Insurance

I am nearly finished with my Kitfox lll build and need to start looking for insurance. Being a low time taildragger pilot I know it is not going to be easy. I do want to get some dual time in a Kitfox to knock off the rust, anyone in central New York with a Kitfox interested? The anticipation builds for the maiden flight the closer I am to being finished, sure others know what I mean. Any suggestions on a company for insurance?

Contact EAA's insurance service. They treated me very well when I started out. I'm with Falcon through them.

I have also heard the some people have good luck with AOPA's insurance brokerage too.

No suggestion on insurance, but one suggestion on IP: Nice engine turning on IP - LOOKS GOOD, BUT, You may hate it later on when the sun glares on it. Better to paint it or cover with leather or wood, IMHO. Good looking paint job on plane. What system did you use?

Thanks for the replies,I think I will try EAA and AOPA for insurance pricing. Thanks Ed for the suggestion on the IP, thought of that as I was putting on the design. I cleared the IP with a satin clear so will have to see when we get flying. Your probably write about the glare though.

I just got a quote from my insurance company for 850.00 per year for my Mark IV i just bought. I also have another aircraft insured with them so I dont know if it makes a difference in the price or not. But you can call my agent, his number is:

Jeff McClaran

877-353-1047 office

816-309-4104 cell

He will answer anytime his cell phone and is very helpful. They have monthly rates or yearly which ever you prefer. A good bunch of people. The company is Aviation Solutions, Lee's Summint, MO

I wish I could get your rates up here! My quote was triple that for liability only. They laughed at me when I asked for a quote for 15,000 hull.. That was with 400 hrs in type.

I failed to notice in your photo if you had an overhanging lip over the IP. Bengalis (sp?) in his books recommended an overhanging glareshield over the instruments, and as a safety factor, to edge it with a split garden hose. I chose to use split PVC conduit instead.

Congratulations on your build, and GOOD FLYING.

Nice work, I made an instrument panel for my truck back in 2007 just like yours and covered it with the clear as well and it still looks great so you should be good. the glare shield on the top would be a good addition though.

Probably because of all the bragging about landing on a beluga or taking off of a sandbar while chasing moose in high brush, and other good tales that you "bushpilots" tell?

P.S. I worked for Dominion Propeller in Anchorage - you wouldnt believe how many Supercub props I saw with bullet holes going thru the BACK of the prop!!!!

My insurance from Marsh Canada,is $400 a year Canadian

No hull coverage,just liability

3 million for passengers and third party liability

(in case I have to do forced approach onto top of car on highway,or on top of someones house)

Plane/floats/ski's/and trailer are only worth 10 to 15 grand

so I feel it's replaceable easy enough without having to have hull coverage

Insurance is one of the biggest rip-off's there is IMHO

House/fire/auto/plane/medical....

largest expense today for some is all the insurance premiums they have to pay

I only insure, what I feel I can not afford to replace on my own

Nice work!! I see your into RC too! I have a few of the same ones I see hanging in your shop! It is a disease! One turned into 5 into 50 into around 130 or so. Been flying them since dad got me started in Kindergarten. If its aviation realted, I am fully into it, but have gone mainly into electric and gas. It has been 2 or 3 years since I fired up a slimer

It may have something to do with the fact that the local insurance agent was my instructor years back who owned the flying club, and was the DPE on my check rides... May also have something to do with the fact that I may have hit something in the grass and folded the gear on his PA12 I was renting in 1995  No biggie I thought, just swapped his gear out for an extra set I had in the shop at the time :lmao: He didnt really see the humor in it at the time, but soon came around and rented the plane to me for a few years after that.

Moral of story: Never let an insurance agent fly with you, and NEVER wreck his airplane!

Nothing to do with Wild, crazy Bush pilots who do the ridiculous and impossible?

BTW: My flying buddy called me yesterday and said he wrecked his 46 Luscomb that he had been flying for 44 years.

Landing on grass strip - left wing hit a hole in the air when flaring, recovered, and plane just dropped. Jammed left landing gear up into door post - probably will be totaled - but no one hurt, and FAA declared it "accident", AND NOT PILOT ERROR. He had never wrecked a plane in nearly 60 years of flying most everything.

He was not an insurance agent at the time... But he has a memory like an elephant I spose

Pretty AMAZING that they actually wrote a report that did not state it was "Pilot error, failure to maintain adequate airspeed for the invisible pockets of air that can't be seen but the pilot should still have avoided"

Another oddity - 25K damage, but not totaled yet - Will see when they tear into it - no prop strike either - Going by truck to Dallas to a Luscomb specialist to be rebuilt. Has a good 0-200 in it - flies great, but they are squirrely on the ground. His took first place after only 4 days of judging at Oshkosh many years ago, after he had restored it. Took his newly refinished / restored J3 (C-90) out to his hanger yesterday, so he can still fly.
