The tail skis are in production now. The testing I did was quite successful and the performance with the wheel through is pretty good.

You will need to talk to Brett at Airdale if you want one.

Unfortunately, our ski season is closing very quickly. 50° here today and the snow is melting very quickly. Last Saturday was my last ski flying day for this season. I've take my skis off.

Next project is preping the plane for the trip to Sun 'N Fun!!!

    Hey Leni!
Leni - I know you are still on your Lotus floats (and will probably stay on them), but how long into the spring are "you" Alaska flyers on skis?

  7. Av8r3400 added a post in a topic Got my Kitfox gear today!

I would try the Monokoat on the gear, why not. It's not structural or lift critical, only a faring.

If you can do this cheaper, why not?

Joey-- I just responded to you over at Kitfox. You could have given me a call, I just had mine all apart to put on the skis and new axles.

Remove the socket head cap screws holding the rotor to the wheelremove the bearing retaining cotter pin and nutslide the tire/wheel/hub assembly off the axle, leaving the rotor in place on the caliper (my rotors are snug in the wheel-tabs)the rotor can now be removed from the caliper and the rest disassembled

From a lesson I learned on my gear, take them all apart and put some anti-sleeze on the axles where they slide into the gear legs. This will help aid future maintenance work.

I'll side with Leni, keep the farings and cover the gear legs. From what I saw on Brett's landing gear jig (he has one that now fits Kitfox, Avid and Airdale), the legs are actually slightly shorter than the Avid gear, but they make up for it with the larger tires.

The 40 varies with the aircraft. If you are using a certified engine, and a known airframe, this time can be as little as 5 hours. If you are using some home made engine made from an old washing machine he may make the time 1,000 hours.

40 is kind of a standard for common experimental equipment. But, it's really at the discretion of the FAA representative.

Put on another ~4 hours today of ski flying. This is just too fun! We spent most of the day hoping from one lake to another testing (abusing) the new tail ski in as deep of snow as we could find. Eventually we found an area with avbout 10" of fluffy snow under a 1/4" hard crust. It works pretty good so far.

The guy with the champ in the photo has TrickAir skis (he is an A&P and works with them). Note the tail wheel on the Champ and on my Kitfox. They are both 6" Mauls, but mine has the ski attached.

Can I borrow it for a little while??

Joey, I agree. That will definitely spruce up your plane! Judging by the nose high attitude, you had to slow down quite a bit for that piece of Rans garbage to keep up, huh?

But-- What to my eyes behold there? Is that a Matco tailwheel on your little Avid??

WHERE IS THE REVIEW ON THIS??

Don't take my word for it - These are just the tank sizes that I know of. Anything could be possible, but a thorough check should be in order...

Your flight sounds like it could be a real adventure! (Gonna take any pictures??)

If you have a big tank and a small tank (and a wing locker!), I doubt you have 25 gallons on board. The big tank is around 13 gallons and the small one is around 6.

For a 582, 4.5 gph in cruise sounds close. Maybe one of the other guys can comment on this further...

For "American" gallons, the weight is 6 pounds per gallon.

(I don't know Imperial gallons, so my comments are only in "American" gallons.)

Now that's some pretty good airplane-porn...

Is that a "C" model? I like that tail shape much better than the round mark IV style.

That's too KOOL, Joey!! Gettin' high on Avid!

I was doing a bit of formation work yesterday, I was part of a high speed flight of three (1-Champ, 1-Chief, 1-Kitfox) to a local grass (snow) airport - 68C, look them up - for their weekly Friday lunch-feed.

(Funny how a lot of the local flying here revolves around food...)

Joey's met me, he knows I'd never pass up a good meal...

Though a six-pack of blonds is a good topic, especially with photos, back to the one intended...

I put another 2 hours on today to match the 2 yesterday and 2.5 on Thursday ski flying. Went to a local chili feed today then hopscotched my way home, from one little private strip to another. About an even dozen landings.

Lots of fun. Too much fun to remember to take photos or video...

There must be no standard for size labeling of ATV tires.

Mine are labeled as 20x7x8 and they are on 8" diameter (OEM Kitfox) rims.

I would have taken a 25x8x12 as going on a 12" diameter rim.

Jokes aside - These are 12 x 60. The production units will be 14 x 60. We will take your advise for a 72 length option seriously, thanks.

Our next priority is a tail ski which gives a wheel-through type of option or capability...

We also have some ideas on the shape of the plastic to help matters.

    More to come, for sure.

(the button is working properly now. Dunno - might be my antique laptop I'm using...)

I don't know if the Model IV Kitfox legs will just bolt onto a B/C Avid. Do they?
