Joey  you might want to take a picture of the firewall,it was mod for the hose on the back of the bluehead. The plumbing on a greyhead is a little different. IThe bluehead can be installed without changing the firewall, but you have to chang the pluming and the hoses will run too close to the exhaust manifold.

what Chris said. If you take that little screw out it can be a real pain to git back in before all the oil in the reservoir runs out on the floor. Then you wonder did I just introduce an air bubble in the system.

sometimes I have to burp my cooling system after draining it. You get a bubble that just won't come out.Take the radiator cap off and lift the tail as high as you can. might help or not, but it doesn't cost any thing.

Man, you're right on time!    After 20 years of running gas through my old fiberglass tank it started leaking about a month ago.  I've been researching everything there is to find about fixing and replacing and was just about to start to cut my tank open when I came across this post.  Needless to say, I'm very interested.  If you're going to put price and pictures on here that's fine.  If not, I'll email you.

    Just let me know.  thanks

Hey Joey , did you get my PM?.  I still have the copy of the Sept 1992 Sport Pilot magazine I"ll send you.  It's got the Avid Mark IV on the front.  The article is by John Conrad.  Maybe you could put that article on here too.  I'm not sure how to do it.  Let me know how to get it to you, if you'd like it.

Thats how I do it on my avid. Fill it, put the cap back on and lift the tall as hi as I can, you will hear it bubble, might take 2 or 3 times and it's full.

I had the same problem on the last avid I built, but I saw the problem when I put the tank in the wing with the cap to the wing tip the twist in the tank was wrong. I had to move both cap and drain. Not hard with the tank out of the wing. I cut a square.around the cap, when you have the cap out add a lip 3/4" or so on the under side. Then you cut the same size square where you want the cap to be slip the cap in the new hole a little resin and pull the cap up tight,I had the tank upside down until the resin was dry. Then a little glass on top and you're done. Hope this made sense.

Oh yeah I forgot. I had two tanks and they both had the same problem.

    My first flying machine
I'll see if I can post a couple pictures. Let's see if anyone knows what this is.
After my first two bad landings, I put over 100 hours on this thing with no further mishaps.
I sold it to make room for my Avid. Wish I still had it, it was a lot of fun.

  19. jlpeet added a post in a topic Installing 582 bluehead in Mark IV

After looking at this thing for a couple days I decided to leave the bypass hose at the back of the motor. that's the way it came out of the box. and to move it would have been a plumbers nightmare to get the radiators plumbed, so I cut a notch in the firewall, bent up a piece of sheet metal and pop riveted it in. It actually makes the firewall a little stronger. and now for the exhaust and muffler. The bosses on the blue head are a little different than a gray head so the mounting bracket will have to be changed a little bit , but I'm sure I can work that out. I am in need of some new (not exactly sure what you call it) the rubber belting material that lets the muffler move. If anyone knows where to get some, I'd appreciate any information. I was going to take a picture of the firewall cut into it but I had to put the motor in and take it out several times just for measurements. When it went in the last time and everything fit, I didn't want to take it out just to take a picture.

    thanks

Installing 582 bluehead in Mark IV
I was wondering if anyone on this forum has installed a 582 bluehead in a Mark IV? I tried putting my new 582 in my plane this morning and found there is not enough room for the bypass hose between the motor and firewall. so what do you do? cut a notch in the firewall to make room for the bypass hose? or route the bypass hose around the front of the motor and go into the front of the water pump? then you would need 180 turn in the hose to get back to the radiators.

If anyone has done this, I'd appreciate some help. pictures would be nice too.

    thanks

thanks for the warm welcome. I've looked at a couple of Avid sites but you guys seem to fit in with my political incorrectness.

    Joey:
I noticed that the bypass hose will rub on one of the motor mounts. I think the motor mounts are different on the Mark IV than what you have. I haven't been flying as much in the last couple of years because I haven't had anyone to go flying with. It will be nice to meet some new people and have some new places to go.

    New Guy
I didn't really know where to put this so I'll try here. I've been reading the forum for about a month and figured it was time to introduce myself. My name's Jim. I live in Valley Springs, CA at the edge of the sierra foothills. I have a Mark IV and I'm in the process of installing a new 582. I might have a few questions since it's a little different than my old grey head. I bought my Avid in 1992 and got my air worthiness cert in 1994.
