I bought a bigger plane, the Kitfox is a bit short of space for camping gear. I bought this 1959 Piper PA-22/20 with a seaplane door, leading edge cuff and extended wings, it should be a decent bush plane. Won't be quite as economical to operate as the Kitfox, but if I take out the back seat it should be able to haul a lot of camping gear.

Yeah hopefully the wife doesn't look at the credit card statement to closely this month... I'll try and post some pics and video once I get this bird in the air again.

Thanks guys, yeah it all kind of snowballed. I started out looking for a turn coordinator and a heading indicator so I could fly at night, and discovered that the dynon Efis was cheaper and lighter. Then I decided to go with the Dynon Ems to take care of the engine instruments. Then the old gps would have looked out of place, and I didn't like the look of the old toggle switches and breakers, and before I knew it I was redoing the whole works.

I'll be doing a new weight and balance once I get everything installed, I am indeed hoping that it will be a couple of pounds lighter than before. It's getting really close to being my dream airplane, I just need a set of bushwheels, a decent tailwheel, and an inflight adjustable prop.

    A new panel for C-FSXT
I'm doing some major upgrades to my Model IV-1050. I'm installing a new 912ULS engine and decided to redo my panel at the same time. I recently got my night rating so I wanted a panel that would be capable of flying at night.

The radio also didn't work very well so I decided to start from scratch and gut the whole panel and rewire everything.

I installed a Dynon D6 Efis and a D10 Ems and a Garmin 695 for navigation. Power distribution is being handled by a Composite Designs light sport power panel.

Here's what the panel looked like before:

And here's how it looks now:

Thanks guys, I did find the banjo fittings in the Rotax parts catalog so I will order a couple of those and fabricate some new lines. It does look like the guys at TS flight lines do nice work though.

Kitfox w/912 - fuel hoses too short
    Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of upgrading my Kitfox Model IV from the 80HP 912 to the 100HP model.

I just picked up a brand new 912ULS earlier this week. The problem I am having is that the new 912's come with factory made fuel hoses with banjo fittings on the ends, and because the engine mount configuration on the Model IV's require me to swap the intake manifold from the left side to the right, that carbs are now farther apart and the fuel hoses are too short.

One option is for me to use the old fuel pump and carbs from my 80HP engine, but it would be a shame not to use the new carbs that came with the new engine.

Another option would be for me to use the new carbs but mount them with the throttle linkages inboard, if I did this the fuel hoses would probably reach. I don't like this idea though because it would make inspecting the throttle linkages and syncing the carbs more difficult.

The best option in my mind would be to fabricate a new fuel hose assembly similar to the one supplied by the factory, but with longer hoses. In order to do this, I either need to find a source for the banjo fittings at the carb connection, or find a hose barb fitting that threads into the carb instead of the banjo bolt.

Have any of you guys ran into this issue? If so what did you do to solve it?
I've attached photos of the factory supplied fuel hose assembly that I need to extend.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
    Randy

I'm up in Fort McMurray right now but will be home on Wednesday night, hopefully will go flying on Thursday morning, weather permitting. I have to stay within 25 nm of Red Deer for the first 5 hours but will probably be down at Innisfail practicing on the grass again.

The Kitfox is WAY more fun than the Pacer, especially for the type of flying I want to get into. It's like comparing a sports car to a pickup truck. The Kitfox accelerates faster, takes off and lands way shorter, has a much faster roll rate, etc. Plus the Kitfox burns a lot less fuel and is cheaper to maintain since I can work on it myself. The Pacer cruised a little faster and could haul quite a bit more but the Kitfox is a lot more fun and suits my type of flying perfectly.

Thanks Norm, did you end up selling your Avid?

The prop is ground adjustable, from what I understand it has the capability of being converted to an in flight adjustable with the addition of an electric motor, brushes, wiring, switch, circuit breaker, etc.

I was seeing about 110 mph indicated, no idea how accurate my airspeed indicator is though.

Thanks for the info, I didn't even know they made 31" airstreaks, the website just shows 26" and 29" versions.

For now my typical mission will be flights to nearby grass strips, but as my tailwheel skills improve I am interested in trying some off airport work. By the time I am ready for that I should have saved up enough money to afford some Airstreak tires and a beefy tailwheel.

    Hi Ed,

Yeah some 29" Airstreaks are definitely on my wishlist for some day, but I need to brush up on my piloting skills first.

Thanks for the heads up on the gear, what is the preferred gear for rough/off-strip operation?

    Introducing C-FSXT
    Hi guys,

Just wanted to post a few pics of my new plane... it's been a long process getting it imported into Canada but I finally received my Certificate of Airworthiness and took her up for the first flight earlier this week.

The plane is a 1995 Kitfox Model IV with a Speedster tail powered by an 80 HP Rotax 912. I bought the plane from a Team Kitfox forum member in Massachussetts. I went on a massive road trip across the continent to pick it up in May. Since then I have been going through the import/MDRA inspection process.

The previous owner had some nice vinyl "Kitfox" graphics on the side, but I had to remove them to install the Canadian registration letters.

Now my goal is to learn to fly it well. I took it up on Tuesday and flew it from Red Deer, AB down to Innisfail to practice some landings on the grass before attempting to land on pavement. The landings were passable but I definitely was a little rusty. It flew great though, and I plan on doing a lot of flying in this little airplane.

    Thanks,
    Randy

Yep I work at a remote plant site north of Fort McMurray in Alberta. Now I need to find a plane that doesn't need a bunch of work. Anybody got an Avid or a Kitfox with a 912 for sale?
