Avid Catalina

Well yesterday I went up to Anchorage and picked up an Avid Catalina for akflyerbob.  Man what a cute little bird this is!  The build manual also confirmed what I was thinking about doing with wing extensions!  They just spliced into an existing avid wing and added 3 more bays!  Me thinks I know what my next project will be.  Building longer wings for my Model "C"!  will get some pics of Bobs new toy up after I get it unloaded this afternoon.

Like the new attachments better than the old. I've never seen a Catalina up close and personal... pretty cool looking bird. Looks like you have some work to do on that one.

I am still getting used to the look of the board.. mine looks different than the other members with more bells and whistles on each page, but it make moderating and moving topics around alot easier for me!

The bird will get a full tear down and rebuild. Bob has already stripped the fuse and tail feathers and will start work on the wings next. All rib hangers will have to be replaced as well as alot of other work.. I guess I know what I will be helping to do this winter! These birds are too damn cool to let them sit and rot so I am VERY glad that Bob decided to rescue this one from a sad fate!

Leni's going to have to look into the picture posting issue. There must be a check-box or something somewhere that allows members to post pictures that isn't checked...

OK, after a few drinks, some nut scratching and a few pissy emails, I think i figured out the pic posting issue... you guys try and post up some pics and see if it works for ya!

On another note, the supprot guys ran a script that seems to have fixed all the older attachments that were no showing as thumbnails after the conversion... Things are looking up here!

Appears to be in pretty decent shape underneath. What engine is that? What's your time frame for the rebuild? Please start a thread for when you start putting it back together. I've always loved the Catalina. If I ever find one around here I'll probably buy it..we have a ton of water around here.

It seems to be in good condition with a few mistakes made

during the original build, which I intend to fix.

The motor is a 582 mod 90 w/c box.

If every thing goes well it will fly this spring when the

ice is gone.

Leni is here fixing my computer stuff and he says it can

fly sooner...it has wheels.

There were a couple on Barnstormers last week.

O and by the way I just got home from picking the floats

from Jack and having Alcohol injected into my neck so I

wouldn't have to drink it.

No really it was Cotrozone so I could feel my hands.

Hey Bob

I found the pictures for your sister, how come you don't tell Lenny that you wear depends cause you don't like your sticker getting cold when you have to go outside!

Could an Avid Amphibian (Catalina) be operated off it's belly in deep snow?

I saw a video of Kenmore planes on straight floats (not just your Full Lotus inflate-o-floats, Leni) being operated off snow, once.

Would this stress the hull too much? Could a sacrificial wear surface be added to the bottom?

Just thinking outside the box, a little... :hammerhead:
