The Kitty project is NOT dead. I am currently working on a Porsche 944 which I will sell when done. There is a 1981 X-11 project to wrap up. Then the car hoist will only be needed for repair jobs. I can do work on the Kitty again.

This is the 2nd Catalina I brought north from Florida.  There is a number of parts I will use.

I am back. In the years since, the project got packed in by my son and wife. Too much junk. A few years later, I had another barn built with a 40 x 60 shop and goat stalls . I moved the Catalina to the shop. The small stuff was put in the office next to the goat stalls. The plans WERE on the top shelf. My wife allowed the goats to gain access while I was sick. The goats literally ate the plans. Now, just 2 weeks ago, Iocated a ratty Catalina in Florida.  I bid on it and got it. I took Amtrak from Harrisburg Pa. to Orlando. I rented a Uhaul truck and loaded the bird. It took a total of 5 days from departure to arrival.  I have some grandsons coming out tomorrow to unload it. The adventure continues.

I have been in the Kitty, I rotated it level, extended the gear, put an auto jack under each gear, and used a ladder to get me up to where I could step on the sponson. The banopy frame is attached, so I closed it to check on clearances, with me. I got a photo with my not so smart phone, but it doesn't want to send it to my computer. I hate that phone.

I have since trimmed the left sponson again, and I finally got the proper ground to sponson clearance. I am currently doing the fiberglass work to finish the left one. I have to make aluminum covers for the side openings on the sponson, so I can remove the wheels. I will take photos of it with the Nikon, so I can easily post them.

I have gone through the knee spacer of last May 31, and the total replacement of  Aug. 20. The surgeon and my Internal Disease Doctor told me to do NOTHING until at least Feburary of this year. I complied. I then waited until it was warm enough, thanks to global warming (yeah right). I returned to the shop today, I had to clear away junk that my wife, and workers on my barn , had deposited just inside the door. I took 3 photos with my stupid smart phone, but it refused to send them to my computer. I started to check the left sponson to the photo that I have of Avid's final prototype. The depth of the sponson is close to that of the photo. It needs a little reshaping inboard, near the main hull.

Trackwelder, did you ever get the info you needed? If not, let me know.

I got the latest new knee on Aug. 20. I am now doing the P.T. thing. I am allowed to do stuff at the end of January. To answer the preceding question, I will measure the top thickness, when I can get to the barn. My manual is an earlier one.

My right knee became infected, AGAIN, last Saturday. I spent from Sunday through Thursday in the hospital. I have a temporary antibiotic spacer in my leg, instead of a knee. It is to be replaced in 10 weeks or so. I WILL RETURN TO WORK ON THE KITTY!

My wife was given this  photo by her friend, who had gone along on the trip. The oversized sponsons as purchased are evident in this shot.  It sure doesn't look that way now.

I am working on the Kitty as time allows. The farm has a 4 acre lawn. I have 5 goats (not GTOs). I belong to a Corvette club and DO attend the functions. Sunday is for Church, and visiting my parents.
I am currently STILL working on the left sponson, trying to get it right. Currently, this means working on the wheel well. My advice to anyone who gets an un built  Catalina kit, DO NOT change it to the latest configuration. Keep the sponsons stock. Here are the 4 newest photos.

I started going to the barn, again. The knee is still healing, but I started cleaning the shop.

I have been working on reshaping the right sponson. I am now doing the left sponson, using templates that I made off of the right one.

I have been working on the water rudder, but my 30+ year old Kmart (really is) 1/2 inch drill press died. Next week is payday, so off to Harbor Freight for a drill press, and Sears for a saber saw. I am currently working on replacing the hinges that were ground off the fuselage by the previous owner. I will also start on the sponson reshaping process, since these are fatter than those on 157AB. This gives me almost NO ground clearance. They were done by the TLAR method. That looks about right. They weren't right.

More photos as the work progresses. I think the first owner made the sponsons too deep. I need dimensions from a late model owner.

The later Catalina photos I have seen show one, but not clear enough to do anything with. The manual says to retract the water rudder before take off. Thanks.

The front seat back and bottom is in. I have assembled the throttle assembly that gets riveted in (and is prewelded on newer birds). The long cable that goes from that assembly to the engine is missing. I think it is 12 or 13 feet long, but i'm not sure. I wish I could buy one. I still need info on the water rudder. I wish the instructions were complete. The complete parts list would be a help as well. The used 582 FINALLY showed up. The seller had to ship it twice. Yellow Freight sent it to heaven knows where, then returned it to him. OOPS (UPS) got it here, but destroyed the shipping container. It will get overhauled after everything else is done.

The rear seat sheet metal is in. I found a bunch of stuff that I believe might be for the water rudder. I could sure use that part of the directions. It is missing.

I am broke after having to replace my computer tower. It had eaten 2 hard drives in 3 years. I am still working on the Cat. I finally finished all the retract mods for the electric motor setup. I'm now working on the front floor, mounting the rudder pedals, next it get's mounted in the fuselage. I have started the sheet metal parts for the interior. I could use the original parts list as none came with this bird.

I spent the last week at Sentimental Journey at Lock Haven, Pa. with family and friends. The usual vendors were NOT there this year, except for Univair. I ordered bolts as per the instructions, got them Monday, TOO LONG. I spent Tuesday on the road searching for tools and stuff for the bird. I got some fancy drill bits, some spacers on order, and 2 digital calipers. I finally found the rest on line, just before I wrote this. It's all on order.

I got the gear drilled as per the plans. There is another glitch. Since the gear retracts forward, now, the actuating arm goes through a much larger arc. The bolt heads now hit the cross tube. I guess I will have to get the heads milled by 1/3.
