Can we put a 170 in with you guys or will they frown on that?

What are you flying?  There’s many areas, including the ultralight field, that allow underwing camping.

Unfortunately, there is no dedicated Avid/Kitfox parking/camping area, you will be escorted to general aircraft camping upon arrival on the main runways. Some under wing camping areas like North and South 40 are a looong way from the main action, and may not be serviced by tram or bus as regularly as other areas on the grounds particularly at night. If you can plan for arrival at the UL strip, you can park/camp in front of the UL Barn. It's a small area, not exactly like the larger dedicated camping areas, but it is a more convenient location closer to services IMHO. Several from the forum park/camp here. The displaced thresholds due to trees might seem a bit sporty for first timers but there is more than enough usable length for a Kitfox even if you come in hot and find yourself floating a bit. Larry can help coordinate your arrival and tie down, he volunteers at the UL Barn. Will be easy if you come early, much more difficult after the place fills up. Check the 2018 Notam when it becomes available, more here >>> https://www.eaa.org/en/airventure/eaa-fly-in-flying-to-oshkosh/ultralight-arrivals

According to the EAA in the ultralight area

  • “Should not be a type certificated Vintage aircraft such as a Cub, Champ, etc.”

so us taking a vintage 1948 170 doesn’t sound feasible   Is there any camping somewhat near there?  We are planning on getting there early

@Machinist -

Procedures for arrival are in the official OSH Airventure NOTAM (2018 not out yet, 2017 is still available via Google search). You will be directed by the EAA Flagmen to the General Aviation Parking or Camping area in use at the time of your arrival. There really is no way to save a spot if you fly in and camp. They do, however, have certain areas for specific type aircraft that also allow camping ie., vintage, warbird, antique, homebuilt, amphib, etc. Once those are full, you will go into General Camping. Parking and camping areas for aircraft may reach saturation at times and force you to divert to Appleton or Fond du Lac airports. Basically, it's all first come, first served and early bird definitely gets the worm at OSH. Parking area status is available via telephone recording (920-230-7820) and at www eaa.org/aircraftparking. The AirVenture Arrival ATIS (125.9) also has parking availability information, when applicable. Pilots landing at OSH must use a printed sign to designate their intended parking or camping area. The sign should have large dark letters readable from at least fifty feet. It can be handmade or printed from www.eaa.org/signs (paper only, no tablet computer signs). Display it in the left side of your windshield after landing. The following codes are used:

signs.thumb.jpg.0e11e77d3a7136677fe7d046

(Note to Tjay and others considering flying UL, EAB, ESLA, SLSA into OSH via the VFR Fisk Arrival: there is no sign ID for UL Camping if arriving on the main runways, maybe have another sign with UL CAMPING AREA spelled out and point towards the UL Field if they shrug their shoulders. Having done the Ripon Conga Line several times, I would want not to do it in a Avid/Kitfox during regular arrival times as you will likely need to approach and land MUCH faster than normal due to certified aircraft flying up yer azz, over top of you for the next dot etc. Controllers telling you to get off the runway before your tires even squeek! Can be rather intimidating, just saying'.).

Very helpful thanks. Obviously I will not have my phase 1 flown off this year in time (full time job) but I sure would love to fly in there and meet you guys and see your planes one of these years.

There is "vintage" camping/parking right next to the Ultralight area, just to the east and another field just north of UL if you look at the map.  These areas allow underwing.

Avid/Kitfox LSA and LSA-like EAB should land via the UL arrival procedures to the grass UL strip to camp in that area by the UL Red Barn.

Immediately north of that area is Vintage camping for which a 170 is probably qualified--check your year, but the parking crew often isn't all that discriminating.

I used to fly in with my Vintage Clipper and, along with a VAC sign to request Vintage area camping, I would also have a sign that said "Row 102"  (or whatever row friends had told me they were parked) and the parking crew would always send me to that row.   I don't recall what row number is immediately north of the UL/LSA area so you'd have to figure that out.  Here are pix of a Cessna just one row north of where I camped in the UL/LSA area, and another that shows a perspective of the Red Barn and UL tents with Vintage just north of it, beyond the balloon.  So you could park your 170 right next to the area where any Avid/Kitfoxes would be.  LSA that don't fly into the UL strip could be parked scattered in HBC.

I'm not sure I've ever heard of anyone who wanted to camp with their plane be turned down and required to go to an alternate, but if the field is closed for an accident you have to go to an alternate.  I have heard of transient parking (day visitors, GAP, VAP, HBP) filling up but not camping areas.

Gunderson Thanks

That is great information.  Is the light sport area where most of our group is camping?

i am not having any luck finding a good map on the EAA site or elsewhere.

There are usually a handful of Avid/Kitfoxes camped by the UL Red Barn.  There may be some scattered around in the Homebuilt camping areas but I'm not aware of any place other than UL camping by the red barn where you would find a cluster of them.

Thanks for the map. That is just what I was looking for. Is the ultralight runway where the stol exhibition will be?

Larry where are you planning on setting up camp?

thanks again

Never been to Oshkosh but have cleared work schedule and have permission from my significant other to go this year. At this time planing to fly the fat Avid. So far there are two of us planning to fly our Avids from tri-cities, wa.

Sounds like the ul area is the place to land and camp?

Chris, I would recommend landing at the grass UL strip and camping there by the Red Barn.  You could also do the Ripon approach, land on one of the long runways, and camp in the Homebuilt camping area.  But one advantage of the UL area is they don't charge you a camping fee (at least they haven't for me the last 6 years) since they aren't getting enough UL/ former fat ULs coming in these days.  All other aircraft camping areas require a minimum 3 night camping charge currently $27/night I think (per aircraft).

That sounds like a great flight. If you and your group want a place to overnight on the way in or out of Oshkosh, I'm in the Minneapolis/St.Paul area 250 miles NW and can arrange a few beds at my place and/or other EAA chapter member's places, airport is 21D.  I'm flying my Cozy this year so won't be in the UL area but will certainly be down there often.

Thanks Marlon! We always flew into the ultralight strip and camping area at Arlington. It was always nicer and more personable. I’m happy to hear Oshkosh doesn’t seem to frown on ULs sharing space with light sport.

STOL Demos will be Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings at the ultralight field.

We will be camping across the street from the ultralight barn.  God willing, the Mangy will be parked at the Ultralight Field.

Our party is scheduled for Thursday afternoon at our campsite, details to follow.

I would like to figure out where we can camp once we get there. I have another Idaho pilot who is going and he is taking the same commercial flight I am. I know Joey and I want to camp in the same location. If you guys talk to anyone in charge of all that or find out what the program will be this year please let me know. Its going to be a great time and I look forward to meeting and hanging out this the Avidfox crew this year.

If I make it this year, I'll be in regular camping in Camp Schofield.  I'll be driving the 5th wheel up again, I'm a glamper, not a camper!

FYI for early AirVenture arrivals, I was checking the EAA site for some info today and notice there are new grounds rules in place for 2018. The restrictions will be in place from Thursday July 19 thru Sunday July 22. See more HERE.

Yep.  The fun police have cracked down.

We may have dodged too much notice down on the farm for now though...

Member discount tickets are on sale until June 15th. I have not purchased event tickets yet. What do I need to buy?

Weekly passes into the event are $120. The only camping tickets I see are Camp Scholler drive in camping spots @ $27 a day for basic camping
