  1. THANKS TO ALL OF AFF, Jim, Doug, and others who have shared concerns.  You make me feel better having you as an extended, caring, family.  I am weak, but they tell me that a recovery day is coming someday.  I have more tests in November and I will try to give you some info by December.  Too shaky to type.  E-CARD IS A NICE GESTURE, but your posts are enough, really Thanking all of you.  Stay tuned, ;<)  edmo

  2. The rest of the story (as Paul Harvey would say)  Nobody came through with one I could borrow or buy, so I got one off of ebay for less than half what I expected to pay at Mc Master Carr.  Actual Helicoil brand and everything.  Did what I had to do with it, and that worked out fine.  Today I'm up in the hangar, and looking for some stuff for the Kitfox 4 I'm rebuilding.  What do I find in the box I'm looking in but a 10 MM 1.25 pitch thread helicoil set.  And not a cheap set, it has taps for bottoming holes as well as through holes.  Real good installation tool as well.  Ain't that the way it goes.  I probably will never need the one I bought again, and now I have 2 sets.  Why didn't I remember that was there before?  I'm sure I saw it at one time when I went through those boxes......Not sure if I'm happy that I found it or not:unsure:  JImChuk

Welcome to my world Jim!  Wife keeps reminding me that I have so many tools I cant find them and of course I buy another.  ;<)  EDMO

  3. Thanks for asking fellows - I try to drop in every few days to see what is happening - Bottom Line:  Not doing any better - Feel so tired - Chemo was recoverable about 2 to 3 weeks after each session, but Radiation sickness and weakness seems to be everlasting.  I think they fried my brain!  ;<)  Cheers, EDMO

  4. Here are the wings I mentioned on team kitfox yesterday.  Not barnstormers, ebay.  I didn't real the whole tread, but my memory says the wings are longer than HH wings.  they use 2 jury struts for instance.   Also count how many ribs out the strut attachment bracket is. JImChuk

Last ebay post lowered the price to $3500 obo.  Cat wings are in-between Avid STOL/HH and Avid Magnum.  33'?  EDMO

  5. I've seen several barns burn down when the hay self-combusted.  Donno if it was damp, wet, or too green.  We never stored hay in the barn.  EDMO

  6. TJay,  Not trying to push any sales, but think it might be in your interests to junk or sell those MCs and go with another set which use a reservoir.  I can sell a set of Matco for $100 shipped or Grove for $200, with money back, cost of rebuild for Matco, or exchange if they don't work - Main thing is matching total length of MCs when extended.  I don't know if I have a reservoir I can find, but they are cheap.  Just trying to help you get that bird flying!  EDMO

Now that you talk about that I do have a set of mc-4 laying somewhere Ill see if I can find them somewhere. And if they work. I bought them through Wentworth aircraft. If not ill let you know. Which are better Matco of Grove?

I cant tell you which is better - Grove costs more - probably cheaper to overhaul Matcos?  EDMO

  8. Okay.  What ya got, Ed?

Larry,  Give me some time to compile a list and I will send you a PM.  EDMO

  9. Anyone in NMLRA?  I have some rare ones to sell.  Send me a PM.   EDMO

  10. Thanks for the reply Ed.  I found a helicoil set on ebay for $25 so I bought it.  The guy has a bunch of new old stock stuff that he is selling.  Hopefully it's not some Chinese junk.  I didn't want to make the holes any bigger than they already are.  JImChuk

Jim,  Either way, the holes have to be tapped out larger, unless you are just replacing a stripped helicoil.  I have several boxes of solid inserts, but sure that they are all American threads.  EDMO

  11. Jim,  Unless there is a reason you cant use solid inserts instead of helicoils, like the walls not being thick enough, I highly recommend them.  They don't need the High $$ tap or tool, just the next size up for either standard or metric threads, and they have locktite already on the threads, or you can get them with little "fingers" that you drive home after screwing the insert in - They never come loose or strip out.  Check Grainger or MSC.  EDMO

  12. Hey EDMO, I will not use any killing bait/pesticide as they tend to kill our beautiful owls we enjoy very much.....Also when the rodends die and decompose it releases these raticides in our groundwater..

