    First Flight
After much waiting, the Avid has finally flown!!!

It was a near calm evening in Vermilion yesterday and after a few test runs up and down runway, I poured the coals to the Avid and she lept off the ground and climbed like a rocket. It was most fun i've had flying in a long time. All that time spent inspecting, repairing, and painting has finally paid off. What a great feeling to fly a new plane for the first time and to do it solo. I feel a little like how a test pilot must feel after they hop in a new plane and take it skyward for the first time. I've included a couple pictures from last night.

That's a nice looking cover. I could really use one of those with all this rain we've been getting lately. I lucked out and a fellow avaitor has been lending me space in his hangar to keep the Avid from turning into a drowned rat. Although before he did I had rushed and put a regular tarp over the windshield and top and now i'm headed out there today to try and buff out the wierd smudges on the windows.

The weather here has been terrible lately and especially today. I woke up at 7am to check the weather and it was still pouring rain, 500ft ceilings and gusting to beat heck. Not one plane flew in but many people drove in according to my coworkers. I was one of the lazy ones that looked out the window and went back to bed So no pictures to show off to everyone. Maybe next year!

    Fly in Breakfast at CYLL
I know that i'm most likely the only one to make to this one but I thought i'd let everyone know about it anyways.

The airport I work at Lloydminster, AB (CYLL) and the local flying club are hosting a fly in breakfast on June 19th.

I'll be sure to post some pictures of the flock that shows up. Hopefully i'll have replaced this pesky oil seal in the gearbox and will get to fly the Avid to it.

  5. TheDeltaFox added a post in a topic Run Up

I finally got a chance yesterday to pull the plane out of the garage and fire it up. I was happy as could be when it started on the second pull. Actually, i was rather surprised seeing as i had the engine apart. 3 or 4 shots of primer to get the fuel going to it and two solid pulls and away it went. All this was overshadowed by my wife waving her hands to kill the engine. Turns out one of the carbs decided to start leaking fuel rather quickly onto the driveway. Thats why its always a good idea to have a spotter. Also explains why it wasn't as smooth as I thought this little 2 stroke should be.
After taking the suspect carb off and fiddling with it and then cleaning it, i came to the conclusion that the needle valve wasn't sealing properly. It had little black indents/rings on the rubber tip. Also the brass float bracket seemed to be binding a bit on the pin it sits on.
So i ordered a carb kit and new pin/float bracket. Should be here soon. I'm getting rather excited to get this bad boy over to the airport and start some real tests on it.

    Run Up
I've got my engine back on after tearing it down and putting new seals in it. Done a ton of other touch ups to the plane as well and ready to run it up.

I still have it at home in the garage and was wondering if its ok to run it up with the wings folded back. I was planning to tie it to my truck so it can't accidently move on me and fire it up in the driveway. Anything i should know before i do it?

    Thanks,

    Darcy

I'm in Vermilion, AB. Maybe one day after spraying season is over we could split the distance and meet in Kindersley. I still head down there probably twice a year to visit my old AME boss and shoot the breeze. He's rebuilding a Cessna crane and i'd like to see he his progress this summer.

I've flown in to Swift Current a time or two. Love the old WW2 BCATP hangars there. I use to work as an AME apprentice many years ago out of Kindersley and we'd go do annuals there and all over south western sask. If remember correctly there is someone with a yellow Avid that keeps it at YYN.

Are you by any chance planning on flying up to Corman Airpark for their annual fly in?

Great pictures. Now I wonder if the wife would let me put a pinup girl like that on the avid?

    Looks awesome!!

I'm curious where you got your tail spring from. Mine appears to have a much shallower angle on it.

  12. TheDeltaFox added a post in a topic Old bird, older engine...

I had a couple free hours today and after extending one wing in the garage and sitting in my Avid for 10 minutes making airplane noises i heard this drip, drip, drip. Hmmm, so i hop out and find a puddle of fuel on the floor. Reached in an turned the fuel off and then took the cowls off and noticed it was leaking out the air filter of the one carbs. I do remember touching the primer and think i must have cause some sort of siphoning action by acccident. I then decided it was time to start going through her and seeing what needs to be done to fly. Right away i noticed the Rotary valve tank was bone dry and one of the carb boots was cracked half way around. I'm sure glad the old owners didn't try to fly it over to me and really glad i didn't give it just the once over and try to fly it home. Now off to search the internet for parts.

Thanks, I just got her home yesterday and going to give her a full annual before she gets in the air. Theres some cosmetic work, well lots of cosmetic work to do but i probably won't get carried away as she'll be covered in mud most the time where i plan on taking her.

Here's a picture of FBOJ on the trialer right before i tucked her in the garage for some TLC time.

    Old bird, older engine...
The bird is coming home this week. Either by trailer or by air. It hasn't flown for a couple years and only put probably 10 hours on it in the past 8 years.

It has the older 582 grey head in it and i'm wondering if i shouldn't by all new seals for it and put them in or if i should run it up and see where the EGT temps are sitting and such and keep an eye out for leaks.

I haven't owned a 582 or any aircraft 2 stroke before and wondering how much trouble i might be getting in to. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Windshield
    Hey Guys,

I'm curious as to the thickness of Lexan I'll need to replace the windshield once i get my avid mark IV home next week. Also is there any special tricks and tips so i'm not making a second order for more lexan?

    Thanks

I have to admit that I didn't listen to the whole recording because of how stupid this guy is. Being one of the guys who sits in a tower all day providing air traffic services, i've seen a few situations like this before. My favorite was a guy who wanted to fly through a restricted airspace that was in place for high powered rocket launches. He said, " just tell them to stay out of my way" I was doing a tape check on a co worker and after hearing how he put up with this guy i thought he deserved a medal.

    New Avid Owner
    Hello everyone,

My name is Darcy and over the last week i've purchased an Avid STOL serial number 1057. I've been trying to find an Avid for a while and when fate put one only 40 miles from me and at an extremely reasonable price, i jumped on it. Almost literally! Needless to say i'm extremely excited to get it home. It's waiting in the good hands of a small flying of which i just recently rejoined and although i could of just joined the club and starting flying it, i couldn't pass up the opportunity to make an offer. The gentlemen there have taken good care of it and haven't really flown it much since the club purchased it about 10 years ago. With the great performance of this machine and some cosmetic adjustments, i think it'll be a heck of good little plane. The only down side to buying this Avid is my '46 J3 cub that i'm restoring is taking a back burner. I might just have to sell it one of these days.
Anyways, i thought i'd just introduce myself and also to let you know that you have a great site here with loads of information that i am grateful for.
