How are these grips removed?

I can't figure out how to remove these grips. They seem to be installed with an iron grip.

I'd try a hot air gun first.  Lots of adhesives used on our birds will soften with heat.  The aluminum stick should transfer heat pretty quickly.

If the heat gun don't work, there should be a hole somewhere for the wire to come out - you might get a shot of compressed air into that hole - that's how we used to get the rubber grips off of our bicycles.

Take the knurled nut off the switch and see if it makes a difference.

The stick looks like chromed steel tubing to me.  If so, I hope it was baked to prevent hydrogen embrittlement.

My KF 1 & 2 had plain steel tubing sticks - The KF3 I just got had chrome sticks, torque tubes, and all rudder pedal parts.  I guess that was factory?  Maybe later ones came with chrome too?  Donno what Avid had.

I have another avid that uses chrome tubing in most of the flight deck.

i removed mine with a mapp torch, but it may discolor your chrome.  I built myself new sticks that center them on the body so i didnt care about the old ones

Are you going to replace or reuse the grips? If you're replacing them, I'd use a wood chisel and hammer to nip away at them till they came loose.

Yes, that's it in the pic.

Looks like hammer and chisel or new tubes and leave the wood grips intact on the old toobs.  Heat didn't seem to work.

Be a shame to ruin them. They look pretty nice. Looks aren't everything though!

I think they're great looking too and would be quite nice with some sanding and perhaps spar urethane.  However, with smaller grips I could get 1/2-3/4" extra control travel either side - which would come in handy when doing forward slips on final. :)

It wouldn't take much of a bend away from the door just below the grip to give you an inch more that way, and would not affect the travel toward center.  You cant go any farther than the mechanical stops anyway.
