Start up without prop

I was always told to never start an engine without a prop which I can understand but if you start a 582 with a C gearbox and keep the idle down below 2500 wouldnt that be the same as having a clutch in your gearbox? It would help me out so I could run my engine in the shop and just check some things out.I would like to get a clutch setup if anybody has one for sale. Thanks Randy

It doesn't hurt a thing to start the motor without a prop.

Its not the best thing on backlash for the gears in the box

just don't rev high or rapid rpm changes.

Thousands of 2 stroke are started everyday only hooked to a belt.

The proverb you referd to applys to a 4 stroke and only because

the prop is the flywheel for the engine giving momentom for the

next compression.

Thats kinda what I was thinking, I just want to run it and check for leaks ,etc.I mentioned that I was going to start my engine without a prop to one of our local pilots and he just about ripped my head off.I,ll keep the revs low and no abrupt throttle changes. Thanks Bob

To echo what Bob said, you can start it without the prop, it is just VERY easy to over rev it. Keep it at an idle or somewhere under 3000 and you should be fine.

Your thinking on the clutch set up is correct. Essentially I start mine every time without the prop "attached" to the engine, however, I am also not driving any of the gears until I hit 2500 RPM. Just be careful, mind your RPM and you will be fine.

A Rotax 912 will start and run just fine without a prop installed.

This is one of the ways to get a plane with a weak sprag clutch started and warmed up for an easy start once the prop is reinstalled.
