Nice airstrip and you are right it is beautiful country.  You are going to enjoy flying your new plane from there.  Is your shop on the same property?

  3. wypaul added a post in a topic Who's running a 406 ELT?

I have the 406 in the Avid, thought it was a good plan for the backcounty flying.  Then while talking to the local CAP they said that the old one was ok but SPOT offered the best protection for the money and if he had to choose between an ELT and the SPOT it would be the SPOT hands down.  If I would have talked to him first I would have stuck with the 121.5 and bought the SPOT saving myself a pile of money.  That was just one mans opinion but it carried weight with me.  I still have the 121 in the Q2 and don't plan to up grade that one.

No braking necessary but you will notice a little throttle needed to reach the top of the hill!

  5. wypaul added a post in a topic VGs? Who has them and do you like them?

I placed them on the wing top on my MK IV at the recommended position (StolSpeed) and I didn't get any reduction in stall speed but it did increase the angle of attack at which the wing stalled.  That was not very helpful, making the plane wanting to land tail first.  I have removed most of the VG's but left them on the last two feet of each wing thinking that it may help reduce the effect of the excessive washout that was built into the wings (plans built).  I don't know if it has had any effect with that.  I do plan to try installing the VG's more to the rear and see if I get better results but have not done so at this time. To be continued sometime in the future.

The biggest thing for me was the fact that it wanted alittle power to land it.  Mine is a MK IV with a 912.  Also double check the wheel alignment.  I also suggest that you remove cam on the Maule tail wheel so that will not break free until you get some time in the plane.

No snow here in Wyoming yet, headed for 75 F today again. On the bright side looks like it will be time to dig out the skis before to long up there in the north country.

  12. wypaul added a post in a topic Wing Fuel Tank Needed

I do have the jar sealed but if I think about it I will get some gasohol and refresh it.  Phenol novolac epoxy is what they use in industrial setting to protect against alcohol destroying tanks and the likes so I am sure that much better tests have been conducted.  Guess I could just pour in a little Gin every now and again  Just can't stand the thought of putting alcohol into gasoline.

  13. wypaul added a post in a topic Wing Fuel Tank Needed

I used Caswell in my tanks before building my wings after doing the research into the epoxy (phenol novolac epoxy) that they sell and can recommend their product.  If you have the tank removed it is an easy process and fully explained on the website.  I looked into vinyl ester resin also but could not find good info about how well it would stick to the polyester resin of the fuel tanks.
Vinylester resin is a good choice for building a new tank which is not that difficult of a project if you want to tackle it but much easier to order from The vender Doug mentioned in his post.
Here is a link to Caswell:

PS I have a test block of the caswell epoxy setting in gasohol for the last three years and it is still solid and I should add that I will never put gasohol in my plane unless there is a pressing reason but we do have alcohol free fuel for auto here where I live.

So far looking good, it is very close to the old as far as look and feel goes.  Just thought I would try the picture.

  15. wypaul added a post in a topic Airdale Backcountry s/n 007 Rebuild Diary

I used the Caswell epoxy sealer in my tanks before I installed them and really liked it.. .probably not so easy after the tank is installed but doable with a couple of people to roll the wings around.  I have a test piece of the epoxy soaking in gasohol for about three years+ and it is still untouched..

PS the mix ratio is critical and touchy!

The runway is setting at right around 5400' and in the summer 8000' DA is common. It is cleared to 60+ feet wide and headed directly into the prevailing wind.  Man 5' off each wing tip and the dirty air when you drop in there I bet that is a challenge Leni.

That addition sure is looking good Jim.

First landing and T/O at my new airstrip today.  Just about 20 hrs of build time 15 hrs. with the 410 John Deere and about 3 hours with the pickup and the drag to get it "smooth".  Nothing like that Gospel Lake strip of Larry's or Jim's airstrip this is a backcountry one way airstrip.  I will get the GoPro fired up for some video footage.  If anyone gets out to Central Wyoming and wants to land some airstrip let me know and we can go out and play.

PS  There is still a lot of work to do,  about 200 6-8' Juniper bushes to cut up, fine tuning on the leveling if we ever get some moisture and seeding which I will do before the first good snow but hey, it is usable now at least.

    Airstrip at the cabin
I started pioneering in the airstrip at the cabin yesterday.  The backhoe is at the top of the runway about 75 feet higher than the touchdown point.  Total length 750'.

I left my off until the inspection because the DAR's have different ideas.  I told him where I would like it and he told me where to put.  Mine ended up on the baggage compartment door (Avid MK IV).  Drilled and riveted it in place while he was completing the inspection.  Specs say that it cannot be on a removable panel, door and etc but your DAR may not care.

The Concept is easy enough but the al must be prepped and primed with the products PPG recommends. Nothing is as easy to spray as the PolyTone but the Concept is fairly simple. Concept is acrylic urethane and like Aerothane which is polyurethane it contains isocyanates and full protection is necessary for safe use. I see Poly-Fiber now has product called Poly-Fiber Mark II for metal and fiberglass in their standard colors and supplied air respirator is "not" required. I think I would lean in that direction if I were doing mine today.

I used PPG Concept for all FG and metal.  Polytone on the fabric but read that polytone was iffy for metal and fiberglass.

Have you put new floats is the carbs in the last year and a half?  There was a bad batch of floats that made the engine run rich and out of balance but if you get them to sync at low rpm then that probably is not your problem.  I spent a couple of months chasing the same deal only to find out that the new floats were no good.  There is a SB on them.
