I did not paint mine.  I have some on my Q bird (different brand same material) been on there for over 10 years and doing fine.

No, I think that they call for UE-820 Reducer which is designed for Aerothane.  Polyurethane paint isn't as easy as the Polytone to paint with and you will want a good outside air source feeding a full protective hood.  If you are going for that shiny wet look expect to use 50% or more paint to fill the weave which will add a fair amount of weight.  Also repairs are much harder to make them look good without painting a whole panel (wing).  More than you asked I know, but my 2 cents worth and just one opinion.

Nice Larry, nothing like a first flight.

Once you get it sanded and you are happy with it remember to squeegee on the "neat" coat of epoxy to fill the pen holes.  Looking good.

  7. wypaul added a post in a topic What is an Avid Mk IV project worth?

Is there structure missing in the cockpit area, wonder what the 2X4 is doing there if not.  Appears to have 2 sets of wings, the second unfinished one appear to have the wingtip in place is just visible in one of the pictures.  Not a MK IV for sure note the wood on the top and bottom of the fuselage and the straight HS.

If you are just going with one layer of glass on the outside it may be to flexable to hold its shape with the foam removed from the back side. So one thing you can do is put the micro slurry on the outside a good 1/4" thick as per the article and then wait to finish it after the inside layers are in place.

Yes you can run it with the two into one straight pipes, I switched to the straight pipes on my 3300 and it is only slightly louder than with the muffler.

Finishing composite (Fiberglass) Cowlings and etc
Here is a reference that I told Joey about that is the easy way and the quick way to finish epoxy layup projects.

PS Ignore the part about primers.  Featherfill is junk.  Use a good primer recommended for the paint system you plan to use.

Sounds like a plan that will work.  I suggest that you use West epoxy and Rutan cloth for your layup.  It only cost a little more than the polyester crap and is so much easier to work and finish. Having built a 24' sailboat using polyester and an airplane with epoxy, epoxy is the material for me, also built a couple of cowls from scratch with epoxy.  I have some good references for finishing epoxy parts the easy way if you chose to go that route. PM me, if you are interested in talking about it, with your number and I will give you a call.

You can brake a piece of Lexan if you would like to keep the clear look.  It should reduce a little drag and it may clear up the air flow to the empennage also.

  14. wypaul added a post in a topic Starting my kitfox 1 build pictures here

I used a piece of flaired steel brake line for the pitot tube.  A brass fitting was installed on the rib in the same location as Larry's on the wing.  The fitting is inside the wing and then the flaired 1/8" line is cut to length, bent and threaded on.  Also put an inspection port in that area of the wing.  The line I used was painted??? black.

  15. wypaul added a post in a topic Old Adhesive?

I bought new 9460 when I built my wings.  The 3M stuff that came with the kit I used for non critical parts and it worked just fine (25 years old) but for the few dollars that the new stuff costs it is not worth taking the chance in my book, others mileage may very.  Two years old probably just fine,  previous statement still applies for me.  How the product was stored also plays into the equation, refrigerated I might be tempted, stored in a hot hangar not so much.

My shipping list for the MK IV lists AN5-17 for that bolt, I will try to get out to the plane later today and verify that.

I built a Lift Reserve Indicator and flew with it for a while but took it out, It worked ok, but these little planes are not jets doing wild maneuvers.  For me I found that I did not gain anything with it and did not look at it after the novelty wore off , just one man's opinion, but save your time and money.  It was fun building the probe though!

Don't let the thought of doing fabric freak you out.  It is really easy to do and the painting is a snap with PolyFiber products, well Polytone for sure.  Get the PolyFiber manual and have some fun.

  21. wypaul added a post in a topic Jabiru 2200

TJ the 3300 should be one of the later (good) hydraulic lifter engines.  I tried to copy the info from the jabiruengine site but didn't have the right software to get the job done.  Only users that were signed up before it was pulled down have access or I would post a link.

    Maybe this will work;

No liquid cooling of course and parts are generally cheaper with fewer parts count, no tuning  multi carbs and simpler operation.  That said it will depend which 2200 you are looking at.  The solid lifter engines are good but stay away from the early model with Al rods.  The early hydraulic lifter engines are not so good and the later hydraulic are very good.  So if it were me I would look for an engine between serial #1598-2067 these are solid lifter models with some other important mods and then engines after #3095 which are the later hyd with the 260 degree cam.

Not to sure why anyone would pay that price for out dated Terra when there are modern radios like MGL's V6 for less money and way more features.  I have one in my Avid and really like it.

    Aircraft Electrical
Here is a link to the best aircraft electrical site that I know.
    http://www.aeroelectric.com/
His book (12th edition) and CD are the bible for aircraft electrical.  Worth many times what he is asking price wise.

  25. wypaul added a post in a topic Transponder antenna location?

The ground plane will work just fine without bonding to the airframe.  I used the same setup in my Q2 which is a composite aircraft for many years with flawless results.  Just attach the shielding of the coax to the "ground plane" and the center to the "antena".
