    Haha yep I'm finding that out slowly as the day progresses. I have found a couple around the US that may be willing to come to SoCal to instruct,  I also talked again with my insurance agent and it looks like if I submit a pilot report of the CFI I want to use and he has a good amount of tailwheel time, then he might be able to instruct me after a 3-5 hour checkout, so that's MUCH better!
     
    I'll post my findings as they get figured out.

    Thanks everyone, I appreciate the feedback.
     
    I've sent an email  to John Miller and am also pricing out what will be cheaper: buying 115 gallons of avgas, oil, and overhaul reserves while my CFI flies off the time, or hitting up Kenneth (seriously) about coming out to sunny SoCal for a week to knock this ticket out.  
     
    By the way Kenneth, what is your hourly rate for instruction? We can discuss further over PM if you'd prefer. Thanks again everybody.

    Man that's a real bummer. All my money is tied up in the plane, I saved just enough to cover my fuel, instructor and test fees. If I have to rent or pay someone to fly my plane I'll be grounded for at least 6-12 months while I save up.

    If anyone within a days drive of Los Angeles is a CFI with 25 hrs time in Avid/KF let me know!

    Looking for Avid/KF instructor in SoCal
    Hi Everyone,
     
    Well, I just put a down payment on a MK IV, and will be completing my training in it -- at least that is my hope. I got a couple insurance quotes from companies that WILL cover me as 1.5 hr pilot, however there are come caveats: I need 20 hours dual instead of the FAA minumum 15 for the SP ticket (fine, I may need that much anyway), but my instructor needs 250 TT in taildraggers, and 25 hrs TT in exact make and model in order to be covered.
     
    Now I heard this can be negotiated to a degree, but if they won't budge on these times, I can't just find a 3000 hr tailwheel instructor out here and go flying. I'll need to find a CFI with 250 tt in taildraggers and 25 hrs of time logged in an Avid/Kitfox. (I'm sure Kitfox time could be negotiated to count since they're so similar to Avids)
     
    Anyone know of a CFI in Southern California that meets these requirements? Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

    Any MK IV owners in Southern California?
    Hi, everyone, I'm shopping for an Avid MK IV and need to know if there's any MK IV owners nearby that might be willing to meet with me so I can sit in the aircraft and make sure I fit....I don't even need to fly, just try the aircraft on for size. I'm 6'2" 165 lbs and I hear some people my height fit, while others do not.
     
    Anyway, if you're within 3-4 hours of Los Angeles and you have an MK IV I'd love to chat with you about meeting up. Thanks!

    Ok, sounds good. I have a line on a 16 foot trailer for $35 a day, would 16 feet be long enough? will all three wheels fit on the flat bed or do I need to go longer?

    Shipping an Avid on a Flatbed Trailer
    Hi everyone,
     
    I'm looking at an Avid that has a tow bar, which will work to get my plane 1/2 mile to the airport, but i'll need to rent or borrow a flatbed trailer to get it to my ranch. It's about 440 miles away. I've read about trailering here on the forum and know that I need to be mindful of stress on the tailwheel -- and the frame -- and since I'm not using a purpose built trailer, just a flatbed, what do I need to watch out for, and how do I do it safely? Thanks.

    Thanks everyone, I have contacted the instructor I'm going to do the rest of my training with, and he doesn't require dual brakes, so I probably won't do it right away, but I think I will have them installed shortly after I get my certificate. My wife wants to fly with me, as well as learn to fly, so I think dual brakes makes sense in my situation because she wants to be able to land the aircraft safely should something happen in flight, etc. I just got a message this morning from Mikesk about getting his pedal mods for both sides and basically what to get from Matco to finish out the project, so I'm good to go! I appreciate all the (quick) feedback from the users in this forum.
     
    BTW I'm looking at an Avid MK IV HH but it has no trailer, just a tow bar, so to get it here I'll need a flatbed trailer for transport...can anyone tell me what the wheel base and wheel track is on a stock MK IV? just need to know the minimum length flatbed I'd need to get to make the move...thanks!

    Thanks everyone, here's where I'm at: I actually got the idea of training in my own experimental from a sport pilot CFI who is also a LSRM, SP DPE, and Independent certified rotax repairman. And he instructs in tail wheel LSA's as well. From what I've been told it is allowed as long as it's my plane -- but I'm the only person who is allowed to do this as the sole owner.

    Av8r3400, I haven't specifically discussed whether or not he requires brakes on his side yet, he may not, but I just wanted to see how pricey/difficult it would be to add the brake pedals, master cylinders, lines, etc. also, sorry for the newbie question (and for being miscategorized) but what is the mc-4/mc-5? Different types of master cylinders? Thanks again
