    What is the dimension from the long cross tube to the top of your firewall.  I'll try to measure mine tomorrow.  If the 582 is 15" from the motor mount base to the top of the engine, mine might be too high.  If you have time tomorrow, I might give you a call.  Jim

    Jim I will be using the 582 w/c box.  I have my firewall kinda set but not really.  I was waiting to get my engine set before I installed it. I will attach a pic of what I have now.  All of this is preliminary.  Still trying to figure it out.

    Okay fellows, I cut the motor mount off and bought the one on Barnstormers.  The plans I have were down loaded from this site and do not show how the correct way to install the bolt on mount.  When I look at several pics on here of the mounts and try to copy the location on mine, it seems too high.  What is to proper location on the motor?  I can always move the mount to fit that dimension,  Thanks Jim

    I contacted Avid aircraft about a set of flapperons a couple of weeks ago.  He said they could ship both flapperons thru Fastenal for a flat rate of $150. That might be an option for the spars. Jim

    After looking closer at the pic, I do see the blue pex tubing. The elevator control rod I need to fabricate.  I ordered all the parts, just need to get them put together.

    Sorry Jim. I went back and looked and it was Fillmanw's rebuild project that I saw.  I have more tubing coming next week so I can add those tubes you're talking about.  I'm thinking if I build a new mount using 3/4" x .065 wall tube.  Is that strong enough? From looking at the photos it looks like you used push-pull cables for your rudder and elevator.  How difficult were those to add?  Thanks, Jim

    Need 582 motor mount
    Finally got around to cutting off the motor mount on my Avid A.  Got the tubes all cleaned up and a new section tacked on.  Does anyone have a mount that will fit an A or do I have to build one from scratch?  I'm gonna extend the foot well also so  will be a start. Does anyone have pics of cutting the mount off and cleaning up the front tubes and supports?  I found some that Jim Chuk did I think. Looking for more ideas. Thanks, Jim

    Has anybody split the ailerons and the flaps? Seems like it would be fairly easy to do using the 3/4" tube for the outer portion and 1" slid over it inboard for the flaps. Just asking!!

    Thank guys.  I tried to make a pattern of it and it seems like I will have to make 4 holes for the tubes to pass thru, but to get to the holes I will need to cut a slit thru the firewall and slide it over the tubes.  Or, I could cut it in half vertically and cut a slit to the holes. That might be easier. I was hoping it would be easier than that. Any more ideas?  I'm open to all.

    Without cutting the motor mount off of the front, is there a trick to installing the firewall? Any Model A flyers evr done this?  I'm open to all suggestions.  Thanks

    Thanks guys.  When I sanded off the primer to attach some fittings it had another paint under it.  A black paint and a yellow tinted paint.  It had a strong odor to it.  Not sure what that was. Epoxy it is.

    Primer for fuselage
    Is epoxy primer the only primer we can use under the poly fiber system or is urathane okay to use without causing problems with the fabric coming loose.  When I bought my project the guy said it was painted with rustoleum primer.  I brushed on some polytac and it didn't seem to bother it.  But to be safe what should I put on it.

    Thanks guys.  I removed the lower tube and installed one like Jim shows in his photo. I also installed standoffs to widen it 4".  I think I'll do as Jim said and cut a couple of inches off.  Looks too wide at 4.  I am making templates for the gusset now and will weld those in tomorrow.  
    Nlappas, I am 5'10" tall but at 71 not real flexible as before.  Only passenger would be the wife or the grand kids. So if I don't need to lengthen it I wont.  I have a Kolb also but it is too small for passengers.  I plan on using 1/2" 6061 tube down the sides instead of the wood stringers.

    Thanks Jim.  After looking at the way you did your's I think it will be easy to do thank.  Are you using a lawn mower battery or something heavier?  I am going out to the shop today to start on the widening of the fuselage.  I have the A model.  Can it be widened three inches per side or is that too wide?

    Confused?
    After reading everything I can find on the forum, I have pretty much decided to go with the upside down 582.  I am going to widen the fuselage as Jim has shown in his posts.  I am still confused as to whether or not I need to stretch the fuselage?  I finished building the extended aerobat and I now have the fuselage set up in the shop and I am ready to modify it as is needed.  I guess after reading all the info on here and other sites, I am on info over load.  I am going to add the gussets and strengthening that Jim and Tjay has posted about but is lengthening the fuselage necessary? Longer gear legs? I did enlarge the rudder and elevator,  I'm just confused about the rest.

    Nice looking bird.  I read comments on here about stretching the early Avids.  I am getting ready to do that to my model a.  Does anybody have any pics of them doing this?  If so, I think the group would like to see somee.  I know I would.
