  1. marksires added a post in a topic Getting started/setup for Welding?

I have a Hobart Mig and a Hobart Tig.  Hobart is made by Miller, and the ones that look identical are identical except for the color and the price tag.
For our birds you need Tig, Mig is not approved for aircraft unless you are a manufacturer and have an approved process.  Yes, I know it's experimental so that doesn't really apply, but the rule exists for a reason, and a beginning welder should respect it.
Tig will need a bottle of argon, so be sure to price getting a cylinder also - some places you have to buy and exchange, some places you have to lease, just depends on your supplier.
You could also use gas welding.  More expensive in the long run, but cheaper to start out.  It shouldn't cost much to get a 30amp 220 outlet put in your workshop/garage.  The 110v welders aren't worth the amount they cost in my experience.
I did one of the EAA Tig welding seminars, it was a good introduction.  I also did a continuing education class at my local community college.  Only thing I learned in the class was that more schooling wasn't going to help, the only thing that would make me better was practice, which I haven't done of course :-)

That welder looks just like mine, except mine is beige and says 'Hobart'.  And cost about 33% less.....

All respect, when it gets below 60 I'm looking for a coat!  Going to be 84 here today, unusually warm even for us.  We also had a freeze in December, which is unusually cold.  Don't like the weather?  Wait a few minutes....

The only reason I have this beast is to haul the 40' 5th wheel around.  This is the first long bed I've had, and I'll never have another short bed.  It is nice to be able to shut the tailgate when leaving home depot.  The dually is nice when the 5th wheel is back there, it's a lot more stable in wind, but it is a pain to park in a normal spot.
It does surprisingly well on the highway without the trailer - about 17mpg, pretty much what my old gas 1500 short bed did.

Computer geek yes, invision, no.  As I recall when I looked at it a while back, the database is mysql, pretty standard and should be something even you average overseas computer dweeb should be able to move without a lot of angst.
I'm pretty covered up at the moment, end of the year is always busy when clients figure out they still have money in their budget and lose it 12/31....

No worries, I certainly appreciate all your work to keep this site up and going.  I suspect that the world will continue to spin even if the great wisdom I posted Thursday is lost.

Mine has the snowmobile primer, and (when it was flying) I replaced the primer at every condition inspection.  They didn't seem to last much longer than that, and anything that ends up with fuel loose in the cockpit is a bad thing.

I doubt there is a lot of difference between windmilling and stopped on a fixed pitch prop.  The difference comes in when a constant speed is windmilling versus when it is feathered, that makes a big difference!

I'll echo Lennies comment - have you gone to Bass Pro Shop and priced a new outboard these days?  I did a couple of years ago, and the price was more than an equivalent 4 stroke airplane engine.  As for used, I used to work on boat engines, and after the abuse I've seen heaped on those, I'd never trust a used one on my airplane!

Have you fixed the pedals yet?  The stock pedal geometry is awful.  With the stock pedals, I couldn't hold my model C Avid at 3000 RPM.  Fixed the geometry, and it holds at 5500 just fine.  Don't bother with the Matco 'intensifier' kit, I tried it first, and maybe I could hold at 3500 RPM.  I had to change to the shortest master cylinder they had, G or H, to make the geometry work.

At least it's a real turkey.  Here in Florida the biggest flight hazard, particularly in the pattern are turkey vultures.  As big as a turkey, fly in flocks, seem to love airports, but completely inedible!  I know two people that have had a collision with them, one just needed one side of his windshield, the other got an insurance paid for engine tear down/inspect AND a new windshield after he hit two.  One hit the prop, the other went through the windshield.  The interior probably still has some turkey buzzard blood stains.
I am fully in favor of requiring any bird bigger than a sparrow to be ADSB-out equipped!

I've had ADS-B in my Cherokee for 6 years now (time flies).  If you ever fly with it, you will be amazed how many airplanes are out there you never saw.  It saved me from a close encounter at least once so far when a high wing took off from a private strip underneath my flight path, it was a setup for a classic high wing/low wing midair.  Of course, Florida has more airplanes per cubic foot of airspace than any other part of the country!
It is not something you are supposed to stare at and never look outside the window.  It is just another part of the scan.  There a plenty of aircraft that will never have ADS-B (especially in Florida!), and you have to watch for those as well.
One thing it has taught me is that even knowing exactly where the other small airplane is, I can't see it until it is within 2nm of me, and I have 20/15 distance vision (over 50, so reading glasses are now a part of my life though).  At Avid/Kitfox speeds, that is probably plenty, but at 150mph, if the other plane is also going 150mph that's only about 30 seconds from seeing it until collision.  It wouldn't take much distraction to add up to 30 seconds.  Especially when doing the beach inspection runs!

Draco lost the battle with a crosswind on takeoff at Reno today.  Below is an Instagram link to the video. You'll probably need an Instagram account to view it, but I couldn't find it anywhere else:

I believe mine are CA-1550, same as on my Cherokee.  They take a square o-ring.  My mechanic replaces the o-rings, but I don't trust them, since they aren't the same.  I give him my 'cores' after I replace them.  They last several years, and hey, aviation is expensive.  I don't cut corners on anything that involves fuel or sparks.

You never know what is in mogas - they can put anything in it as long as it meets the relatively weak specifications for automobile useage.  It may be fine, and it may contain some nasty solvents they needed to get rid of when mixing up the next batch.

More horsepower needs either a bigger prop, or a prop with more 'bite' to convert the horsepower to thrust.  The same prop, spinning at the same RPM is going to produce the same amount of thrust regardless how much horsepower is spinning it.
