I think that Suberavid has new spars, so no holes to worry about.  If I had strut fittings already on the wings and wanted to make the struts longer I would leave the old spar fittings riveted in place and maybe just remove the outer part that connects to the struts.  Then you have to make sure you have an insert in place above the new fittings too.  EDMO

FACEBOOK - BS - NOT HAPPENING!
My wife talks to her family on facebook - For some (unknown to me) reason, she wanted another facebook page and used my name and phone number.  Immediately, I told her to delete it, as I would never use facebook and didn't want my name on it.  Evidently, it takes two weeks to delete a page, so I am getting text messages on my phone about people wanting to get on my page.  I don't do text messages either, so don't waste your time trying to contact me either way.  I am always generally available for a PM on this site, and I really don't like phone calls too.  I've had headaches from Chemo and got one after the brain and chest radiation today.  Sorry if this has bothered some of you.  EDMO

I have 4 of the MC4 that have the half-round bottoms.  I know that none of my pedals have the tabs for them.  EDMO

I may have the only rotary table that can be clamped in a milling machine or drill press vise.  I made it from scratch in my shop in order to keep from removing the 90 lb. vise from the mill when I wanted to use the rotary table.  Rotary tables are $pendy - guess I would sell this for $500 obo plus shipping.  EDMO

Randy,  The extra 3'+ wingspan should help your STOL a lot, IMO.  I believe that with the .065" wall spars I would have moved the strut fittings outboard more than standard Avid and made new struts, but with 5' JUST inserts you might not need that - Or, do you have .083" wall spars?   Good posts on the wing building.  EDMO

I don't know what "new style master cylinders" are?  I don't know if these pedals have the tab for the MCs welded on them - I haven't looked at them for a while and need to do that soon.  They were for earlier models, KF1 or 2.  I sold the KF4 pedals.  I don't know how I will feel for the next two weeks of radiation.  I've got a set of 4 Cessna pedals I would take $100 plus $15 shipping to U.S.A.   EDMO

Leni,  I am all for tip experiments.  I hope that someone can give some actual measured comparisons of same plane, same pilot, same weight, same winds, and at least two different tips.  Sounds like the Avid (Finch?) tips that turn up at trailing edge do a better job of shedding the vortexes cleanly away from the wings, making them stronger, (what they are designed for), which should help the performance of that plane even though it affects the one behind it.  Maybe they are not the best for formation flying?  EDMO

    Looking good Barry!
Leni,  I am never against experimenting - I don't have any info that says the flat plates help STOL better than other tips.   It certainly wouldn't help if it makes the wings shorter by 2 regular tip-lengths.  I have studied this subject a lot, and believe the most important thing for STOL is wing area, profile, and VGs.   The short-wing Pipers proved that squared Hoerner-style tips helped them get off the ground quicker than the round tips because it added wing area.  I would like to see some positive results comparing the flat plates with other tips on the same plane, same wings.  When someone asks my opinion, I give it.  That's all there is to this.
Remember the Kitfox with the Big Radial engine?  Guess that was them Experimenting with sales back then - so what are they doing now with the STi?   I hear that it has a thicker rib for more lift which would give better STOL disregarding the tips.

Paul,  My Maule 4C had the STC Atlee Dodge "Bush Gear" on it with the Hydro -? shocks   My memory is shot!  Cant remember how much weight it added, but it was a lot and was so strong you couldn't hurt it.  Best thing ever for Piper and Maule, IMO.
Randy,  Your new "extended" wings - are they standard Avid 29'10", or longer?   EDMO

Randy,  I don't know how many noticed in the video of the Kitfox STi, but they also had VGs the whole length of the wings - I would bet that they did more good than the fences for STOL.  Zenith also replaced their slats with VGs and got similar performance.  Didn't want to cover up your questions for Sioux, but had to put those two facts on here.  EDMO

I wonder if that would work if you get some of the Oratex glue on some fabric where you don't want it?  When you can, would you try that on a scrap piece of fabric and post the results?   Thanks,  EDMO

  15. EDMO added a post in a topic FIREWALL BLANKET???

Randy,  For certified factory planes, the FAA requires .016" thick stainless or .018" Galvanized.  Of course in an Experimental you don't have to do that, but if that is what they think is "fireproof", then that is what I would use - No need to use any thicker.  It might actually be lighter, considering the weight of the blanket.   Post some weight comparisons if you can.
I cant tell you which is easiest to work with - 302, 304, or 304 Half-Hard, seems to be the offerings in Spruce, if I remember right.   EDMO

