left wing. The kit did not supply enough material to do both wings, I had to order more. The inventory list even called out five 48" pieces of trailing edge? That only leaves 1 piece for the other wing? Oh well, just another bump in the Magnum road :)))

    Ed,
All I can figure is the tanks are pretty thin and it helps to strengthen them and prevent future leaks.  I am new to this type of build (I normally work with aluminum) so I am just doing as the manual and others have done. However, I will be looking for fiberglass mat that is clean and easy to lay down to try to minimize the weight and also the finish work after.  P.S. the USPS lost those LED lights, seems they delivered them to the wrong mail box and someone kept them.  Still waiting for them to find them.......argh......

Today we attached the ribs behind the left fuel tank and installed the jury strut mounts. Then set up the ribs and jigging for the right wing ribs behind the fuel tank.

Yes, 7 attach points, 7 long ribs.

Jim, that is defiantly an important measurement. I actually clamped my flaperons on last night before gluing the ribs. The fabulous manual does actually tell us to do this prior (during) setting the final ribs to the tank. One thing to make mention of is that the wing drawing has the root rib flush with the wing tank. This is wrong, the root rib must be 1/2" past the wing tank towards the fuselage for the root  flaperon hing to line up. The rib spacing is just as the plans describe with 7 attach points for the flap hinges. 11 13/16" rib spacing and 23 11/16" between the long ribs.

Today I installed the final false ribs near the fuel tanks, then fitted the 4 trailing ribs that are epoxied to the fuel tanks and rear spars. Nothing fits very good and the indentations in the fuel tanks are in the wrong locations, so modifications to the ribs are necessary. There are a LOT of missing instruction in the build manual, so some fabrication is necessary and some of the parts are not produced with much precision (mostly fiberglass issues), but for the most part it is going together fairly smooth. I also ran in to a snag with the rib spacing. The previous owner was off about 1/2" and the root rib is going to have to be 1/2" too far towards the fuselage, but it should be okay.

Figured out the fix for this, all I had to do was cut the excess lip off of the tanks to get the ribs to fit.

Today, with my friends Ralph and Rick, we mounted the wings to the fuselage so I could mount the fuel tanks and the rest of the ribs. Sanded and leaked checked the fuel tanks and repaired various leaks.
