I have a Lycoming IO-320 170hp in my Magnum. I have high compression heads and dual Lightspeed electronic ignition.

4 blade warp drive 74" prop.

I love it.

Any other lycomings out there?

Hey Mike, welcome aboard.

You must have the really low compression heads. 17 hp must push your TBO out to about 2,000,000 hrs :dunno::lol:

Do you have any idea how much your pulling with that prop? I had a 032 on my Pacer with an 82X41 on it. That is what most of the cub guys run on them up here for pure pulling power on takeoff. well, anywhere from a 41 to a 44 depending on what is available at the time of order :lol:

I know this post is pretty old. I was looking for someone who has installed an electronic ignition / fuel injection system on his Lycoming. However - I do have a O 320 D1A in my Avid Magnum. That means high compression and 160 HP. Captmikem in case you're still in this forum, let me know...

     Hi guys  I have a deposit on a magnum kit and will be looking to get an engine, 0-320 150hp is sapose to be good But 

would the 160 hp weight be more

The simple answer is no. But there are many variations of each engine which will affect the weight.

My Magnum has a 150 Lycoming. The plane weighs just over 1000 LB and performance is fantastic.

160 would be more HP and since I never flew behind 160 HP i can't really tell anyone just how much better it would be. However the 150 performed beyond my hopes or expectations.

I would not want a 160 on my plane because it will not run on ethanol free regular autogas like the 150 will. For me that alone is a good enough reason to forego the additional 10 HP.

That is just my opinion and certainly not anyone else's point of view! :-)

     Morning all 

I found a lycoming O-320 e2d with 2600 hours since last overhaul ,just removed  from Cessna 172, it was replaced do to (505 ad) witch is Corrosion inside the front crankshaft journal. My plan is to clean and inspect and then coat inside of journal run a wood or composite prop.if there is bad pitting I’m looking for information on a O-340 crank ,

We have a Lyc O-320 on our Magnum putting out 160 hp. Great performer!

My pacer has 160 HP 0320 on it and its been run on pump gas for YEARS.  You really don't have to worry about not being able to run pump gas till you hit 180 HP.

It isn't the horsepower, it's the compression ratio.  160HP O-320 is iffy on pump gas unless it is really good pump gas (high octane) because it has a 8.5:1 ratio.  My Cherokee 235 with a O-540 will run on 80/87 or low octane pump gas.  I have the Petersen STC for it, which consists of a metal placard mounted on the engine, and stickers placed at each fueling point.  No modifications to the engine or fuel system were required, and it is 235 horsepower, but only 7.2:1 ratio.  Less squeeze means more detonation margin.
