    Could an Avid Amphibian (Catalina) be operated off it's belly in deep snow?

    I saw a video of Kenmore planes on straight floats (not just your Full Lotus inflate-o-floats, Leni) being operated off snow, once.

    Would this stress the hull too much? Could a sacrificial wear surface be added to the bottom?

    So-- We have two Avids and what is the third? Looks like a Supercub, maybe? The angle makes it look smaller.

    Are you going to stay with the Lotus Floats this winter or switch to regular skis?

    I got some more video this weekend. Some cool formation stuff with a friend and his son in their Champ and Minimax. I figured out how to get sound, too! I tried the higher res video to get rid of the weird prop effect, but it didn't help.

    NOW-- my laptop is on it's last legs. I'm trying to back up everything before it dies... More videos will probably have to wait until what I have is safe on a CD.

    Thanks. It's a helmet cam, but it is mounted on the front carry-through tube, at the top of the windshield inside the cockpit.

    I think this is very similar to my camera. Mine is model ATC18-08.

    I have been thinking about the Garmin 196, mostly due to reputation and cost. I've heard some good things about the Lowrance, but now I see they are going to stop making aviation units. This is the problem I have with the Magellan. It's an unsupported orphan.

    The latest AOPA rag has a write up about the new Garmin aero 500 series touch screen portables. It sounds like Garmin is going to stop making the tried and true 196 and 495/6 chassis to push the new touch screen units and the 695/6 units.

    GPS
    Open question to our membership and guests:

    What kind of GPS do you have or use in your planes and what do you like and dislike about it?



    I'm looking to replace the Magellan SkyNav 5000 in my plane that is no longer supported and doesn't work well, anyway. I'm considering a portable more than a traditional panel mount like the SkyNav or the mega $ 430/530.

    I was going to suggest at least scuffing the mating surfaces of the copper really well to let the hose have something rough to grip on...

    There is no sound on the camera itself. Pity.

    There's a guy out there called Taildrgfun, he mounted the camera on his gear leg, then strung a small mic into his headset, so that there is some engine sound, yet still allows for some narration through the intercom. I'd like to copy this setup. (Someday...)

    The "Strip" that isn't there (yet) is 1050' from the corner of the field to the driveway. I think it is do-able. I do need some more stick-time before I'd try it. However, I need to get the dead soybeans off it and a strip made and planted, first...

    Leni-- What you mention about the techniques of short landing are something that I really want to learn. I'm trying to find a source of information to teach me about these aspects of the art of bush-flying. Any suggestions?
