Bless you. You took a load off my shoulders. I couldnt find any play in the wrist pin or crank. I dont know what causes that other than may be backlash in the rotary valve gears.

    Thanks

    clicking noise rotax 582
My rotax 582 grey head has about 4 hours of total run time on it. I am not familiar with this engine at all as this is the first one I have had. I am curious if a clicking noise when rotating the engine by hand is normal. When I take the spark plugs out the sound goes away. When it is under compression with the plugs in it comes back. Sounds like it is coming from the cylinder area. Makes me worry that something may be wrong. However, all of the engine temps are running normal and never had evidence of a seizure. Hopefully it is just something inherent to all rotax 582 grey heads.

    Thanks

    bing 54 carb vent lines
Just started my 582 on avid flyer today. Fuel pouring out of vent lines (overflow) on bing 54 carbs. Needle is seating correctly and floats work freely. No debris. Airscrew Performance told me that the carbs need to be set level because the Avid flys with the tail a little low anyways. If the tail is sitting on the ground and the carbs are set in line with engine rather than level with ground, then fuel will overflow according to Airscrew Performance. What are your thoughts on this fix. With the tail sitting on the ground i set the carbs level with ground. Sure enough that fixed it. What concerns me is when in flight what happens if I do a steep turn, descent, etc. and the carbs are no longer level. Dont want an in flight fire. Also, is it okay to have longer vent line on the carbs that extend below the muffler.

    Thanks

What type of oil do you suggest for the C drive on a rotax 582.

So I filled my rotary valve cavity today with oil. My engine is inverted and the oil resivour tank is above the engine. I removed the bleed screw and filled the tank to the line and let it drain into the rotary valve cavity. It took about 3 1/4 to 4 fillings of my little oil resivour tank to fill it until it poured out of the bleed hole. Guaranteed the rotary valve shaft with the brass gear is total submerged. One thing I am not sure about is the their may be a small amount of airspace from the top of the bleed hole to the top of the crank housing (engine upside down).

    What are your thoughts.

    Motor Mount Question
I took my engine out and did not pay attention to the motor mount. I have the rotax 582. The four studs that come out of the bottom of the engine slide through the two aluminum motor mounts that are mounted to the rubber mounts. My question is if there is supposed to be a spacer between the engine itself at the stud and the mount. In other words, I have two washers and one lock washer on each stud. Right now they are right under the nut. It doesnt look right so I am wondering if one of the washers is supposed to be between the engine and the mount.

    Thanks

Is there any special oil that I should run in the Rotary shaft housing or is it the same that I run through the injection system.

    THanks

    Injection Oil Question
Aside from all the rumors what is the best oil to use in a rotax 582 greyhead from 1992 regardless of the expense.

What is your recommendation to make sure its full. Airscrew told me the same thing. I hope that does not happen. This engine is brand new. It was in mint condition when I pulled it apart. Replaced all the seals including the water seals. Paid careful attention to the manual.

    Thanks

I am working on my certifications. Would love to have you fly off some of the hours when I get the inspection. If you come up on the 4th and the weather is permitting I would be happy to have you fly it.

    Thanks

On the rotax 582 grey head the older ones had the ignition coils that were not adjustable except the gap therefore timing is set. I spoke with the mechanic at airscrew performance and he said on the rotary there is a scribe mark. Put mag piston at top dead center and then put on rotary plate lined up on the scribe line. If it does not line up that means the plate must be turned over. Sure enough when I did that it lined up perfectly. So I am all set.

Thanks for your help. I will get that video and book back to you soon. I hope to be taxing on a lake very soon with some ground hops to check it out.

I have the 1992 rotax greyhead. The ignition coils have the round mounting holes so the only thing I can adjust there is the gap. What is the scribe line on the case under the rotary plate. I thought at top dead center the plate was to be installed on that scribe line. Guess Ill keep reading tonight. Of course in that position the intake hole is open on the pto side and the intake hole is covered on the magneto side.

    Thanks

    Timing Rotax 582
Question for 582 mechanics. When I reassembled my rotax 582 I put the magneto side piston at top dead center and placed the rotary plate on the scibe line on the case. My magneto is set like it was when I took it out. Does this sound right?

    Thanks

I cant find the loctite you are talking about for the sleeve in Wasilla. Will permatex work for that? If so what color.

I did break down my rotary valve shaft to replace all the seals and oring.

    Thanks

    Permatex vs Loctite
Is it okay to use permatex in place of loctite when reassembling a rotax 582?

    Thanks for info

  18. lv2plyguitar added a post in a topic Gas caps

CAC plastics in wasilla sells an epoxy that holds up under fuel. I had a CAN AM 800 that developed a leak in the fuel pump housing. The plate was made of plastic. The name of the epoxy is Westsystems G-flex. My fuel pump repair has lasted with the repair being submursed in fuel. No doubt it would hold up to fuel splashing against it on a fuel cap.

I would like to see a picture of the type of fuel cap you are talking about. Does Airdale sell the caps with the vent tube?

    Thanks

Great. Thank you very much. Good news is I got the motor apart. Still in new condition with no corrision after sitting 15 years. Got new seals on the way and look forward to getting it started.

    Rotax 582 Crank Case Seal
Does any know if rotax has recommended using any other type of case seal since the original recommendation of Loctite 574 when sealing the two crank case halves together.

What types have any of you used without any failer of the seal.

    Thanks for your input.

  21. lv2plyguitar added a post in a topic AVID Flyer Belly Cargo Pod

You know at this point I do not have a clue. I would call Airdale as Brett may have the original mold. If he does not have the mold then I can go to CAC Plastics and lay out a proposal for him to make a mold with a minium number of orders. I think the original cost of the pod was 350 to 500.

So, I think our first stop may be Airdale and then pursue having a form made in Alaska.

    AVID Flyer Cargo POD Pictures
Here are the pictures I promised. This pod would hold alot of camping gear. Could even fit my guitar. Maybe even my wife. If you guys in Alaska want one for the summer we should get with CAC plastics and get a form made or make one ourselves. I have no experience with fiberglass or gelcoat.

    Enjoy
