Randy,  With the plates located at the end of your wingtips you wont have to worry about this, but as a CAUTION to others thinking of experimenting by removing wingtips and replacing them with flat plates on the end of the wings this might apply:  "The ailerons (same as flaperons) should not extend to the end of the wingtips because the vortex there can induce a flutter on the ailerons."  "The Design of the Aeroplane" by Darrol Stinton.
Attaching a page of tip designs from his book that only deal with vortex and drag - nothing to do with STOL, as I understand it.  However, he does say that the wider the distance between tip vortexes the more lift is produced for shorter takeoff and slower landings, which is also the conclusion that long wings have more lift than short wings.  The "Finch" tips are in another book that is about drag and vortexes.

Welcome Steven.  I don't believe I have ever seen that kind of nose gear - I thought I knew about all of the different kinds for Avid and Kitfoxes.  Did you make the gear, or was that with the kit?

Good - Can you check with Kitfox for a price for a pair with aluminum frames?  I am having terrible headaches and ringing in ears from radiation - Just don't feel like doing any more than I have to right now.  EDMO

Joey,  Can you get to the inside of the fuselage tubes to measure all 3 sides for me?  Thanks, EDMO

Phillip,  I wish I knew if late model Kitfox aluminum triangle windows would fit your C - They fit the early model 1-4 Kitfoxes too.  I have a new, unused, pair that I would sell for half of new price, whatever that is.  EDMO

Mark,  Thanks for the update on the honesty of the company - Hope you had enough money left to put some door photos on here.  Congrats on the completion.  EDMO

Thanks for the info - I don't need headphones to hear the high-pitched sound in my ears - I had hearing tests in a booth when I retired and know that there are high and low frequencies I don't hear.  One is the door alarm on our fridge - I cant hear it at all, but wife and daughter tell me that it works - fortunately, they also put a light on the door that I can see.  I know most of the aids for hearing impaired since I raised two impaired children, one partially deaf and the other totally deaf until she got a cochlear implant.  EDMO

  9. EDMO added a post in a topic Hanging from the rafters

I believe that trying to do a W/B on a Kitfox 5 would not be accurate with it hanging by the wing pins:  1.  The pins are about 2"+ aft of the leading edge of the wings.  2.  The arm of the axles might be about 4" aft from leading edge, and this might be a huge miscalculation of moment?  3.  tail would have to be suspended with weight on the tail axle and the cable directly in line with the axle center.  Much easier and better to do W/B with scales.  BTW - How do you do a W/B with floats without amphib wheels?  EDMO

  10. EDMO added a post in a topic JB from NC

JB,  I am sure that Doug Holly can give you detailed info on getting a kit plane registered, but you do not have to be the "sole builder" to do that.  You need a bill of sale for the kit, some kind of documented information of how much, if any, has been done by other builders, (builder's logs and photos are best), and info if any part of it has been built by a commercial agency other than the original kit-maker, and your building logs and photos.  If the total "Amateur building" is at minimum 51% or greater, no matter how many "builders" were involved, then you should not have any problem registering it as the final builder/owner.

How do they test for tinnitus?  I have had it most of my life, and lost some high and low tones in Radio work in Artillery unit in Army.  When I was a child, I had these "radio waves" going thru my head and was afraid to say anything because people might think I was going crazy, or something!  I had bad earaches until I was about 15.  I have had the sounds, on & off, most of my life - especially agitating when trying to go to sleep - I have them right now.  I worry about side effects from any possible drug treatments, since all drugs have side effects.  EDMO

JB,  There is a new owner of Avid Aircraft trying to get the business restarted.  This may take some time, but he is on this site and is gearing up to make kits and parts.  Just something for you to consider if cheaper building/buying/flying than current Kitfox is your desire.  Kitfox outsold Avid in the early days, but you will probably find more current active Avid flyers on here than Kitfox.  EDMO

  13. EDMO added a post in a topic Matco Axles

How long are the Matco axles you bought?  I see that they have 3 lengths of the 3/4 axles.  Were they same length as old Avid axles?  Are these for the Douglas wheels?
    Thanks,  EDMO

You can always use aluminum sides with the flat Lexan riveted or bolted over the top of them.  EDMO

Mark,   How about renting or borrowing a big concrete saw with an abrasive blade to do the cutting with?  They cut thru some big rebars and bridge bolts with them.  EDMO

  17. EDMO added a post in a topic Grove gear needed

I agree with Jim on this.  You need to have the wheels location nearly the same as original Avid gear or be faced with nose-over.
"Another thing to consider is where will the wheels end up with this gear.  If they are to far back, you might go over on your nose the first time you get on the brakes."  EDMO

  18. EDMO added a post in a topic Grove gear needed

Wyonate,  I am butting in again, but I see that the axle to fuselage height is 14"+, and Avid / Kitfox gear is normally 22" to 24" for taildraggers, and 16" for nosedraggers - You might want to add about 8" or more under the fuselage to get more prop clearance and AOA for takeoff.   I used the 22" for my nosedragger.  That would make a nice footwell like the Airdale, or storage room too.  EDMO

I edited my post and added photo above - saying again, "Mine is a nosedragger".   The radius blocks are in Grove catalog, but I might have some depending on the width of the gear.  EDMO

  20. EDMO added a post in a topic Grove gear needed

FWIW - I called Grove about using radius blocks and having them about 28 or 26" width compared to the 32" width of the Kitfox mounts and Robbie Grove told me that it wouldn't make enough difference to worry about.  I added another heavy crosstube about 10 or 12" ahead of where the strut attach tube was located (just under the vertical tubes on the longerons) and welded in some 3/4" x 2" wide rectangular tubes to attach the radius blocks.  Here is a photo.   Of course, mine is a nosedragger!   I would not put the gear flat against the fuselage as is shown in the above photos.  Hope this helps.  EDMO

If you can return the Matco axles I have a set of new Kitfox axles for sale.  You know the price, but I don't without looking it up.  I can measure them to the nearest .001" if you need that.  EDMO