I found the mothballs to smell bad enough that the rodends just don't come close without doing any harm....

    I know I am a soft tree hugger....you got me uncovered:rolleyes:

The mice I poison die on my concrete floor.  No harm to any ground water. No owls in my hanger to eat the dead mice. I'm a tree hugger to. Save a tree and wipe your ass with a spotted owl.

I had the same results - My hangers/shop are sealed enough to keep most everything out - If a mouse slips in, it never gets out alive!

Don't know much about owls, except that I was in a boat going to my duck blind one night and had to take a leak - when I stepped onto the bank I came face to face with a Great Horned Owl - We both quickly retreated, him flying just over my head - That was the last time I offered to get out of a boat at night to piss!  ;<)  EDMO

  13. Since I had a rat and mice taking my fuselage as living quarters I found that mothballs keeps them away....Never found out how they got into my fuselage as it's an Avid Catalina floatplane....watertight but not mouse tight it seems..go figure.

DECON makes a big difference - One pack by each wheel - AS long as there are no cats or dogs around to eat it.  EDMO

  14. TJay

Georgeous plane.  Perhaps this was asked earlier but it appears you have very little dihedral.  Only curious, is this by design or your implementation in the build?

    Phil

Dihedral is  set to 1 degree. Its just where I think they look the best.

That's What the manual says.  EDMO

  15. What masters do you have?  sounds to me like it time for a "rebuild"  if its the MC1 masters (matco with built in resi) then its pretty easy to pull them apart and look at them.  The little rubber pad on the bottom is barely more than a bad joke and might have come loose from the bottom of the plunger.

    :BC:

No Idea what they are here is a pic.

TJay,  Matco might help you identify them - rebuild kits are cheap.  I wish I could help since I have sets of Piper, Grove, MC3 and 2 lengths of MC4, but all of them have external reservoirs.   None have been tested.  EDMO

The MC5 also has the resi on the top - Are these an "improved version"?  Maybe larger bore?   EDMO

  17. Holy crap Ed!    Your like a plexiglass polishing Ninja!!!

Man, you're hired!   I'm sending ya all my plexi off my plane....    and a couple snowmo helmet face shields too!!

    :BC:

No Thanks!  I made an "A" in that class and QUICKLY RETIRED from Plexi-Polishing!  ;<)  EDMO

  18. I was eyeing the kits at ACS.  The description sure sounds good....

    Anyone tried this?

    http://m.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/cspages/scratchoff_1.php?clickkey=9511

We used one of the kits in Av School - I cant tell you which one, but it worked good - with lots of work from coarsest grit down to micro-fine.  EDMO

More info on ACS micro-polishing kit - We were given a 1/4" thick piece of about 3" x 8" plexiglass which had been rough-sawed - We filed and scraped the edges and then started with the kit - The final outcome had to be SQUARE and good enough looking thru both vertical edges of the 3" wide sides to read a newspaper with no scratches showing.  EDMO

  19. do NOT have the cabane vee like that where it gives a straight pull through.. Do a search for gear on here and see the number of reasons why.

Please learn from everyone else's mistakes and do not do the same just for ease of fabrication unless you want the gear and fuse buckled and your plane wrecked.

    :BC:

Agree X2 - Also the 55" is not near wide enough - Do some research on Avids, Kitfoxes, Grove gear, and the Cabane gear that others are making.  EDMO

  20. Thanks for the info Ed.  I'll have a look at my manual.  I was thinking about welding in hinges like are used on the elevator.  One near each end of the trim tab with 1/8" pins.  I should have looked at my manual before I posted this question.  I see that the trim tab feature was an option on the 4.  JImChuk

They used piano hinges.  May have been an option on KF2 - I haven't checked my KF3 for one.  EDMO