They biggest downside I see is the 3/4" axles - Guess if you don't mind replacing bent axles, then they are OK.  I prefer 1.25 or 1.5" axles, especially for bush flying.  Matco makes an adapter plate for adding another set of calipers, or you can make your own plates.  EDMO

    FIREWALL BLANKET???
I have never understood why thin metal was used for the firewalls, and then covered on the engine side with a blanket which ends up looking like it was dragged thru a grease and dirt pit until it rots.  I guess most builders took the easy way and used what the Kitmaker supplied.  IMO, I think a stainless firewall would be much better, safer, and easier to keep clean, and not cost much more - or maybe cheaper, considering the cost of the blanket.  If you want some sound-deadening material you could put it on the cabin side of the firewall.  Just my 2c worth of thinking - Your thoughts are welcome.  EDMO

TJay,  The fence in the middle of the wings is used to prevent boundary layer separation, usually located about 2/3 of span - Much the same as VGs.  Some older planes had them and others used a notch or step in the leading edge or other designs.  EDMO

Randy,  I think if Kitfox had some really great "Bragging Rights" for the new "cool looking" wing and fences, then we would have seen some magazine articles on the testing and comparisons between those and the Riblett wings, like same plane, same pilot, same weights, with BOTH KINDS of wings and STOL FIGURES and CRUISE SPEEDS - Of course, they not only added fences, they used a different airfoil, and that might have made most of the differences?
Maybe you can give us some figures when you test yours both ways?  Good luck and Best Wishes - Glad you are trying something that has only been talked about.  EDMO

How about telling us the "trick" you found?  I think that both the green and clear glues may be a product of 3M, but not sure about that.  I know that there is a difference in the procedures for applying them.  I have used the Stewarts glue.  EDMO

There is nothing wrong with the Magnum as it was designed, like a larger Avid - It just needs to be built, flown and enjoyed, IMO.
But there were or are some ultralight Winglets for sale on ebay - Not sure about how that would work!  EDMO

Ron,  I don't know what Kitfox has discovered with any testing they have done on using the flat plates.  I have a skeptical approach to this because sometimes "gimmicks" are used to boost sales.
I am not an engineer, but I have read more than one book on Aerodynamics, and I stayed at Holiday Inn Express one night!  ;<)  As I understand it, the winglets that Boeing, Rutan, gliders, ultralights, and others are using make the wing perform like it had a longer span without adding length to the wings, and a longer span means more lift to get them off of the ground quicker (STOL?), and I guess they produce less drag to save fuel.
One thing I read about the flat plates, which are actually old technology tried many years ago, was that unless the plates have a height equal to the wing chord they don't help prevent the high pressure from the underside from coming over the tip and producing a down pressure on the topside, the vortex producer, actually decreasing STOL ability.  I have never understood if that height would be half on top and half on the bottom of the plates, but guess that info must be somewhere.  Tests have shown that the vortex is strongest at high-lift situations, such as on takeoffs.
The one thing that I have read that would decrease drag on the Hoerner type tips, and possibly on your Finch tips, is that if they are angled about 6 or 7 degrees with the trailing edge being a longer span than the leading edge, that they will produce less drag by shedding the vortex farther away from the wing, but how much difference I don't know.  But to quote Leni, and maybe some others:  "What difference does it make on our draggy planes?"   EDMO

If flat plates were the best thing for lift, and reduced drag, don't you think they would be on all Boeing planes?  Evidently, the Boeing engineers know that winglets do a better job than any other kind of wing tips.  Maybe that is why Bert Rutan put them on his designs?  I rest my case.  Oh yes, I think the Finch tips would win over flat plates for overall performance.  I've got a design book written by an engineer and test pilot that goes into a lot of technical detail about all the tips but I hate to try to post it all on here.  EDMO

Mark,  I have a pair of pedal torque tubes that are factory fresh and powder coated, but I have not looked at them to see if they have the reinforcements added.   Check Kitfox for prices and ask if they are reinforced, and then get back to me on this.  EDMO

Ron,  All I am trying to say, is that if you make the wing shorter by eliminating the tips, then you are going to lose lift curve which hurts STOL.  That's like making a Speedwing out of a STOL or HH wing.
In regard to the new Kitfox wing with flat plates, I don't know if the wing was lengthened to make up for the removal of the tips.  This may be a lot of sales hype, like Cessna used when they put the slanted tail on their birds - It looked a lot sleeker or sexier than the upright tail but was not as efficient according to what I have read.
I have some info on flat plates, but it has more to do with vortexes and drag than lift, so I wont clutter the STOL conversations here with that.
