Since when does a ground loop constitute a crash?  .. or so it would appear.

For that I would use a little super glue and small fabric patch from the back.  I'd be afraid to use the Poly products without doing full repair procedure.

Wow, gorgeous!  Beautiful photography.  Sign me up for a set of skis, and a change of locale to BC.

Carefully inspect the condition of the carb sockets. A crack allowing air in could cause a lean mix. If you're sure that all jets and needles match between the carbs, you could try swapping carbs to see if the problem moves.

  5. Av8r_Sed added a post in a topic Time for a new Tailwheel!

The aluminum spring I use is circa 1993 but has only been flying since 2012. It's stiff but really holds it's shape and gives the Maule tailwheel the proper angle to work well for me. I keep checking for fatigue cracks but no problem so far. I'm happy with it.

Very interesting, Fred.  My experience with the Maule has been exactly like yours.  The only thing I don't like is how harsh it rides when there are cracks in the runway/ taxiway.  This is amplified with my Grove aluminum tailwheel spring.  Your solution might work well for me too.  Can't wait for you to report back on this in operation.

Forgive my ignorance of the Mark IV, but couldn't you reuse the main gear by moving up to the next set of attach points and perhaps swapping sides?  There are better alternatives than the bungee gear, but none cheaper than using what you have already.

Remote mounting the magnetometer might be a later phase, but would make installation errors and your calibration routines easier to deal with.  If I were to do it I might use an I2C sensor (eg NXP MAG3110) with a level shifter to extend the distance.  Here's one possibility for the level shifter: OnSemi - Fairchild FXMA2102.pdf

    Hi Robb,
It looks like you've really been working the details. Do you have specs for the unit? Input voltage range, ambient temperature, altitude range? Is it designed for a remote magnetometer or is it all integral to the unit?
The video was interesting but I had a little trouble keeping up with the text describing the features. It could be easier to follow if you had a good voiceover.

  10. Av8r_Sed added a post in a topic Stratux ADS-B receiver

Appareo has the Stratus ESG transponder priced at $2995 which includes the required GPS receiver function. My thought is to switch out and sell my Garmin 327 transponder. This ought to keep my costs below $3000 even if I have to add another GPS antenna.  My airport falls a mile outside the ORD Mode-C veil so I feel compelled to comply before the deadline.
I haven't seen any reviews or testimonials yet on this transponder so I'm not comfortable laying out the cash at the moment.

I don't know of any published minimum RPM numbers.  Stator windings are independent.  I'd recheck the plug gaps.  I think a lot of us use .018" as a gap.  Also might inspect your plug leads carefully and possibly renew them.  I never got any warm fuzzies on how they terminate on the coils especially.

My thanks to Doug for the heads up. I picked up 6 of them to use in a new parts paint booth. (Maybe I won't have to take off my welding shade in order to paint now).  There wasn't any rush at my local warehouse.  I really like the light quality and lightweight fixture.

    Hi Bucky,
I believe the 532 has the same water temperature operating limitations as the 582, which are minimum of 150 deg for takeoff and max of 175. Some folks install a thermostat and some tape off part of the radiator. The danger of low coolant temperature is rapid cooling and cold seizure when you throttle back. Of course this means you need to have confidence in the accuracy of your water temperature gauge too.

Looking again at your picture of the broken cluster, you're probably lucky this happened.  The two longeron tubes look like they were already cracked through and corroded before you started.  I'm guessing it spent significant time outside and the longerons sat filled with water.

I'm using the MGL E1 EMS. It would do what you're looking for plus RPM, settable hour meter and voltage monitor in a 3-1/8" round instrument. You can configure alarms as well. It's been very reliable and accurate for me.  The also have an E3 EMS with the same functionality in a smaller package.

I'm fixed for the controls and pushrods.  At some point in the future I need to figure out what to do about a set of wings, flaperons and lift struts.

Thanks Doug.  The file came through fine.  Glad to hear he's on the mend.
Ed, Here are the converted files in jpeg form.  I'm surprised you can't open a pdf though.  Is it a concern for viruses?

The file you added on Sept 1 appears to be blank to me.  Can you check it?  No problem seeing the others.

  22. Av8r_Sed added a post in a topic Kitfox Service Bulletin #45 Elevator Bolt Replacement

I wasn't aware of Service Bulletin 45 so I had to go check mine.  I got concerned after the "Jesus Bolt" comments.  Mine is just like Larry's.  The elevator idler bell crank (FBK-10) is supported by two tabs and an AN3-11 bolt.  The elevator push rod a rod end on each end.  Everything moves easily and I found no wear.
Denney Aerocraft must have made this change somewhere in the Model III production run.  I have two drawings from my construction manual that show the old and new way. One is marked Model 3, the other is Model 2.

  23. Av8r_Sed added a post in a topic AVID Fuel Tanks

I've been running exclusively Southern WI e-free mogas in my early 90's Kreemed Kitfox tanks with no leakage (knock on wood).  Like Larry did, I keep an eye out for any leakage or delamination of the Kreem.  I also test each batch I buy in case somebody mixed up and let some corn alky mix in.
I worked my career for a company in the refining industry and what everyone says is true.  What you get is a witches brew of blend components that just need to meet API specs.  The system works for autos and most other applications.  Keep the corn lobby and politicians out of it and things would improve.
