I have the 8" dual fork and it may be somewhat different than the single when it comes to shimmy, not sure.  I had a period of shimmy when I wheel land and the tw touched down but on Matco's recommendation I tightened the vertical axle and now the shimmy for the most part is gone.  Two different strengths of springs on the tail wheel are the general recommend setup to solve shimmy.   I like mine, much nicer than the Maule (aka mal).

I hope this works out better for you than the experience I had with floats that were recalled a couple of years ago.

I like using .060 Lexan leftover from the build.  Put it in a brake or bend it in a vice and attach with double sided tape.  Mine is about 4 X 4" with the bend at 2" leaving 2" to attach to the rudder start with about 20 degrees and go from there. The down side of the Lexan is that it's hard to tweak in place. Aluminum is better for finding the right bend angle but the Lexan is almost invisible and doesn't get mangled.

I am wondering if the struts were properly primed and painted to begin with.  Mine were powdered coated at the factory and I hope that they will fair better than those.   I guess another advantage of living in a dry, salt free climate is that things don't rust at the drop of a hat.  Many of the Avids gear legs were faired the same way so I guess those may have the same problems.  Thanks for posting your findings maybe it will save someone else.

Jenki, take a look at the Zipper kit which with new piston and cylinders the 80 HP becomes 105 HP.  I installed mine this spring and now have about 50 hrs on it.  Much cheaper than upgrading to the 912S.

    Cracked tire
There were several of us that bought the Matco 8" dual fork tailwheel a couple of years back and this relates to that tire furnished with the TW.  I noticed a crack up by the rim about 1/2' long so I ordered a new from Matco.  When I replaced it I found that the crack was all the way thru the sidewall.  The tire was in good shape otherwise and the plane had always been stored inside.  These are the Carlisle tires made in China and like all of the others (other plane) that I have purchased are not round  but at least they don't cost $100's of dollars.  Maybe there is a better tire out there.  I did let Matco know but did not press them for a replacement $35 just is not worth the hassle and they were making excuses.  Who would be surprised, a defective Chinese tire.

I do not use carb heat on my 3300, or on my 912 total of 1250 hours but I do live and fly for the most part in a very dry climate.

That second picture is my little Avid over Jackson Lake with the Tetons in the background Larry.
I did not take that many pictures, just to darn busy flying to all the great strips around the area.  We left Casper Thursday morning and made Jc that evening after waiting out a solid wall of storms in the mountains just past Challis, ID.  About five in the evening it looked like we could weave our way thru the storms and weave we did thru rain sleet and lighting way to close to my wing tip.  We thought that Johnson Creek might be crowded but by Sat at the peak the were just 25 planes, mostly 180's.  and most of the folk came to camp and really didn't fly out that much.  Friday we went over to Indian Creek (photo in my first post) and then looped around to Thomas, Lower Loon, Bernard Soldier Bar, Big Creek many others along the way and then to Warren for lunch at the Bar now under new management and the burgers were great.  We finished up the flying with a trip to McCall for fuel and then back to JC for an afternoon of relaxing.  The next couple of days was just more strip hopping to places like Moose Creek, our most northern strip to visit, another lunch at Warren.
The trip home today we saw ground speeds up to 135 KTS with a great tailwind pushing us back to Casper.  I will get some pictures from Dallas and post them later.  Wish you could all have been there!  Hope to get back again later in the year.

    Back from JC
Just returned from Johnson Creek, a great 5 day trip to the Idaho backcountry.  If you ever wondered what Ole Yeller would look like up there Larry, here you go.  I bet some of you will know where this picture was taken.

The mat does not work well with the epoxy because of the sizing as Mark mentioned, the polyester releases the fibers and that allows them to move and to be shaped.  The epoxy will not do that so the mat cannot be shaped to go around compound curves.  Bite the bullet and buy the good bidirectional Rutan cloth and save yourself a lot of misery IMHO.

I think it is a typo, I have been using 5606 in the Airheart brakes in my Q2 for the last 20 years.

Yes I found a hangar for him to use for a week or so but it looks like me may get it home tomorrow.  The fellow that owns Backcountry Cubs of Wyoming had an empty hangar that he loaned us.

    Trip report
I had a nice mission for my Q2 last week, out from  Casper to Merril, WI to purchase Ole Yeller from Larry.  We departed Casper Thursday at 6:30 MDT with the sun in our eyes headed for KLYV for the midway fuel stop.  The climb out to 11,500 was smooth behind the sweet little Jabiru 3300, with a bit of a tailwind we settled into a 165 knot cruise for the journey.  It didn't take long to cross over HSP at the southern end of the Blackhills and finally joining up with I-90 over the wide Missouri.  It is farm country most the rest of the way.  We took on 15 gallons of fuel at LYV and by the way it's a good cheap fuel stop for anyone taking the northern route OSH.  Back in the air and on to the Mississippi cross over into WI at 8500 on this leg.  It is at this point I finally turn the stick over to my friend Dallas, a 20K hour pilot and he takes us down to 3,500 and the air gets a little bumpy for the rest of the journey to KRRL.  The airspeed is 180 KTS the rest of the way and we are burning more fuel but why should I care Dallas is footing the bill because we are headed out to pickup a Kitfox IV that he is buying.  15 gallons of fuel for this leg.

Friday we flew back along the same route.  The Q does not like to fly 90 knots so right after takeoff I waved goodbye as I speed by the little KF and on back to The Wild West.  The weather was going down hill fast in Casper and the 6 KTS headwind sheared into a 20 KTS tailwind as I was on the home stretch around noon.  About six that evening I received a call from Dallas saying he is 50 miles out of Douglas ,WY and requested that I find a hanger in Douglas due to the weather going down fast.  My wife and I hopped into the pickup and headed for Douglas 50 miles away.  The visibility is now about 200 ft in wind driven rain and lightning dancing all around, I'm on the phone looking for a hangar and Mary is in my right ear saying something about its not worth killing our selves.  Anyway to shorten this tale up Dallas makes a white knuckle landing into the rain and wind and we drive home to Casper.  The KF is still in Douglas waiting for some better weather to get it home.

The Qbird won't fly that slow so I saw him about a mile out of Your airport as I passed him.

I think Dallas maybe signed up already but if not I will work on him.  Nice to get to meet you.  We had quite the adventure, two days, over 1500 miles by air and then topped it off with another 75  miles to pickup Dallas.  Nice to get the Q2 out for a ride.  We should be back for Oshkosh this summer.

Here is a link to the Files and Forms section of this list that tells about the Maul TW. The cam is seen in figure 10 just above the grease zerk held in place by two screws.  Removing it may help.

I do not see the spring that helps to support the carb in your photo.  Did it get disconnected in the crash or was it not installed?  With bad floats in my 912 the engine ran rough at idle but would smooth out at full throttle but I was not venting the carbs to the filters.  If the float/s were at fault it will show up when you weigh the floats.

Crap man that sucks but airplanes are repairable and you don't need repaired.  Bad day but a good outcome.  Guess I should keep an eye on my floats that I replaced under warranty.
