Yes I am making my own threaded inserts, I bought a 12" long piece of 3/4" solid 4130 rod, that should give me a 3" long piece to slide down into the strut and Rosette weld in. Then I will do a final tap. I chose to use 7/8" .049 tube for my struts because the 3/4" solid rod is a really nice fit in that tube without machining,  I agree with the 3/8" rod end is probably stronger than needed, I was gonna use the 5/16 rod end but it was not Magnafluxed and the 3/8" one was.

Yes.  My "A" manual calls out the 4P    1/4 28 internal thread, 3/16 inch clevis  pin hole.The "P" suffix means that it is cadmium plated.
