Best Gearbox Ratio for 582 and GSC? Kitfox III

17 posts in this topic

I soon need to order a new C box for my 582.  I willbe running the OEM GSC prop (came with a Kitfox III) for the near term, then hope to head towards an IVO or similar down the road.

My engine was originally equipped with a 3.0 ratio.  Is this the best ratio for a GSC, or would it make sense to move to a 2.6X ratio?

Anyone run a GSC with a 2.6x ratio box on a 582?

I dont remember if I was on ebay or Barnstormers a few days ago, but I saw a C gearbox with 3 to 1 gears used for a few hundred bucks. Not sure If your in the market for used parts or new ones.

I ran the GSC 2 blade mechanical IFA on my 582 with both 3:1 and 2.62:1 gearsets (or what ever the ratio of the 2.x is). While it worked with both, I preferred the 3:1. The prop was pretty massive and it seemed to rev slower and just didn't kile to jump off th ground as well with the 2.62. The 2.62 did pretty well in cruise though. Still I preferred the 3:1 overall with the GSC.

Thanks T.J. I made initial contact.

Thanks ChrisB.  For reference my prop is a 3 blade in case that makes any difference.

I have an A or B box that was used with a 532 upright and 3-blade 68" GSC -

Donno how to tell what ratio it is.

If you can use it, I would take $200 plus shipping.

Or, I may put it on ebay soon.

the gear set should be stamped on the case ED. Or you could just spin it by hand and count.

Do you have to buy a complete redrive, or just the gears? I thought you said your gears were ruined? Maybe that was someone else?

Actually, I need the gears, prop-shaft, bearings and seals.  All excessive corrosion damage.  The total is more than a new box.  The outside of the box (casing) looks shiny new actually.

Thanks for the other box offers but I would like to stay with a C box.

That's the first time I have heard about a 3.47:1 ratio.
